I was already excited about the pick, but man that is a distinct difference in speed. Reed is a handful.
So excited about Engram.

Both as a cover 2 buster down the seam and a third down machine. What LB or S can deal with that quickness and size? And Eli throws a gorgeous seam ball.

That is what is funny. If he was a WR he would be a top 10 pick. I mean look at the WRs that got drafted in the top 10 this year.
if he was a WR.....where would he be drafted

I just hope we actually use his speed effectively. No more of these routes where you run 8 yards, stop and turn around to face Eli.

It's arguablme he's Less risk than Ross who's slight build and injury history. Davis who looks the part played vs lesser competition, and Mike Wlliams who no one knows if he's more Mike Evans or USCs version of Mike Williams.

I said this on draft night ... steal of the draft because of the "TE" label

I also said this afternoon I actually expect him to ultimately be Marshalls replacement at receiver ... he is simply a freak of nature that needs to be on the field - anywhere
Why are we calling him a TE?
Natek212 : 4/29/2017 9:21 pm : link
He's clearly a WR. Not that that is a bad thing. I don't see him ever lining up like a traditional TE. Just not big enough.

christian : 4/29/2017 9:41 pm : link
His agent should have announced a move to WR after his work out. He's got the speed and size to go outside.
That's nuts

the important thing
area junc : 4/29/2017 10:09 pm : link
is he's fearless with that speed. He'll go right through the teeth of the D full throttle. Think we've got a special player here.
Tired of hearing he is not a TE
est1986 : 4/29/2017 10:18 pm : link
Because he is too fast for a TE... or because he moves like a WR... or because he is too small to be a TE... Reed was the same size coming out... He is the same size as Shannon Sharpe, the GOAT Tony G wasn't much bigger in size. He is a willing blocker, he can hit LBs and DBs, maybe or maybe not he can or can't chip DEs, big deal, we didnt get him for that we got Ellison for that... cant wait till we play Dallas to show off our own stud tight end. Witten is on his last leg and Engram is going to begin to destroy Dallas for many years to come, would be awesome.

but stats don't win games.
I'm Concerned that he's a tweener, the assumption that he can go to WR is simply not necessarily valid.
Don't agree with the poster that thinks he's big enuf to be an effective TE.
Is he really a slot receiver? Does he have a position in the pros?
I might be more excited if we Hadn't signed Marshall and didn't have Vereen coming back.
Is he a redundancy against those two?
And does Mac have the skill to incorporate his skill set into an offense that went backwards under his first year of stewardship.?
I know the game's changed but do they still use ONE ball?
Does he help running game, that desperately needs help?
Not Debby Downer more like Discerning Diana or Questioning Gerry or.......

I'm saying he is not a TE, but a WR, because he will never line up as a traditional TE, he will play more often than not as a slot WR. He will not play the same position as Tony Gonzalez, Jason Witten, Shannon Sharpe, etc. If that's what you're hoping for, I think you're going to be let down.

That said, I think he will be a great receiving threat for us, and will help Eli immensely. I wouldn't be surprised if he is split out wide on occasion as well, while OBJ takes the middle. I don't understand why he is labeled a TE and not a WR, which will be his position in the NFL.
I agree with the positvie reviews above
Pete in VA : 4/29/2017 11:45 pm : link
based on what I've seen, he's the best receiver in the draft. fast as shit, elusive, big and powerful. Awesome. He's got superstar written all over him.
Reed's 4.72 40 at the Combine was disappointing.
Big Blue Blogger : 4/29/2017 11:46 pm : link
Then he declined to run at Florida's pro day, though he did well in position drills.

Reed plays faster than a typical 4.7 TE, but he was also the 85th pick in the Draft, not the 23rd. Engram should be a better prospect, and he is.
Reed is an impact NFL player
KWALL2 : 4/30/2017 1:00 am : link
A Great player. Our guy plays the exact same game...except he blows his doors off with an acceleration/speed/explosion ability that is off every chart.

Not only do you see it in this video on a timed run, but you see it on the field. That video of him catching the 5 yard hook vs Auburn and then ripping past 5 defenders gives me wood. Nobody does that from that spot. This wasn't klutztown state. He was on a field with SEC defender and they were running in mud.

Engram is an exceptional talent. We got lucky that he was still there. By week 4, maybe sooner, NFL teams will realize the mistake they made by passing on Engram.

This is something I have been saying for years. Not about Engram of course but about game speed. Some guys produce a great time in the 40 off of the football field. However, when the ball is snapped they are at half speed. Often because of effort but also because they are processing the game mentally and it slows them down.

I have seen slower guys just play the game faster than everyone else. When you get to the defensive backfield for example, anticipation and your break on the ball actually have nothing to do with your 40 time and everything to do with football IQ.
just wow!
Gregorio : 4/30/2017 6:49 am : link
both his burst off the starting line, and acceleration throughout the 40 are outstanding.
Plus, Jordan Reed won't be in the NFL much longer.

Reed's game isn't speed. It's about using his body ...
Boy Cord : 4/30/2017 10:28 am : link
... to gain position and make people miss. He embarrasses defenders in space like a Tim Hardaway cross over. I hate the phuker.

I love Engram's speed and from what I hear he has great hands. Not sure he will have the shake-and-bake Rees has. Although, that size and speed is going to be in the back of defenders' heads all day long.
He's

going to be awesome to have in Madden 18.
Really look at how the Giants
area junc : 4/30/2017 10:56 am : link
use their TE. This is not Coughlin and Gilbride's offense with the traditional Y. He has basically combined it with the FB position. The F'n guy is moving all over the place. Constantly shifting, back-setting, winged out, detached, starting from 2 point stances, etc.

Engram is a perfect fit for how McAdoo uses his TE and that's why we drafted him in the 1st round

entire tight end group at the on field catching drills at the combine. I DVR'd the whole thing and went back and watched it. Engram is in another league as far as catching skills go. Better than Howard and way better than Njoku. After his flawless performance in the gauntlet drill Mayock and Jeremiah basically said it couldn't be done any better.
That's very impressive...

I think this shows the speed/explosion translating to the field. What do you think?

That's a 5 yard gain for just about any other TE.

This is the play that has me convinced he'll be an immediate impact player and star.

I saw that gif or highlight last week and stopped watching his highlight reel right there. That was all I needed to see! The way he turns on the jets from a near flat footed position --that's special talent. That's football speed to along with track speed. Can't wait to see this kid rumble on Sundays for Big Blue.

This draft pick has me excited about the Giants again.

Improves the worst unit on the team with a potential game changer. Can't wait to see how they use him.

I loved me some Biudda Baker but Engram was my 2nd choice for that pick. He's going to be a good one for us.

It feels like too many times in the past, our draft or free agent moves have us predicting a devastating offense. And then it doesn't pan out that way.
Not really..

Last year our FA defensive signings pointed to an upgraded D and it didn't disappoint.

The years we drafted Nicks, Steve Smith or signed Plax, etc - improved the offense immediately.

Outside of last year, we've had a consistently good offense for the better part of a decade.
