Eli personally called Davis Webb to welcome him to NY

dpinzow : 4/30/2017 7:22 pm
At least that's what Serby reports in the NY Post in the first few sentences of his column:

"The unexpected call came in to Davis Webb early Saturday, and it speaks volumes about the man making it.

It was Eli Manning, The Post learned, welcoming the rookie quarterback who one day could be his successor.

Matt Webb, the father of the Giants’ third-round pick, was at a track meet at Centennial High, where he is athletic coordinator and football coach, when he received this text:

“Hey Dad, call me.”

Dad called him.

“I got to speak with Eli this morning,” an excited Davis told his father.

“He was pretty happy that he had taken the time out from his schedule to say, ‘Hey man, welcome to the team and look forward to getting to meet you,’ ” Matt Webb said."

The pranks will be well executed, funny as hell and if taken in the right vein will enhance the kid's status and accelerate his acceptance by the rest of the team.

They won't be Farvesque efforts to humiliate the kid.
The way I look at it is that Eli has very thick skin
David in LA : 4/30/2017 7:59 pm : link
the call to let him know that they're going QB probably wasn't even necessary, and I'm sure Eli didn't take it as a slight. I feel a lot of the most vocal critics hate him out of what the pick represents, and that's a bridge from one era to an unknown. But for fuck's sake, Patriots expended 2nd and 3rd round picks on backups in hopes of finding Brady's possible successor. Seahawks gave Matt Flynn a fairly large deal, and they spent a 3rd on some kid named Russell Wilson. Cowboys took Dak. Patriots gave Bledsoe a $100m deal and took a flier on Brady. Teams should ALWAYS be keeping an eye open for a QB if they think there's a chance the kid could be good, it'd be irresponsible not to take a flier. The potential payoff greatly outweighs any negative from the pick not working out. A 3rd round pick won't set you back a few years. Not picking a successor and seeing the wheels fall off on a QB all of a sudden can.

tell me how much money ill make in 5 years....you seem to have a crystal ball. i fucking love debbie downers who have ZERO ability to prove anything, yet make assumptions like this. you have NO CLUE as to whether or not he can be the successor...its an uninformed opinion at best. who knew brady would replace anyone...he was a 7th rounder. you have no clue how this kid may or may not learn the game and improve under professional coaching

Nope. Eli won't play out his contract. Like it or not, Webb will get the first chance. Whether he can take it and run with it is another question. But he will be first in line.

Here's my take:

Webb is a project with some promise that will compete with Geno Smith for the #2 spot this year, and if he develops, could potentially be Eli's successor.

That is not to say if someone amazing falls to the Giants at #32 next year they won't take him too and let him compete with Webb. ;)

because Eli is a class act ... I really want Eli to go out on top with another SB and then walk away from the game healthy

No doubt in my mind he will help Webb in anyway possible along the way ... Webb's in a great spot to learn from 1 of the best (on and off the field) for 2-3 years.

Webb could very well be the QB of the future if he puts in the effort. Physically he "looks the part". Not surprised but obviously glad Eli reached out. Love Eli.

Stop it. You can t be open minded and logical her. You must state your opinions definitively as in: " Eli s successor is not here."

No room for discussion,, it s a fact.

Similar to how Reese s draft stinks because some draft nerds who gather info from high light videos and other' s opinions become incredulous when the people who actually get paid to make those decisions go in another direction

lol...right? i mean jesus. can the kid put on a giants jersey before we cut him? He is clearly a talented kid, how can any of us know exactly how his career goes. at this point i want this kid to come in and dominate, not just because im a giants fan, but because its insane to think people hating so much on him already exist. i am perfectly fine with the pick, you always look for a replacement when your QB ages. its to help you not end up like the browns who every year have to look for someone. nassib was the right pick(altho the trade up was tough to handle) and so is this kid. nassib sucked, hopefully this kid sticks
Webb is a classic "Stand and Deliver" type QB ....
Manny in CA : 5/1/2017 12:32 am : link

That's why he was beaten out by Mahomes at Tech (whose offense is built on chaotic, athletically based QB); not one who analyzes and executes the optimum option.

He throws a strong, beautiful & accurate ball. This might be heresy, but in that respect he kind of reminds me of the Master, himself - Tom Brady.

I am hoping Webb soaks its up and gets lots of opportunities

How bad would it look, image wise, if he made an exception and didn't call a third round QB?

If Eli can do one thing for Webb, I would hope that Eli would teach him the value of film study and the study level that takes place in the QB room. Webb has the physical tools- and the coaches can handle any adjustments to motion or whatever.

One of Eli's strengths has been how seriously he takes his study of the game. Eli is reaching the point where his big-play ability is based less on pure talent than it is on what he saw on film. If he can pass that on to Webb, that could make a world of difference between "just another talented QB" and a true NFL QB.

The article says that Webb has a legendary football obsession, the type of gym rat and film junkie that will challenge Manning as first to arrive and last to leave.

You know, tell him not to worry about showing up for OTA's or his passing camp, don't worry about reading the playbook because there is plenty of time for that once the preseason starts, and being on time for meetings is optional.
