NFT: Advice needed: Planning a 12-14 day trip to Arizona

TommytheElephant : 5/17/2017 11:55 am
In September - I don't think Vegas or California will be in the cards this time and we are just relaxing in Arizona.
I know there a lot of BBIs finest (ex Bruce) in Arizona so landing at sky harbor and departing from sky harbor - ideas are welcome.
I was there a few years back for Giants game and was in Tempe , Scottsdale, Grand Canyon etc and loved it all .
I just spent spring break in the four corners area

and there's so much to see. Monument Valley, Chaco Canyon, Mesa Verde, Canyon de Chelly, the Shiprock Pinnacle, and on and on.

My favorite hotel in AZ is Wild Horse Pass in Chandler (south of PHX), where the Giants stayed the year they won the Super Bowl in AZ.
I'll actually be there for the season opener

I'll have to find a spot

we went for a week and a half.....was a great trip.

Started in Sedona with hiking. Great area.

Then to Grand Canyon. We hiked down, stayed at Phantom Ranch for two nights, and hiked back up. Stayed in the park overall about four days. Just driving thru and going to the lookouts is well worth it IMO.

Then Monument Valley. Just one hotel there......but worth staying over night.

Then finished in Scottsdale at a great hotel, the Valley Ho.

Enjoy!!!!
Keep in mind September will still be very hot
nygfaninorlando : 5/17/2017 1:16 pm : link
Probably looking at 105-110 degrees in early September. I've lived in Scottsdale the last 10+ years and September is the worst month for the heat. Still plenty of things to do and sights to see. I'm sure you will have a great time. Obviously lots of hiking and golf options. Great restaurants all over town. Let me know if you need recommendations. Diamondbacks will still be playing if you want to take in a ball game. A day trip to Sedona or Flagstaff is always great. Beautiful scenery. Top Golf has opened a couple locations out here and that's a fun night out. Casinos are open all over the place as well if you like to gamble and or see a show.
If you want to go south for a few days,

there's Pima Air Museum in Tucson, and farther out is Karchner Caverns (pretty impressive and might need reservations in advance) and Tombstone, relatively close to the caverns.
Slide Rock State Park

Is a must if you're in Sedona along with the drive on Route 89A into Sedona.
Right . That's why the long hikes are probably out of the question
TommytheElephant : 5/17/2017 1:26 pm : link
Looking towards resorts mostly
Thanks for all of the help
If you're looking to just stay at a resort

I'd recommend you stay in Sedona... much more relaxing and beautiful than Phoenix/Tempe, though a bit of a drive (2 hours north).

Either way, I do recommend you make a trip down to Tucson (its about 90 minutes south of Phoenix) for some of the best Mexican food you'll ever eat in your life. Lots of options:

- El Charro
- Rosa's
- Cafe Poca Cosa
- La Parilla Suiza
Resorts are plentiful in Scottsdale
nygfaninorlando : 5/17/2017 1:44 pm : link
And Phoenix area. Can't go wrong with any of the following:

Four Seasons
Fairmont Scottsdale Princess
JW Marriott Desert Ridge
JW Marriott Camelback Inn
The Boulders
The Phoenician
Royal Palms
Hyatt Gainey Ranch

All of the above have good pools, spas, restaurants and plenty to do nearby. Rates should still be decent until late September but you should pick one and book sooner rather than later.
go to Page Arizona and do the Hummer Canyon Tour
BigBlue2112 : 5/17/2017 1:58 pm : link
Unreal. Antelope Canyon is way too crowded with foreign tourists that you cannot appreciate its beauty. These hummer tours take about 5 people to a private canyon on native land. Unbelievable experience.

Also I cannot recommend the big 5 National parks in Utah enough while you're (possibly) in northern Arizona. Zion especially. Hike the Narrows. Top 5 experience in my life.
You guys rock! Please keep the advice coming

also - where is the best place to catch a giant game?
I am mostly concerned about this but it is an away game so I feel better about going away. I will sit in my hotel room if the place is infused with Dallas fans.
I was there a couple of weeks ago.

We had a party to go to outside of Phoenix, then drove up to Sedona for a few days, then to the Grand Canyon. Sedona is surrounded by beautiful scenery, but I have to say I was underwhelmed by the town itself. No charm at all. Still worth a trip to view the scenery and take a few hikes, or better yet, rent a Razor buggy for a day.

Grand Canyon is a must, although the town has little going on. But the canyon is amazing in person, go down the Angel Trail, and stop in the lodge for a drink.

Absolutely yes to Slide Rock. I was just there last month, and that natural water slide was great, even though it felt like freshly melted ice. It should be much warmer in September, but probably super-crowded.
Heard Museum
Adam G in Big D : 5/17/2017 10:34 pm : link
Phoenix Museum
Opera
Theaters downtown that have plays and shows.
Grand Canyon
Meteorite Crater in Winslow
Painted Desert and Petrified Forest
Tonto National Forest/Payson, AZ
Joshua Tree Forest (2 of them)
Gambling (Talking Stick is my preference)
If you like to drink...
hitchchops2 : 5/17/2017 11:34 pm : link
...there are a ton of good spots...AZ Wilderness is a must, Angel's Trumpet is good, McFate's Taphouse is good...there is also a meetup for Giant fans to watch together every Sunday, so that's an option.

Valley Ho sounds like a great place. Don't know if I would want to take my wife, though
I would like the 2nd the Utah National Parks!

Zion and Bryce Canyon were both some of my favorites. The narrows trail which is already mentioned is really great in Zion. Also, the hoodoos at Bryce Canyon are just awesome. Enjoy your time!
