No guarantee Eli gets another contract

Section131 : 4/29/2017 6:45 pm
I am not one of you jumping off a ledge because Reese decided to spend a 3rd round pick on a potential Eli successor instead of wasting it on a OL prospect in the worst OL draft class in maybe 20 years.

Did we ever think that even if Eli WANTS to play another 5 years, maybe the Giants don't want to pay him past the remaining 3 years. And they certainly aren't going to give him $20 million anymore, even if he's still got gas left in the tank.

It was smart of Reese and the FO to look ahead. They didn't force the issue, they didn't trade up, they didn't lose draft picks, they valued this QB at the spot they were in and made a move for the future.

Guess what... that's what championship organizations do!
He's not playing more than another three years

Eli's been pretty durable

Of course you never know. Who thought Peyton was going to be out an entire season?
From a business point of view:
SHO'NUFF : 4/29/2017 6:53 pm : link
Smart move by Reese to have some insurance. Do we really want to suffer another 10-year period of Dave Brown, Kent Graham and Jesse Palmer?

From Eli point of view: This guy is sneaky competitive and we will probably have to call Security to drag him out of the facility, kicking and screaming, when it is all said and done. I say he has another 5 productive years, barring injury. He has a knack of getting rid of the ball early when in trouble, so it's a possibility.

From the Webb Slinger point of view: If I'm him, I'm actually kinda upset knowing Eli's longevity iron man streak. From reading the articles about him, I really don't think he wants to sit around rotting away on the bench for 3-4 years a la Nassib. I say he starts to get inpatient around year 2 and starts making trade demands.

From a draft value point of view: As much as I like the Webb pick, I wonder if we could have drafted someone with more immediate impact in the 3rd round, and then draft Brad Kaaya in the later rounds as our project/insurance.

Where the hell are you getting that? He said he had no expectations. This is a perfect 2-3 year scenario. Three years left on contract.....boom.

As much as people like to say Eli can play until 42......it is unlikely. And I am huge Eli fan.
when he wins his 3rd SB this year ...
annexOPR : 4/29/2017 7:02 pm : link
who knows what he'll do. go out on top with the ability to walk for the rest of his life?
He can be upset all he wants. Nobody thinks he's ready to play
Ten Ton Hammer : 4/29/2017 7:05 pm : link
This year. It's not like his college resume suggests he's Andrew Luck.
I don't think Eli re-ups when his contract is done.

I actually think Eli hangs it up in two years.
I like the pick.
Barring catrostrophic injury

He's gonna play out the contract. I have been viewing Eli as having 3 potentially good years left, his age 36-38 seasons. Very few franchise qbs play beyond that. All breaks right he could have decent football beyond that but I think the contract ends at a great age for us. The caliber QB we saw in 2015 I thought he could be last year and I still think he can be next year. But it's year by year at this point his play could fall off quick. He have 3 potentially productive years secured IMO, how productive the expectations we'll take year by year. I think good enough to give us a shot to compete with any team, only so many QBs you can say that about.
Doesn't eli

I actually had that vision yesterday. He wins another Superbowl this year, than retires.
I think he can still sling it
mattlawson : 4/29/2017 7:51 pm : link
And he can retire whenever the hell he wants to
agree that Eli has maybe 3 years left before retirement
Steve in South Jersey : 4/29/2017 7:56 pm : link
but have doubts that Webb is his successor ... maybe the transition between Eli and the next franchise QB.

No. Three
Whatever happens..

we need to get Web into the game on occasion. Even during garbage time Eli stays in there. Not sure how you get a backup quality game time when he never sniffs the field.

Shit... maybe Eli can deflate a few footballs so our backup can get some action.

He has 3 years left on the contract. But the last 2 years, there is a $5mil roster bonus due on the 3rd day of the league year. He could be cut next year witha $12.4 mil cap hit. If he is cut in the final year, the cap hit is $6.2.
Eli's Contract - ( New Window )
if this ends as ugly as with Simms
Steve in South Jersey : 4/29/2017 8:49 pm : link
I may just not watch football anymore. Not sure that I want to go through that again.
He could play 5 more years
Ron Johnson 30 : 4/29/2017 8:59 pm : link
or suffer serious injury in week 1. You have to be prepared

Perfect ending to a sports career only a very few people can dream of. Maybe he gets tempted to try for a repeat but rolling the dice once again,,,, For a QB, 36 is starting to get pretty old, but for the rest of your life it is very young.
Webb
WillVAB : 4/29/2017 11:41 pm : link
Dave TE compared him to Ryan Mallet

Sy compared him to Brock Osweiler

Boylhart compared him to Mark Sanchez

I don't think Eli has anything to worry about w regards to Webb.
Pretty sure that this will be the case
glowrider : 4/30/2017 1:29 am : link
He ma still have some juice after this contract but for what he'll command it probably won't be worth it. $20m+ for a late 30s QB? I don't doubt Eli's physical ability, but at some point soon he won't make financial sense. I think that will be the deciding factor.

I agree with this.
It's all so performance and health related

I expect him to play out his contract. I also expect him to have three more Super Bowl rings at the time. People will say, "don't you want to see if you can win four Super Bowls in a row?" and he'll reply "I've already got five rings and I don't like to wear jewelry on my throwing hand even if I no longer need it to throw a football."
No guarantee is an understatement. He won't get another deal.
Jimmy Googs : 4/30/2017 7:41 am : link
Eli showed certain signs last season that he is in decline. Not off a cliff mind you, but enough misses that not everything can be blamed on the porous O-line.

You heard it from McAdoo after the season and you heard it loud and clear from the FO on Saturday with the pick.

He has enough in the tank to be a winner for maybe a couple years imv but that's about it...

In fairness, Boylhart did qualify that statement...

I think he could be as good as Jeff Garcia who was a good starting quarterback for the 49ers but right now all I see is the inconsistency of a Mark Sanchez.
