NFT: Looking for gift ideas for my supervisor & mentor...

Dave in Buffalo : 5/11/2017 6:35 pm
I'm finishing up my internship for grad school (social work). I was very fortunate to be with an excellent clinic, working under a very intelligent and highly capable individual who cared a great deal. I've been working with individuals who suffer from mental illness and chemical addiction. Almost all suffer a great deal of dysfunction in their daily lives as well. It's been a great experience, and I'm looking for ideas for a gift for my supervisor. Beyond his large family and work, he doesn't have many other interests. He's not into sports. He's ex-airforce so he does like to work out and stay in shape.

Looking for gift ideas. I would like to keep it under $100.

Thanks in advance!
Buy him a

Always a winner. If you want you could splurge for a personalized version. "_______ is the world's greatest boss" - something like that. Will go over big I think.

(This may sound like a factious reply, but the truth is I still have (and use) a mug an employee gave me alonist 20 years ago.)

And I think about the employee that gave it to me.
Don't know why my post didn't include a proper subject line...

But him a "World's Greatest Boss" coffee mug" is what I typed and what showed up in the preview before I submitted it.

"Buy him a..." I hate auto correct.
Dude, I LIKE!!!

Although. He ALWAYS uses the same water bottle. I'm gonna see if i can get him a custom water bottle that says World's greatest Mentor! Maybe something with some cool shit on it as well. A fancy water bottle with World's greatest mentor!

Great idea! Thanks man!!!

You can't go wrong with a nice high quality pen

You can pick up a nice Monte Blanc for $200 and get it personalized for him/her

Or Bic.
Find out if he has a favorite restaurant and get a gift....

certificate from it. Everybody likes to go out for dinner and not pay (or pay less).
Regardless of what you decide to give

Include a nice hand written note of thanks describing what he meant to you will likley be more cherished over time than the purchased gift.
If he is up north like you

a teavana thermos and some really nice sets of loose-leaf tea would be a good gift. My wife got them for me and I love it.
I'd rather have a $5 coffee mug

with a cheesy saying than a $200 pen.
Crispino's idea is a good one

If his kids are younger, include a note saying you'll babysit while he takes the wife out!

Or a gift card to a family restaurant that he can enjoy with his kids too.

A framed print makes a nice gift.

If you can find something thematically appropriate, that would fit with his decor, he's likely to hang it in his office and see it every day, and be reminded of your appreciation. Since he's ex Air Force, maybe something aerial? That sort of fits with his patients trying to overcome addiction, etc.

No matter what you decide, a sincere letter would be the best gift for a supervisor and mentor. I know that I've always cherished sincere feedback from my subordinates more than any material goods.
