though I can't say I've ever heard her announce a game, but they couldn't do better than Rex? Isn't it bad enough they torture us with Gruden?
She's done college games for ESPN for a number of years. Not terrible, not great. Just hard to believe this duo rates an opening night game. Maybe they work cheap.
the only week with 2 MNF games though? So it's not that they "rate" well, it's that they are the B team. And ESPN (I'm sure NFL agreed/approved) probably felt having a woman in the booth might squeeze a little more out of the ratings.
have watched a bunch of her college games. Interesting pair, should be at the very least entertaining. Ryan might be the perfect color guy, considering he knows the game and will bring the personality.
She clearly knows the game, and her instincts seem solid.
But I simply prefer different. Meaning NOT a woman calling play-by-play. Whatever that makes me, so be it.
Besides. There are plenty of other great roles for women during football games. For example, getting in that kitchen and making me some sammiches! AMIRITE??? Link - ( New Window )
college commentator. Not great, but not worse than average Her calling the "B" MNF game isn't a big deal IMO, and a good move by ESPN to give a woman a chance to break the glass ceiling.
I actually don't listen to the Yankees on the radio anymore because she and Sterling are an unlistenable abomination.
Suzyn: "Wow! John did you see that? If I didn't see it I wouldn't believe it!"
Sterling: "Wella' how about that Suzyn?! I did see it! And it was magnificent! An unbelievable play. If I didn't see it with my own two eyes, I wouldn't believe. A Lincoln Mercury double play for the ages Suzyn."
Suzyn: "Check out your Tri-State Lincoln Mercury dealer for all the new cars and trucks they have to sell you."
Sterling: "Well, that's baseball Suzyn. You can't control where the ball goes and on that play it was a laser shot that you really had to see to even understand".
Suzyn: "John folks need to get their Tri State Lincoln Mercury dealer to see all the new cars and trucks for Yankee fans. It was a double play and a really amazing double play. I wouldn't believe that play unless I saw it with my own two eyes."
Sterling: "Amazing Suzyn. And that double play was brought to you by your Tri State Lincoln Mercury dealers. Get to your Tri State Lincoln Mercury dealer today to see all the new cars and trucks that Lincoln Mercury Tri State dealers have to offer. Linclon Mercury Tri State dealers have great cars and trucks!"
Suzyn: "John, the thing about that double play is that you really did have to see it"
Sterling: "Amzaing Suzyn. A double play for the ages!"
Suzyn: "Had to see John, to believe it".
Sterling: "Suzyn, you're absolutely right, it had to been seen. That double play brought to you by your Lincoln Mercury Tri State dealers. And now a word from our sponsors".
I don't know anything about Mowin, so I have no opinion,
positive or negative. But Rex Ryan seems fairly unappealing as an announcer. That said, if he can rein in his inner jackass, he's certainly knowledgeable.
because she will take a less pay in order to get her foot in the door. The network can claim to be a leader in woman's rights, but it is just a ploy to save money.
(I do not have any comparative salary data. I just assume that people are greedy.)
I'll say this, and I'll take the heat for saying it
guys don't announce softball games, yet women announce baseball, and now football. I really am all for gender equality, but this just doesn't make sense to me.

You act like the announcers are freestyling the sponsor reads or that they have any control over it at all.
You act like the announcers are freestyling the sponsor reads or that they have any control over it at all.
You're right, aside from cashing their checks they don't have much to do with the live reads. But what about Sterlings unchecked and ceaseless bloviating, his tired and meaningless cliches ("that's baseball" and "you can't tell the ball where to go") and his ridiculously facile rhymes "an a-bomb by a-rod" or "Georggie juiced one", "a tater by Tejada"? Suzyn was ok as a Yankees beat reporter on FAN (where I first remember noticing her). She was so close to The Boss, got some scoops and she did some good reporting. But her voice has always been grating and even after all these years she doesn't seem to grasp even the most fundamental aspects of radio play by play (hence my "did you see that?"). Ah, no Suzyn we didn't see that, it's radio. Together they have to be the most uniquely bad broadcasting team in all of sports. I used to listen to almost every Yanks game in the radio, now I seriously can't stand to listen to more than a few minutes. I'm far from the only person who's noted how awful these two are on the radio. About the only thing I can't understand is how they're allowed to continue, season after season, to ruin Yankees baseball on the radio.
but ESPN is trying too hard. Out-thinking themselves at every turn. Just provide sports programming and employ professionals that know the game. It's really not that complicated but it sure looks like ESPN has been trying to reinvent the wheel for the last 20 years or so. It's sports. You literally have to try to fuck up their world. And they have.

Yes, they have. They forgot that the game is what they are broadcasting and what got them where they are, not the International Night, not the split screen views of the booth and the night's "guest", not the human interest interview, all in the middle of the game, not sucking up screen real estate (especially with some cord cutters watching on laptops and phones) with bullshit.
On Suzyn and Sterling, I get to listen to a lot of the other teams' radio pairings through MLB at Bat. Suzyn and John are by far the worst. They are embarrassingly bad. If you want to listen to a Yankee game, select the other team's feed.

If you really all for gender equality, then I assume your only issue is that more opportunities aren't presented for men to call softball. (And of course, men already call many other women's sports).
I don't think I've ever watched or not watched a game...
I'd imagine you've found yourself away from women most of your life.

With Rex?
Might be even better with booth guest appearances by Broadway Joe.

That GIF must have been about a decade or so ago,
wonder if Sexy Rexy will bring camera along...

You've been chosen to the first woman to call an NFL game in 30 years.
What's the bad news?
You'll be teaming up with Rex Ryan.
I hope she does well, but boy the tone of their voices doing sports are tough
Golf I can handle
Baseball ouch
If I was smart enough to sync the radio and TV, I would.

You'd really pass on the chance to watch football just because a woman is calling the game?
