We do not know the status of Darien Thompson and his injury and his projected return or if he will return to form.
We have such a small sample size from him we truly don't know what we have.
Adams is a good player, but better back up and we did not draft any players outside of the UDFA that we are hoping pans out.
Since DRC is getting up in age, but still productive why not pay him to be our FS only on these conditions.
1. Thompson is not good or too injured to return to form.
2. the players we have on roster are not viable options.
3. we can re negotiate his contract.
I think Jadar Johnson has a good shot at making the team. As the starting safety for Clemson, he has played against top competition.
At Clemson, he was used primarily as a strong safety and the knock on him is that he wasn't overly physical in the run game (ala Collins). But he is praised for his ball hawking skills and has the speed and range to play centerfield.
I think the competition between Adams and Johnson will be intense this summer. I really don't think Mykkele Thompson will make the team unless he has made incredible leaps in his game and is super healthy. If he has any nicks or bruises that he complains about, he's gone. And if he doesn't beat out Adams and Johnson, he's probably toast.
Although playing SS at Clemson, he seems like an ideal FS going into the future.
Adams was very solid for a rookie and I'd expect him to make a jump.
Jadar Johnson's is an URFA that struggled to tackle in college. Putting him ahead of Adams isn't realistic imo.
This is a fail safe idea if Thompson cannot come back from the lis franc injury and the other options we have don't pan out.
I'm not proposing this happens this year, but projected future. DRC moving to safety can be a good long term solution at a position we have not completely filled since K. Phillips
It's not as hard as you think and not as easy, it DRC is smart and rangy he will manage.
That sounds so much better...
There is no depth after Collins......if Thompson can't stay on the field, Adams is not the answer.....If Reese thinks he is, OC's will definitely go after him this year....
It's just surprising we didn't go after a CB/S, in a draft that was loaded with them.....
Reese must be crossing his fingers for a cut from some other team....
Thompson had his surgery last November, so unless he has a setback he should be good-to-go when training camp begins.
With or without him, though, the competition at FS looks to be stiffer than it has been in recent years. If you buy what PFF is selling, than only Keanu Neal had a higher grade among rookie Safeties than Andrew Adams had last year. Not bad for a UDFA who wasn't even on the roster when the season began. I like Jadar Johnson's chances to make the team. Yes, his tackling leaves much to be desired, but his ball skills are undeniable. Throw fellow UDFA Trey Robinson into the mix and I'd bet we see the last of the oft-injured Mykkele Thompson and Nat Berhe. I don't think the situation at Safety is as dire as some people believe.
Lisfranc foot ailment is 'bizarre injury' - ( New Window )
Interesting take. I wouldn't get all worked up about the 1 2 3. He's the slot corner which is a starter. If they weren't concerned about keeping him fresh he would play over apple on the outside in 2 wr sets. Because of his age/durability they pick and choose his spots. Technically speaking yea, he's the nickel corner.

as for johnson....have any of you watched his film, he takes terrible angles to the ball carrier and loves to make tackles from behind and ride the ball carrier down

His ball skills are undeniable, as he showed in the East-West Game, and he was voted 1st Team All-ACC Football in the coaches poll. He's a true Centerfielder as a FS, with the instincts, quickness, and overall athleticism to excel in that role. We've got plenty of guys who can drop the hammer on somebody, but that's not the reason we drafted Darian Thompson last year, and that's why I think Johnson will stick this year.
