Damn! 4 Giants' 40 times/draft profiles (OBJ/Shep/Perk/EE)

Beezer : 4/28/2017 10:57 am
Remember not that long ago when we lamented about not having "that impact player?" Hell, for some of us, that was the case for too long, over long stretches.

Well folks, here we go! Just thinking about it has me excited for opening day!

Four young skill guys who are fast as hell, creating all sorts of potential match-up nightmares for DCs across the league.

Just for starters, here are the listed 40 times for these four:

* 4.43 OBJ

* 4.48 Shep

* 4.54 Perk

* 4.42 EE

I broke out some of OBJ's draft profile since I think it's interesting to see what they got right, and what they missed (yeah ... he's a third option, all right lol).

Plus, all their NFL draft profiles.

OBJ - ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS
Quick hands and feet to slip the jam. Fluid and fast. Good balance. Sinks his hips and changes gears to create separation. Quick hands to pluck off his frame. Terrific leaping ability -- climbs the ladder to snatch throws. Creates after the catch -- shows burst and shiftiness as a runner. Has playmaking ability. Confident and competitive. Has kickoff- and punt-return experience. Productive three-year starter.

WEAKNESSES Adequate height. Lacks elite top-end speed to separate vertically. Could stand to polish the finer points of his route running. Inconsistent making contested grabs -- can be out-muscled in a crowd. Has some concentration drops. Can improve as a blocker. Was not an impactful punt returner. Was held in check by Florida and Alabama.

DRAFT PROJECTION Rounds 1-2

BOTTOM LINE Talented, competitive, productive, inconsistent college split end who projects as a flanker or slot receiver in the pros, where a creative offensive coordinator can take advantage of his run-after-catch skills. Could be a productive No. 3 option with added value as a kick returner.

Odell's Draft Profile

Sterling's Draft Profile

Perk's Draft Profile

Engram's Draft Profile

Lacks elite top-end speed to separate vertically

Or...probably the best WR in football at taking a slant to the house.
Ha!

The reason I broke it out ... just for the fun of seeing how guys CAN be overrated, but even though we've liked OBJ longer than most, "experts" didn't see his impact coming. Not at this level.
And holy shit!

Engram has the best 40 time of those 4???

At 234 pounds???

Are you frigging kidding me???

That would be Nolan Narwocki, of PFW fame.

Right. And yet people watch him show truly elite speed all over the field and somehow believe he runs a 4.43 because that's what they said at the combine. 4.33 I'd believe. 4.43 he runs going backwards.

40 times are meaningless in real football.. OBJ runs way faster in real football games than almost anyone else.. But it will be great seeing that 4.42 speed opposite of OBJ for the next 10 years..

Also whoever wrote that analysis as OBJ being a third option and not being able to separate himself from defenders couldn't be any more wrong.. OBJ gets separation better than Julio, AJ Green and may be even Antonio Brown.. He has top end speed that can matchup with anyone in the league..
40 time is a tough indicator now

Guys train so much for the specific tests, that some may just test better than others, and the times don't really give a good indication of who is faster on the field. Still need to do some of the old scouting and watch these guys. That's why I don't opine much during draft season - and for the reason pointed out above, even the guys who study these players miss things or get it wrong, or some players just end up coming out of nowhere or developing later once they hit the NFL and turning into monsters.

Happens every year - Beckham would have went higher with hindsight, also Donald in his draft probably too. Von Miller. A lot of recent OTs and QBs probably drop out of the 1st based on performance. You really don't know for a few years, so best to be happy we added a potential stud and see how it pans out.

I hope he someday develops into that solid #3 receiver

Shame he doesn't have top end speed ...
