They have different exclusives and I can understand wanting to play with all of his friends online if they have a PS4 - but not enough to justify shelling out all the money for another system thats basically the same thing. Suck it up until the next gen consoles come out.
The only thing you HAVE to give your child (according to the law) is food, medical need, clothing and a clean safe home. You also are required to make sure they have access to basic education.
PS4 gets a lot of high quality exclusive games, XBox, not so much. I had always been an Xbox person in the past but this generation I went with the PlayStation and am loving it.
best games recently or soon to be released are exclusively available for the PS4, especially if you don't like first person shooters. Persona 5, Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted, the Last of Us (2), are all games that you can't play on the xBone.
like Bloodborne for PS4 and Halo series for Xbox. Xbox will have more freedom for modded games like Fallout 4 and Skyrim because of the way that Sony restricts using certain kinds of assets. But ultimately it depends on what his or her friends play.
but those reasons would be for the person paying for it. I wouldn't buy both for my kids but I'd have reasons to do so for myself (if that makes sense).
Teach your kids (and yourself) something and build a PC. Taught myself in college and now I'm passing it on to my kids once their old enough. 4 year old already likes to see all the parts on display. At 7&9 they'll eat it up.
Plus, on the gaming side, all games look better due to unlimited custimization. Also can get VR.

Sounds like whoever planted this seed in my son's head has suckers for parents.
So I would recommend giving the option to trade in the Xbox one for the PS4 but owning both is a huge waste
