CONFIRMED UDFA Signings Thread

Matt in SGS : 4/29/2017 4:45 pm
Since the draft is now over, it's a BBI tradition that we have a thread that collects all the confirmed UDFA signees. This thread is not meant to be a wish list, but rather a running updated list of players signed- with validation with a link or twitter confirmation.

Things usually start picking up a couple hours after the draft, so figure around 7ish tonight we should get word of players who the Giants will be bringing in.

FWIW, here are the seven UDFAs with the highest grades per nfl.com
Big Blue Blogger : 4/29/2017 10:36 pm : link
(I know, their scores can be a little goofy and dated, but still...)

Jones, Jarron DT 6'6" 316 Notre Dame 5.53
Buchanan, Collin OL 6'5" 316 Miami (OH) 5.51
Rudolph, Travis WR 6'0" 189 Florida St. 5.49
Scott, Artavis WR 5'10" 193 Clemson 5.47
Cox Jr., Bryan DE 6'3" 265 Florida 5.46
Dural, Travin WR 6'1" 202 LSU 5.46
Johnson, Jadar S 6'0" 206 Clemson 5.45

As CiP said, any of these players would have been a credible draft pick - especially with the seventh-round choice that the Giants gave up to get Bisnowaty. Among the other UDFA additions, Dunker was graded at 5.28, Wheeler at 5.0, Munson at 4.95. Obviously, none of this matter now. On to mini-camp!
Sam Ekwonike OG Coastal Carolina just signed with the Giants

Love the Wheeler pick. He was literally one of Boylhart's top rated prospects overall, not just for OL....
Quote:
Chad is an efficiently, smart, athletic pure left tackle who reminds me a lot of Browns Joe Thomas. Hes a smooth operator working his position with the fluidity of shark in deep waters calmly hunting for its prey. When pass block he comes off the snap quickly establishes his technique and then calmly without losing his techniques adjust to his opponents attack. What I like about Chads play is that he doesnt lose his techniques, believes in them and never seems to panic when an opponent looks as if they are going to be beat him and sack his quarterback. Chads ability to recover and adjust and continue to trust his techniques along with his natural athletic talents shows maturity beyond most left tackles coming out in a draft.
But it comes with a warning...
Quote:
Chads Medical history is the only issue that I think could affect Chads draft status. His history of injuries and operations are extensive and has to be taken into account. I think it would be very difficult for teams to select Chad early in this draft.

Still time, but I imagine they're going quickly.
Jessamen Dunker, OG
5BowlsSoon : 4/29/2017 11:21 pm : link
FWIW, Gil Brandt has this guy ranked 135 on his top 150 board. That reflects a 5th round rating, which ain't bad.

So, it does look like we picked up 3 OL guys who might give us added depth and may even start: Nasty, Dunker, Wheeler

Haven't heard of anyone who hasn't been taken except for Will Likely III out of Maryland...and he's 5'7...and injured.

But other than that, he's awesome. Amazing athleticism.
LOVE that they picked up a FB!

Hope he makes the team. They really need one.

And a couple of extra TEs. AMEN.
We got Travis Rudolph as a UDFA?

How on earth was he not drafted? He's a legit NFL receiver at least when I saw him at FSU

I know, right? He ran a very slow 40 and should've gone back to school, but he would be a fantastic guy to develop. I love the player, the talent and the potential.

Jax Jaguars. He was another highly rated OL guy several people had him high.

I follow OL guys very closely.
At least from what I know of Rudolph,
dpinzow : 4/29/2017 11:35 pm : link
He is at worst a 5th round pick based on talent. Giants got a steal and a guy who can fill in well if Marshall or Shepard get hurt

I think several BBIers mentioned him as a possible complement to Perkins. He's a load, but doesn't seem to have many other NFL qualities.

This is true. However, they did bring in one vet- Blake- to provide some cushion. I was intrigued by Donte Deacon last camp, but he was not ready to play. I wonder whether a year on the practice squad has "gotten him over the hump" to being ready- or if he simply is just too small to play in the NFL.

But very happy he did. Maybe he can keep engram at end when Marshall retires.

Like the o and d line potential signings, hopefully we get some solid depth here and luck out with someone who can start.

Was hoping we would get more than one guy to push our LBs. With no one drafted and seemingly always the weakest link on defense, mildly disappointing.

backups, they found Sensabaugh and Wade that way.
Guys who I like but won't help in 2017
Bob in Newburgh : 4/30/2017 10:51 am : link
Travis Rudolph needs to work with a personal trainer. His speed and vertical for a guy with average size won't get him past camp competition. PS guy, future depends on athletics improving combined with intangibles.

Wheeler needs strength training. He is definitely competing for a PS slot, not roster slot, in camp.

Spoke too soon on the lack of UDFA CB signings. Giants will sign Iowa State CB Nigel Tribune, per source.
Expanding on Bob's point about the practice squad...
Big Blue Blogger : 4/30/2017 11:11 am : link
Sure, it would be nice to get immediate help from the UDFA crop, but that's not the only way to benefit from these signings. In some ways, the team may reap more by parking these guys on the practice squad and conserving their full four years of cost control. Obviously, PS players have to clear waivers and remain free to sign elsewhere; but having passed through the draft and finding the Giants to be their best opportunity, they aren't all that likely to get a better offer elsewhere unless another team suffers a major injury wave at a particular position.

For signees like Jones and Wheeler, who have battled injuries, or Johnson, Dunker and Rudolph, who need time in an NFL program, 2017 is likely a redshirt year anyway. It's better for the team if they don't earn a year of service while spending game day in street clothes.

Tribune's final year at Iowa State was derailed by an arrest for drunk driving, among their things. He was suspended, played just six games, and seems to have dropped off the draft radar.

Ive never watched a down of him playing
Jim in Forest Hills : 4/30/2017 11:19 am : link
but Dunker's writeups and measureables are impressive.
FWIW, here are Tribune's Pro Day numbers:
Big Blue Blogger : 4/30/2017 11:26 am : link
BP- 16, VJ- 35.5", BJ- 10' 6", 40- 4.46, 3-Cone- 7.21

Perfectly respectable stuff there, even adjusting for typical pro-day distortion. He's not real big, but not particularly undersized either.

bob_in_ec : 4/30/2017 11:27 am : link
Will Likely is definitely an impact player for special teams as punt or kickoff returner. He had a torn ACL that ended his season early.

Most teams in this league don't have two legitimate starters.

Perspective.

USC redshirt senior left tackle Chad Wheeler was named a first team All-American by CampusInsiders.com, becoming the Trojans third All-American in 2016.

A third name will go up on USCs All-American walk after this season, as Trojan left tackle Chad Wheeler was voted to the Campus Insiders All-American first team.

The All-American nod is the cherry on top of an exceptional redshirt senior season for Wheeler, who was also named to the All-Pac-12 first team and took home honors as one of USCs Linemen of the Year.

The left tackle protected Sam Darnolds blindside and helped the Trojans limit opposing teams to just 11 sacks on the season the best mark in the conference.
