NFT: Oh God...Mike Greenberg's New ESPN TV Show

Mr. Bungle : 5/16/2017 1:25 pm
I knew that Mike & Mike in the Morning was coming to an end, but I didn't know anything about either Mike's future at ESPN. Maybe this has been public knowledge for a while, but it's the first time I'm seeing it:

Quote:
Mike Greenberg will be moving to his long-rumored new morning show on ESPN that will air weekdays from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.. While we don't know the name of that show or many of the details, it is expected be something much more like "Good Morning America" or "Live with Kelly" — a traditional morning talk show, with some traditional "SportsCenter" elements sprinkled in.

Who the hell is a show like that geared toward???

Not so fast - Kenny Mayne's role is expanding again!
Greenberg
UConn4523 : 5/16/2017 1:28 pm : link
yuck. I'm sure he's a nice guy and all but he's just not what the sports world needs. I'm a dad, I can't relate to him at all and that's really the only value he has since that's the only angle they ever take with him.

Who tunes in to watch Mike Greenberg?
Kanell > Greenberg

What a joke
Kenny Mayne is still alive?
Greg from LI : 5/16/2017 1:29 pm : link
Well I'll be damned. Had no idea.
Figures..

Does he still press his entire fucking face up against the microphone when he talks? I can't stand that.

Haha, so true.
Really need to cater to that house wife community

put Jemele Hill on at that time...give me back my 6PM regular SportsCenter.
I may be in the minority here but I enjoy Mike & Mike every morning.
BigBlue2112 : 5/16/2017 2:07 pm : link
I was hoping it was going to be Golic and Booger McFarland together. He's great on all the shows. But I'm still looking forward to the Wingo/Golic show.

But- the new 6:00 show with J. Hill is HORRIBLE...my god how does she get her own prime time hour and people who bring value such as Werder, Stark, Kanell, LeBrun, etc get cut.

Apparently Stephen A Smith makes over 4 mil/year too to shout at the TV.

ESPN is a scrambling mess right now.

I've always found Trey "And, Oh, By The Way" Wingo to be pretty annoying.
Yeah, I don't mind 'Mike & Mike'

Unless they're talking about Golic's eating habits or other idiotic stuff that nobody cares about.

So, you dislike about 97% of the show then?
ESPN bungles it once again

is absolutely unwatchable. And that's even with the fact I'd love you know-you-what the host.
Who cares about Greenberg or Golic?

I can't wait for the Bomani Jones and Pablo Torre show, boy howdy!

I'm not saying it from the ole' Fuck ESPN!" attitude, but I completely agree. What sports fan wants to watch this? And furthermore, what non-sports fan would choose this over typical morning shows?
It really is lazy programming.
Mike in Long Beach : 5/16/2017 2:57 pm : link
There are so many quality angles in sports that people would take interest in. Literally every professional athlete on the planet has some angle you could parlay into an interesting human interest piece. Pretty much no one who gets that successful in sports doesn't have a story.

Jeter was talking the other night about how in Kalamazoo, as humbly as he could put it, baseball wasn't really a challenge for him. He was by far the best and the competition wasn't competition at all (he didn't use those words because he's Derek fucking Jeter, but that was his point). Then when he got to the minors he felt like he couldn't even make contact.

I'd assume 90% of athletes if not more had the same growing pains, and this is excluding any remotely intriguing human interest angles (growing up the ghettos, being poor, losing a mentor at an early age, etc.). There's so much they can do with the literally thousands of pro athletes people care about... and they wanna do this? I mean, Jesus.
Seriously
Greg from LI : 5/16/2017 2:59 pm : link

Hardcore sports fans aren't watching this tripe. The bored housewife demographic who watches dreck like Live with Kelly or Ellen aren't leaving those shows for this. There isn't some massive Mike Greenberg fan base out there who will watch anything that involves Greenie babbling about his home life. So who is the target audience?
Fek
Greg from LI : 5/16/2017 3:03 pm : link
There are a million great stories. I've mentioned this one before, but Brett Gardner had to walk-on at College of Charleston. Not only that, he showed up for the team's first practice before even being told if he made the team or not. When the coach asked him what he was doing there, Gardner told him "I know I can play at this level"

But that takes some effort. Mike Greenberg yammering about groceries or whatever is easy.
Yeah, I'm really going to miss all those shows consisting of:
ErichBarnes102 : 5/16/2017 3:06 pm : link

Greenie reading a couple of on-air promos leading into:

A 6 minute string of recorded commercials 22 and 52 minutes after EVERY hour, followed by

Greenie reading a couple more on-air promos followed by:

Discussions on Greenie’s clothes, Golic’s eating habits, their wives and kids, etc

A freestanding commercial or 2 every 4-5 minutes

Whoever’s coming up on the Penzoil Performance Hotline!

Unending discussion of whatever the Social Media buzz of the day is

A mesmerizing 10 minute discussion on a subject like the fact that Greenie’s never made pancakes

15-20 mentions of whatever provider has “Best Network…..Half the cost”
Mike Greenberg isn't interesting, funny, or thoughtful enough

Amen, and that's one you happen to be privy to as a Yankees fan. I'm sure the Colts or the Orioles or the Coyotes have a half dozen stories just like it.

Oh, well.
I hate all ESPN nowadays but I'm thinking
aimrocky : 5/16/2017 3:53 pm : link
this format is similar to non football/opinion threads on BBI. Those threads tend to get more views than threads breaking down the intricacies of OL play. I personally click on them for a quick glance to see if anything interests me, if it doesn't I move along. The heavily detailed threads dedicate time and effort so I'm picky which topics will get read.

How this relates to Greeny's show? I'm assuming it's meant for a broad audience who want light sports coverage mixed with social observances/opinions to leave on in the background while they do whatever they do in the morning. Personally, I don't like in depth sports coverage in the morning. They're not popular, but I love Boomer and Carton for that reason. I get light sports coverage with a nice laugh to start the day.
Just cannot stand him & Carton

TyreeHelmet : 5/16/2017 5:35 pm : link
Do people really clamor for these bullshit talk shows? I'm sure Jemele Hill gets paid over a million to give her terrible uninformed opinions. And now they are building this around Greenberg? What a joke.

I missed the 2nd half of the Spurs/ Warriors game on saturday. I tried watching sunday night and monday morning sportscenters and barely saw any highlights. Why the refusal to actually show the games??!! If you watch SC6 you barely seen any actual sports. It's absurd.
Espn just continues to double down...
Italianju : 5/16/2017 5:48 pm : link
on the entertainment. Its crazy that they think they are going to get the casual viewer to tune in. At this point the company could at least get going in the right direction if they started to cater to, you know, actual sports fans again. Just get rid of all the gimmicky BS. Dont bring on some musician or actor to tell me who they think is going to win a game, what the hell do i care. Its so sad what ESPN has become and there is 0 chance they ever get back to a legit sports network. Once they start losing the live sports packages they currently have and cant afford, nobody will watch that channel.

arcarsenal : 5/16/2017 5:57 pm : link
It cannot be stated nearly enough just how much of a fucking abomination that SC6 truly is.

Absolutely awful.
Perhaps I'm in the minority, but I actually
eclipz928 : 5/16/2017 7:46 pm : link
like Mike Greenberg. Not so much his shtick when he's partnered with Golic, but that he actually has a very strong, well-rounded knowledge of all the major sports - which isn't something you can say for most other morning sports talk hosts.

I'm not a fan of the show Mike and Mike, but I think in a different venue people may appreciate Greenberg a little more. He uses up a lot of energy trying to carry Mike Golic, who is completely lost when he is not talking about football.

I'm actually much more nauseated by the other ESPN show that was proposed that will have Golic cohosting with Trey Wingo, who I think is currently the most obnoxious ESPN personality still with the company.
I remember Greenberg was on Live with Kelly,
smshmth8690 : 5/16/2017 10:43 pm : link
before Strahan got the gig. They were trying different people out after Regis retired. He looked lost in that setting.
I'd imagine much of the show will consist of
Mr. Bungle : 5/17/2017 10:42 am : link
Greenberg talking about how his wife "has made a cottage industry out of making fun of me on Twitter" (who cares?) and how his metrosexual tendencies make him scared of using power tools around the house.
