Good Kratch mailbag: Future contracts; RT; MLB; Thomas; CB

Defenderdawg : 5/14/2017 8:03 am
"Summing up: The first step for the Giants will be dealing with Pugh and Richburg, Keeping both is going to be a challenge, especially if they both have strong contract years. They could use the franchise tag, but they also have to be wary of losing valuable rollover cash with Beckham and Collins on the horizon.
Once Pugh and Richburg are decided, things will be clearer. It would be stunning if the Giants can’t get at least one of them signed. If they had to choose, it’s 50-50 at this point. With Beckham and Collins, they have no choice, really, but to pay them what it takes. It’s going to be an interesting next few offseasons for the Giants."

No telling how it unfolds contract-wise

I still think there's a chance that OBJ gets done before the start of this season. And I think it's one or the other between Richburg and Pugh. The only thing separating either of them from a long term deal is their injury histories. If they both have healthy years, they will both be re-signed. As for Collins, he needs to duplicate last year's performance before I would put him anywhere near the same category as OBJ. He is a strong safety on a defense that emphasizes pass-rushers and cover corners, so I don't expect them to break the bank for him.
First herzlich, now goodson, staff has some tricks up their sleeves

There's no doubt Goodson, last year's fourth-round pick, will play a much bigger role on offense in 2017.
Oy!

I meant to say "I don't think it's one or the other between Pugh and Richburg."

Pretty sure that's a typo.
Should say Defense.
What happens with this year's class impacts pugh and richburg I would

Think as well. Hart is up in two seasons and while flowers has a 5th year option, he is only another year away. If these guys develop at tackle and biz or the udfa options either flop or are better options inside, it changes that dynamic too. We don't really have any luxury with Beckham or Collins.

I know, was kidding around
I think it will be much easier replacing Pugh.....
Simms11 : 5/14/2017 8:54 am : link
when the time comes. Guards are easier to find IMO. Richburg has to play better then last year, but I think being in the middle and knowing this offense, helping the QB is also critical and I think he'll be the guy that they extend.

As far as OBJ and Collins, it's a no-brainer. You have to re-sign both of these guys. These type of Pro Bowl, All-Pro talents don't grow on trees and when you have them, you need to keep them.

Agree, particularly left guards. One thing that is more difficult to find are OO-linemen with Pugh's versatility.

Agreed.

I was hoping the Giants might draft a kid who could replace Pugh next year and they might have found him in UDFA Jessamen Dunker. He was up and down at the Senior Bowl, but mostly up. I figure he's worth developing. We'll see.

There is the 5th year option on 1st round draft picks, but keep in mind the 5th year is different for those selected in Top 10 versus the rest of the 1st round. At this point, we are all hoping Flowers demonstrates competence at LT. But the reality is unless he turns into Joe Thomas this next season, the Giants won't even consider the 5th year on Flowers. Currently, the 5th year for Top 10 OL is $13 mil guaranteed. The decision to pick up his 5th year must be made by next May. You can name certain players on the Giants and around the league that are worth $13 mil. Flowers isn't one of them.
How ironic

to even think we cannot sign OUR offensive lineman...

E.X.A.C.T.L.Y.

It's not as if we're dealing with a couple of perennial All-Pros here.

Geez... if they want too much, let them walk.

Please.

Agreed and I don't see them giving huge contracts to both Pugh and Richburg.
Richburg's a keeper.
Klaatu : 5/14/2017 10:50 am : link
He's missed one game in three years - one - and in 2015 he more than justified the Giants drafting him in the 2nd round. It's too bad his 2016 campaign was marred by an injury to his snapping hand, but reports are that he's completely healthy now. Let's hope he stays that way.
Great

Richburg and Pugh are the "cornerstones" of the OL?
Vanzetti : 5/14/2017 10:31 pm : link
The OL sucks so who cares who the cornerstones are? That's like asking, who was the cornerstone of the Giants Tight Ends last year?
I'd take Richburg over Pugh as well
adamg : 5/14/2017 10:44 pm : link
Doesn't miss games year in and out. Probably be more affordable. He and Jerry seem to be work buds and can hold down some consistency at the C and RG spots, giving us more continuity which losing Richburg rather than Pugh would entail.

If Dunker can be a true pro... bye bye Pughiladelphia.

Lol. my thoughts exactly.
I take Richburg as well
GuzzaBlue : 5/15/2017 1:27 pm : link
It is much easier to find Guards than Centers as mentioned above. Even right now it seems like the Giants have 10 guys who can play G and 3 who can play T and 2 who can play C. If Richburg does not have a great season, he may come at somewhat of a bargain as well.
My earlier typo aside...
Milton : 5/15/2017 2:15 pm : link
They don't have to choose between the two. They should put a price on each based on the quality of their play and if both are willing to play for the amount offered, they should both be signed.
I would go with Richburg also
Jay on the Island : 5/15/2017 5:28 pm : link
Pugh's concussion history is a big reason why. The Giants also have a couple of talented young players (Bisnowaty and Dunker) who may be able to replace Pugh in a year.
Pugh and Richburg
LakeGeorgeGiant : 5/15/2017 6:56 pm : link
both have the ability to be part of the solution.

The stance some of you are taking, that because the OL sucked neither is worth worrying about? In typical BBI style, that is very shortsighted.

Everything is black and white with some of you.

The biggest issue with Pugh is the health question. If he stays healthy, and Richburg plays solid they will likely both get a fair offer from the Giants.

Neither is irreplaceable, but Pugh is solid, and we may not have seen the best of Weston yet.
