This is the third best Alien movie after the first two, but don't be surprised if repeat viewings kick it up a notch.
I was relieved to see this

initial feedback wasn't good but I hopped on RT earlier this week and it was generally positive.
Any answers

I think it is supposed to link to Prometheus. It's set 10 years after, which is 20 years before Alien. Plenty of time for more prequels.

Yup, it's the sequel to the prequel. lol

got good reviews too. And it might be the most frustrating but nice to look at movie of all time. It's glossy and pretty but smells like total shit. Hopefully Ridley took his sane pills before he made this one.

Prometheus is a better movie then its given credit for if you understand the amazing religious undertones/Jesus is an engineer that we killed theory. I have avoided all trailers for this movie, so I do not have it spoiled just like Prometheus was with its trailers.

Covenant takes place 10 years after Prometheus, and is a sequel. Some of the questions from Prometheus are answered, but many are not, and many new questions are raised and not answered (setting up for future movies to bridge to the original Alien). The best description of this movie I've seen is that it's a combo of Prometheus and Alien; it's definitely more bloody and violent than Prometheus.

The plot wasn't the problem although it did leave a lot of unanswered questions. That's fine though. It was the finer points or certain sequences that made absolutely no sense. I'd list them all but it's been 5 years. We know them all by now.

There are supposed to be 2 more movies after this one to get us to the original Alien.
I ignore reviews

If something looks interesting to me, I check it out.

I've never understood the phenomenon of letting other people's opinions determine whether I will see a film. Most people wouldn't know good film if it bit them on the ass.

The general public feels that Dead Pool, The Dark Knight and The Avengers are quality films. Need I say more?

As for Covenant, I like Ridley Scott, and I think the movie has potential.

Prometheus had some issues, but the fact that it is universally panned by the same public that points to Marvel as the pinnacle of cinema is laughable. If nothing else it was skillfully shot. The problems were in the script.
I don't take reviews as gospel

but they are helpful when you have limited time and want to weed out the stuff you can wait until later to see. 5 years ago my wife and I would see everything, but with a house and kid our weekends are packed.

The key to reviews is weeding out the BS. You can tell which writers have an axe to grind and which are more genuine. If a movie gets 75%/80% or greater on RT chances are its worth making the time for even if I end up not loving the movie (I can still find entertainment in movies I don't love). More importantly, when a move gets a terrible score, I know I can skip it entirely.

What's the last movie that was rated poorly that ended up being any good? Live By Night? XXX The Return of Xander Cage? What about King Arthur?
meh

people enjoyed Deadpool and the rest of those comic book movies, what's the problem? Outside of TDK I don't think anyone is talking about them being all time great movies (TDK definitely was at the time which I disagree with).

People enjoy movies for different reasons. Some people want to laugh, others want to be entertained, and some want a gripping drama with thoughtful dialogue.

shame the Prometheus remaining crew did not send the memo to the incoming crew 10 years later. lol

Critical reviews don't come from the general public.
