A- Three years later SI re-grades the 2014 NFL draft

JimNY56 : 5/17/2017 8:42 am
Best: Beckham
2nd: Richburg

Of value: Bromley & Kennard
Miss --- Andre Williams 4rd, pick 113

A- is damn good but could have been better.
Who would you have picked instead of Williams at his spot.

Re-grading the 2014 NFL draft, three years later - ( New Window )
On May 28, 2014, EmDiggy listed 7 RBs he thought were better and

available. Storm Johnson, Wilder, Crowell and Cobb were included.
If my kid came

home with an A- I would be more than pleased.
the Jets...
UConn4523 : 5/17/2017 9:08 am : link
its amazing how horrendous their drafts have been.
Beckham has HOF potential
giants#1 : 5/17/2017 9:14 am : link
that alone sets the floor for the grade at an A- (IMO), especially with a top 5 (or even top 10) pick.
and I think an A- is way too low for that draft
giants#1 : 5/17/2017 9:26 am : link
If you get 3 starters + depth in a draft, you're ahead of the curve. If you get an All-Pro at a premium position (CB, WR, QB, DE, LT) and an average-to-above average starting OC, and a starting LB, and depth in a draft? You're hitting it out of the park. IMO, the only way to top that haul is grabbing a franchise QB.

That said, nobody comes close to Oakland in that draft:
Mack - All Pro DE
Carr - Franchise QB
Gabe Jackson - starting OG
Justin Ellis - starting DT in 2014, solid depth since then

No way the Giants draft
BurlyMan : 5/17/2017 9:40 am : link
is equal to the Packers. Giants get a solid A, Raiders A+
Hopefully will be the draft we point to
JonC : 5/17/2017 9:53 am : link
after another SB championship or two.

Fortune shined its light on us with OB, even NYG reportedly had a few players ahead of him on their board, including Mack at #1.

There is no Super Bowl Trophy for SI's draft grade. Who cares.

Good point, we shouldn't discuss any Giants related topics on a football message board unless they help the team get a SB trophy.

Let's remember this in the future when these knuckleheads dish out their meaningless grades after the draft.
Nice concept
trueblueinpw : 5/17/2017 1:25 pm : link
I always say around draft time that I wish we spent more time grading past drafts than the one we just had. Who the heck knows how this past draft will work out? Absolutely nobody. Grading a draft as it's happening or just after it happens is totally worthless speculation. But looking back three years ago, nice!
I loved the Richburg pick...
Klaatu : 5/17/2017 1:33 pm : link
But I was disappointed that we had to pass on Jace Amaro to draft him (and I hated that he went to the Jets). Still, there was no question in my mind that drafting Richburg was the right call.

As for OBJ...honestly, I was in the Aaron Donald camp.
Beckham is a generational player
Mike from SI : 5/17/2017 1:36 pm : link
and the Giants went out on a limb to pick him considering we needed OL help, could have used Aaron Donald, at the time we thought we were ok at receiver with Nixcks and Cruz, and nobody thought he would be even close to this good. Add in Richburg and the rest and we should get an A or A+ (and the Raiders should get A + infinity).

I thought OBJ would be good, but had absolutely no idea he'd be this good. That year, when it came to WRs, I was all about Donte Moncrief and Cody Latimer.

I think it's more interesting to redraft round 1

Carr has to be top 5. Pro bowl QB is a rare comment

Beckham seems to get defined by some only by nitpicking astonishingly benign things like interacting with a kicking net.

We are legitimately watching a young player three years into hall of fame career trajectory and still find things to criticize.

I recall spending most of my pre-draft time supporting Evans and/or Martin.

Oh...and trying to keep the Aaron Donald Fan Club from creating 50 different threads a day on their guy...
I give us a A- or at worst a B+ for 2014
SGMen : 5/17/2017 7:50 pm : link
What a shame RB A. Williams sucked so bad and couldn't play specials. I really thought he'd at least be a big, powerful short yardage, change of pace back but he outright could not run unless there was a giant hole.

I think Richburg could see a probowl in his career. Kennard has been hurt some but he can certainly play. Overall, with future HOF WR OBJ, how can you go lower than A- ?

I think our 2016 draft will also end up being super solid as well. No HOF type maybe but solid overall, especially because of the UDFA additions like FS Adams.

2015 improves if both Flowers and Hart develop into solid starters. They are both a long way from there but there is some hope as they are both young (23); were raw coming out of college; and, worked hard this off-season, year #2 of coach Solari. They can't be any worse than last year's tandem, right?

I wanted Martin. Funny. All 3 would have been great picks. Think of the 3 I'd still take OBJ or Martin over Donald. I think OBJ is going to keep getting better and w Engram and Marshall he will eat the coverages he's going to eat the coverages he will see alive

I loved DT A. Donald as an interior pass rusher. He is better than I ever thought he'd be but so is OBJ. Without OBJ last year, this offense would have been among the league's 3 worst - he does an offense that much good.

If we had DT Donald this year, well, we'd have the league's best defense. No top 5, the best. Who do you double? How do you stop four guys who are all studs? You can't.
