NFT: Yanks propects updates

Greg from LI : 5/17/2017 12:07 pm
Gleyber is heating up - .287/.374/.475, 8 doubles, 1 triple, 3 homers. Always keep in mind, too, that Trenton is a notorious pitcher's park.

Clint Frazier - .243/.331/.450, 12 doubles, 5 homers. Has cooled off a bit after his recent hot streak. Bit of a bad luck victim (.268 BAbip) but hitting the ball on the ground too much, too.

The rest of the Scranton outfield is absolutely killing it. Dustin Fowler is hitting .299/.348/.551 with 8 doubles 7(!) triples and 5 homers, Mark Payton .346/.404/.506 with 7 doubles and 2 homers.

No one considers him much of a real prospect, but Mike Ford hit the ground running in Scranton to the tune of 5-13 with two doubles and a homer in his first 3 games.

A lot of people were talking up Billy McKinney after spring training, but he's been awful. Like .158/.288/.286 awful. Thairo Estrada, on the other hand, has shined: .330/.419/.440, 6 doubles, 2 homers, and more walks (14) than Ks (13).

Mateo is finally picking it up. Still hitting only .248/.290/.379 overall but .364 over his last six games, and his success on the bases has returned. Fifteen steals in seventeen attempts.

After a horrendous start, Nick Solak has turned it on. Up to .277/.410/.384 with 7 doubles, 1 triple and a homer.

Blake Rutherford continues to impress. Just turned 20 and is sitting at .289/.372/.430 in Charleston. 11 doubles, 2 triples, one homer.

And those are just some of the hitters. I don't even have time to hit up all the pitchers!
you forgot Wade

Not much power, but hitting .319/.394/.447 in SWB and 12-15 in SBs. Not really a place for him with Didi in front of him and Torres behind, but could be valuable in a trade.

Good stuff
GuzzaBlue : 5/17/2017 12:16 pm : link
Exciting times with all the young talent. Torres is going to be an on-base machine. Seems to have a good eye along with the bat. Would love to see another young starter emerge. Adams looks good.
Sheffield has looked good in Trenton too
giants#1 : 5/17/2017 12:17 pm : link
and Yeffrey Ramirez has some impressive numbers in Tampa.

Wade has been the Yankees best performing prospect in 2017 at SWB. He has 28 Runs scored in 34 games and has an OBP close to 400. The kid plays all over the field, but SS is still his best natural position. Wade is a STUD.
um, no he hasn't
Greg from LI : 5/17/2017 12:21 pm : link
Dustin Fowler has. Wade has nice numbers, Fowler has fantastic numbers.
Our system is so stacked
bceagle05 : 5/17/2017 12:23 pm : link
we have the luxury of developing Wade as a jack of all trades. He'll be our Ben Zobrist.

As for Gleyber, I thought it was great that YES showed his homer during the Yankees/Royals broadcast. YES is all in the prospects - they even have a little docu-series airing about them.

Wade has also played every position in the field except pitcher, 1B, and catcher. He's putting the super in super utility player.
Fowler

working his way into the ML picture, very impressive. Still only 22 as well. Could be the CF we've been looking for
What is wrong with Mateo
superspynyg : 5/17/2017 1:22 pm : link
He is struggling in Tampa. He has been in the Yanks system for a while now and doesn't look close to being promoted. He is batting .248 with an obp of .290. I know he has steller speed but if you cant get on base then your speed doesn't really help you.

He has been with the Yanks since 2012. I know he is only 22 but when does he get it?
I know we can't make a big deal about spring training,
shockeyisthebest8056 : 5/17/2017 1:24 pm : link
but I'm shocked McKinney has struggled this much. He looked GREAT during the spring.

Part of it is that they are transitioning him to CF this year so his focus has probably been on that. He has been hitting better lately (.350+ over his last 10 games). Was hitting ~.214 less than 2 weeks ago.

And part of it is that not all prospects with physical tools actually live up to them. I'm pulling for the kid but he has been lapped by a few others in the system. I worry we will sell low on him.
Who is Mark
Jay in Toronto : 5/17/2017 3:10 pm : link
Payton?? He certainly hasn't been part of the early hype.

7th round pick back in 2014 out of Texas. He's 25 so an older prospect who probably projects to be more of a 4th OF. His 'ceiling' is probably a Gardner type, though he's not nearly the same threat on the bases.

I remember Sanchez early on in his career didn't develop right away and had issues and all of a sudden it clicked. Hopefully it will click with Mateo at some point and when he does he is still with the Yanks.
Mateo got off to a slow start
Greg from LI : 5/17/2017 3:37 pm : link
But people are writing him off too quickly. He's hit much better in the last two weeks.

Payton is just an organizational guy. He has no ML upside- except as maybe a guy who gets a cup of coffee or two because someone got hurt. He's veteran filler.
Tetsuto Yamada
DanMetroMan : 5/17/2017 4:51 pm : link
has really struggled early on. He was a guy the Yankees were supposedly eyeballing (among a bunch of teams). He still has a ridiculous 24/23 BB/K so I suspect his poor start is mostly BABIP (I don't even know where Japanese BABIP can be found nor do I really care lol)
Payton doesn't have a Yankee future
Greg from LI : 5/17/2017 4:55 pm : link
But he could be a 4th OF for someone.

.346/.404/.506 with 7 doubles and 2 homers is a pretty good slash line for somebody that is AAA or AAAA at best.

What does a AAA player make per season to be able to play year after year and still get nowhere?
Hal on the chances of trading prospects...

When it comes to the Yankee youth movement and blooming Baby Bombers, owner Hal Steinbrenner is all in -- as in, other teams can drool over the Yankees' farm system all they want, but Steinbrenner isn't prepared to trade his blue chip prospects or young stars any time soon.

"I think we've been pretty consistent about not trading away the young talent the last three to four years. I think in part that consistency has paid off in several areas. So that's not something I'm looking to do, is trade away all of our top prospects," said Steinbrenner, who attended the MLB owners meetings in Manhattan Wednesday. "When you look at the young talent that we got (last summer), those deals were tough to turn down. Got some good young players."
