It will be interesting to see if we just wait for UDFA's to find some O-linemen

been saying all offseason with this OL class you're better off waiting on projects rather than reaching early because of "need". very few prospects this year that could've helped right away. after Lamp was gone I hoped the giants would look elsewhere until day 3
Offensive lineman
eric2425ny : 4/29/2017 3:27 pm : link
I think everyone needs to relax with the calls for taking an offensive lineman. This years draft is frankly not good from an offensive line perspective. I can't remember who posted it this morning but they said only 10 offensive lineman were taken in the first 3 rounds, that is awful. We have seen that many go in just over one round in the past. Plus, the Giants track record is pretty awful in the later rounds when it comes to offensive lineman (see James Brewer, Mitch Petrus, etc). Why waste a pick when you can get guys at RB and DE that will actually see the field at some point. We are going to have to get by with what we have on the offensive line and hope for a stronger draft pool in that area next year.

amen. so sick of people crying about the OL. the only thing that would've been worse was if Reese actually did reach for an OL or 2 just because of "need". this class sucks, I'd rather coach up projects (UGOKWE!) in the 6/7/free agency then reach for oversized TEs like Bolles. I was so happy he went before the Giants pick.

There are Vet OL that could provide depth that I presume will be cut after the draft..
Dave pointed out the Giants interest in Knappe

We will see. I would love to sed Crossan although with Gallman I don't see the room unless he takes over for Vereen.
Scratch Isidora from my list
Mike in NY : 4/29/2017 3:39 pm : link
Add Andreas Knappe, OT, Connecticut

I also would not rule out Zane Gonzalez because he at least could make the roster

We also signed Fluker. He's basically a draft pick. Richburg played the whole season with torn tendons in his hands. Flowers and Hart have another year of experience. Jerry was better last year. We'll add a developmental OT in all likelihood in the next two picks.

I just really like that we got a talented DE. JPP and Vernon played 90% of the snaps last season. That can't happen again.

Just as many of us are so fucking sick of seeing this team being forced to play with a seriously weak o-Line wasting away a great QB. It would have been so easy for him to trade up to get Lamp in that round but JR has no imagination. Then top it off with wasted QB pick and I think us O-line guys have a legitimate gripe with JR.

Good point on Reese not overreacting by reaching for one or more lineman. I can see it now, he takes a guy in the third or fourth round, the guy doesn't pan out because he is likely not very good, and then it's endless comments on here about "fucking Jerry Reach, he can't draft offensive lineman, this is like James Brewer part 9". Now we see why teams with ridiculous cap room were giving mediocre players like Riley Reiff 50M+ contracts, because there are very few good lineman in this draft.

Because we all know that some team was willing to trade down that far for below chart value. Not to mention that if we get Lamp we are looking at a DL with Jay Bromley starting and our only back-up being Robert Thomas.
My guess is

I wanted an offensive lineman this year as well, I think everyone on here would agree that's one of our biggest needs. FA was too expensive this year for crappy players, and the draft is pretty barren this time around. Lamp may be good, but he may also be a bust or an average player not worth trading picks to obtain. We need depth in several areas.

Could be.

Isaiah Ford - Virginia Tech
Austin Carr - Northwestern (slot)
Malachi Dupre - LSU
Bucky Hodges - Virginia Tech
Michael Rector - Stanford
Kevin Lucas - Tulsa

their draft just got even better.
Reese is handling this offseason to perfection
annexOPR : 4/29/2017 3:54 pm : link
1. low cost / huge reward potential on Fluker. Fluker is better than most of these prospects available.

2. Ellison is going to mask a lot of the OL deficiencies. Yes, he's that good of a blocker and I'm glad they paid him over those ridiculous free agent OT contracts.

3. Marshall and Engram additions make this passing game, on paper, almost impossible to match up with.

4. This OL class sucks. It just does. You don't reach for mediocrity and bypass other talent just because cry babies want the false hope of an OL pick. Very few were helping day 1, and pretty much none after Lamp. Get over it

5. Hole left by Hankins will be instantly plugged (literally) by Tomlinson, my favorite pick. Best run stopper in the draft.

Had this class offered better OL, yes I would've wanted an OL added early. Reese chose to play to the drafts strengths with a long term outlook rather than draft mediocrity to possibly fill a need. That's what bad teams do.

This team won 10+ games a year ago and many of the offensive holes have been filled with significant upgrades while keeping a dominant defense in tact. Go root for the Jets
Taking an OL Now
Samiam : 4/29/2017 3:55 pm : link
I think that taking an OL now or later would probably provide the same kind of OL available as a UFDA. If they don't draft any, they will probably have a better shot at signing some after the draft because of a better ability for someone to win a job.
I'd love Hodges

Ok so we'll just go into our Fifth season with a shitty o-line saying, maybe Jerry will fix it next year just like we have been saying for 4 years now. This strategy makes us fall further behind in having a good o-line. By time he fixes the LT and RG weaknesses it will be time to replace Pugh and Richberg thereby keeping us stuck in a cycle where each year we need no less than two serious upgrades to the o-line. You don't add depth when you are in need of starters. And as for taking projects, how have JR's projects worked out? Not too good on average I'd say.

O'Hara just called the Davis pick a waste. Said it should have been an OL to protect Eli. He also criticized the Tomlinson selection, saying he doesn't get enough sacks, and that the Giants could have gotten that type of player later on in the draft. Said the Giants should have selected Dawkins or Moton in the second round. Somebody else on the panel agreed with him about Davis, but not Tomlinson.

I think he would have to make a move to slot WR...not sure he can hold up as a rusher unless he would be a receiving only back. Won't break tackles, not enough wiggle for a small guy.

The way to address this is not to reach for "names" or make believe 5-7 round talent is really good enough for selection in rounds 3-4. As noted we acquired Fluker. Flowers is younger than some of the kids being drafted today, has played well in spurts, and it would be a mistake imo to write him off as a bust as well as try and replace him with lesser talent because some so-called experts are in panic mode.

"Funny" thing is I always know the internal time clock I have before the next pick because the Giants never make a trade. I use that time to prepare the write-ups/updates for the front page.

One of these days, I will get burned. Lucky the Collins trade didn't catch me off guard.
MY PICK:

we gave up our 7th this year to trade up...so now the front office gets an early start contacting potential UDFAs

Either that or a bag of footballs. Not much else, unless Reese was willing to give up a pick from next year. I assume he wasn't. Did we trade a player? Not likely. So that's it except for the UDFAs.

Amhad Bradshaw aside, our 7ths usually don't make it out of camp or are practice squad space space eaters anyway

Jerry's house is only 2 miles away from me. I'll try to drive past, honk and give him a thumbs up for his O-line effort and foresight sometime soon lol
And all of BBI can now
