Some Engram grades around the net

Per Ed Valentine, BBV:

NFL.com (Mike Mayock)

"He's a matchup nightmare. He can block on the perimeter. He'll be an immediate impact player. His skill set is closer to Mike Evans. He runs routes like a wide receiver. I don't care what you call him. Eli (Manning) is gonna say 'Wow, I love this kid.'"

Sports Illustrated gave the pick an A-:

If you happened to follow the SI draft rankings, it was Engram and not David Njoku who slotted in as this class’s No. 2 TE, behind O.J. Howard. In that context alone, this is a sneakily strong pick by GM Jerry Reese. It’s also a classic Giants pick, as it bypasses the team’s glaring need at linebacker despite Reuben Foster’s fall and Zach Cunningham’s availability. Offensive tackle could have been in the cards, too, but this pick will continue to push the Giants toward a throw-first-ask-questions-later offense. Engram, Odell Beckham Jr., Brandon Marshall, Sterling Shepard … how does a defense defend this attack?

CBS Sports gave the pick a B:

They need a tight end, but I would have gone for an offensive lineman here. He is a good pass catcher.

FOX Sports says:

The Giants already added Brandon Marshall as a big target for Eli Manning, and now they have another in Engram. He runs a ridiculous 4.42 40, and defenses will be losing sleep trying to keep up with him, Marshall and Odell Beckham Jr. on the same field.

ESPN says:

What He Brings

A four-year starter and two-time captain, Engram is an undersized move tight end who is never going to be a great blocker. However, he's a polished route runner whose combination of size, speed and athletic ability makes him a matchup nightmare. -- Steve Muench

How He Fits

New York's tight ends averaged an NFL-low 7.7 yards per reception last season, and Engram gives the Giants a big-play threat at that position. He also gives head coach Ben McAdoo and quarterback Eli Manning a player who can move around the formation and create favorable matchups. -- Steve Muench

Walter Football gave the pick a C+:

This seems like a bit of a reach, especially with David Njoku still available. It's not an egregious reach though, so I won't grade this selection too poorly. I think a C+ is about right, as Engram fills a big need at tight end and also provides the declining Eli Manning with an intermediate mismatch weapon. At the very worst, Engram can sell some of his memorabilia at Eli's store. In all seriousness, this is an OK pick, but with better players available, the Giants should have moved down a bit. They probably could've gotten Engram (or Njoku) a bit later.

Should have moved down a bit. Umm, that usually involves a partner and they have no idea whether or not we tried to..

Never knew Walter Football was written by a total asshole.
Walter Football blows.

Always taking shots at Eli. Rarely get any mock picks right.

And the trade down comment was, as pointed out, a joke.

Lol my thoughts exactly. The guy writing this does realize there needs to be someone who wants to move into their spot in order to execute a trade down, right?
I guess I misinterpreted

the reactions around here pertaining to Walter Football..I misguidedly thought that through the years it was a respected site as it was alluded to pretty often on here, iirc..

I wouldn't take it so seriously. I chuckled At the joke.

To the football part people always assume you can move down and get the player later, but that's a foolish philosophy in my opinion. You can't assume they will be there any more then you can assume they wouldn't be there
Walter has a lot of respect for the Giants but

I hate when people say

'They could have moved down' or 'There were better players available'...How do they know where the Giants rated the guy? For all we know, he was their top TE and best player available. Even people who dont really like the pick seem to grudgingly admit it fills a need and gives us a huge threat to go with a few already. Most criticism is either 'They should have picked an OL' neglecting the weak OL class (apparently the NFL agrees), or 'I didn't rate the guy this high pre-draft', which is just sour grapes. No idea if they even had offers to trade down or if Engram would still be there, and maybe they just wouldn't risk it.
Walter football is an Eagle fan....after the Eagles beat the Giants
fredgbrown : 4/28/2017 10:14 pm : link
late last year he had the Eagles rated higher then the Giants in his power rankings saying the Giants were the most overrated team in NFL and continued with that theme after the Gmen beat the Redskins to eliminate them then the next week. The Giants may have not have been Super Bowl contenders last year but they were a top 10 team and the Eagles had no business in the top 10.
Is this the best (potentially)

How about of all time? (again Potentially)

Sorry, but I'm not going to admit that it fills a need.

Giants needed running back and blockers before they needed a high profile tight end who can't block.

Eli doesn't have enough balls to throw to keep OBJ, Marshall and Shepard happy, and now we add another.

Why is it so hard for some to admit that Reese is not very good at the draft?

Well, Sparky...when you become an NFL GM you can show 'em all how it's done.

OK. I see you didn't actually watch any Giant's games last season. You missed the deep cover 2 defense which limited OBJ.
Engram is a finesse, Green Bay TE
RetroJint : 4/29/2017 7:21 am : link
and the Giants run that offense so I can see the pick. He is an obvious upgrade over what they've had. Truly a weapon . But he can't block inline. Ellison is going to do that which means their #1 won't be on the field all the time .

This puts into focus McAdoo's offense. The Giants talk about wanting a power, forceful running attack that can close out fourth-quarter leads. But it's just talk . They are a finesse offense that will have to pass the ball the whole game to win.

The Tomlinson pick is mildly disappointing because he's is not going to pressure the quarterback much. They need to be stout against the run because they have Dallas twice a year. I can see that.

The QB reminds me of Scott Brunner . However I'll defer to professional opinion and maintain an open mind.

Not going to kill them about not seeking to upgrade the o-line. Very few linemen went in the first three rounds . Maybe they have somebody targeted for today . But Reese's rent-a-line is going to come under whithering scrutiny starting this summer.

I was in solid the last few drafts . Have to say I'm somewhat concerned so far . I think the other teams in the division might actually have done better then the Giants .
