NFT: Mets - D'backs Matinee

Rob in Rockaway : 5/17/2017 4:25 pm
Used to be that any Harvey start was Harvey Day! Now there isn't even a thread.

Conforto HR drives in Reyes gives Mets 2-0 lead top 1. Harvey then gives up a leadoff triple and then throws almost 30 pitches but finally gets out of the 1st. 2-1 Mets.

Reyes make a horrendous baserunning mistake to end the top of the 2nd costing the Mets a chance to have Conforto bat with runners on 1st and 3rd.

The only way he is going to learn is to play against them.

They need to humble Gsellman

with the roof open. Off the bat I thought Conforto's HR was an out and I thought the same for Lamb's. It works both ways and evens out but I give Harvey a semi pass for the Lamb HR. He did a good job limiting the damage. Baby steps...
Montero - oh boy

LOL, this team sucks.

Disaster of a season.
Gsellman definitely
allstarjim : 5/17/2017 7:22 pm : link
needs to go down. I actually think the bullpen can recover. But Gsellman and Montero can't be major role players in a successful pen.
the real problem going forward
Vanzetti : 5/17/2017 7:22 pm : link
is that without DePo at his side, Sandy Alderson is proving to be a very poor GM

I'd let both Sandy and COllins go at the end of the season.

Let them both retire.

Collins is very likely gone. In fairness, Sandy deserves and will certainly get another chance with a new coach but some of his moves the last two seasons were really poor
Sandy is turning 70 this November

Biggest problem right now
allstarjim : 5/17/2017 11:59 pm : link
Is Collins. He needs to let his starters try to work through trouble in the 6th and 7th, and give the bullpen less outs to get. The team feels snakebit. But Cespedes is returning soon, and in a month from now, my hope is Amed Rosario will be the every day SS.

Hopefully, by mid-July, we'll see Rosario, TJ Rivera, Conforto, and Cespedes 1-4 in the lineup. I think Sandy needs to try and deal Walker for a reliever. He's a good player, don't need a stud closer for him, just a good reliever that can get outs and bridge to the 8th.

And Matz and Lugo can't get back fast enough.

The problem is that he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

If he lets his starters try to keep going and work through 6th and 7th innings and one of these two things happen...

1) The starter gets lit up and a game gets out of reach

or...

2) The starter winds up injured because he's out of gas and Collins leaves him on the mound

Then Collins gets killed anyway. The narrative then changes to:

"How doesn't he see that his starter doesn't have it?! He needed to take him out 'x' batters ago!"

The majority of the pitchers flat out suck right now. That's on them. They need to be better. We're already missing our best starter and best reliever and the starters continue to tax the shit out of the bullpen, rendering even the better guys we have back there much less effective.

I'm not sure there are many managerial solutions here.

It's a no-win situation.

What would be really great would be if maybe some of these guys could just give us 6 quality fucking innings like other good pitchers in this league do.
the BP is garbage other than Blevins and Reed
Eric on Li : 5/18/2017 12:29 am : link
And it will be even worse when their arms fall off. There's a reason Robles has never been trusted in big spots. A reason Salas was dumped last year. A reason Montero has never stuck. And on and on. Collins tried something new with Gsellman, we know how that worked out. Managers are always an easy target, this is a team built around excellent starting pitching, a top tier closer, and Cespedes. Don't think we can blame those 3 shortcomings on Collins.
Why are those the only two options for the outcomes with
PhiPsi125 : 5/18/2017 12:55 am : link
the Mets pitchers? Maybe number three could be:

3) pitcher goes out for an extra inning and gives the team another inning?

But no, every time Terry let's a pitcher go out for that extra inning he immediately pulls them if they give up a hit. Pitchers give up hits...let them work out of it. Some will and some won't, but you just can't have your starters only pitching 5 innings all the time. And we already know the BP will just blow the game anyway.

Listen, Terry sucks and nobody will ever convince me otherwise but he's also been given a raw deal with injuries. However, he was never leading this club to any type of success. Reality is that the ONLY reason he's still here is because the veteran players like him and the ONLY reason they like him is because Terry never holds them accountable and keeps playing them even when they suck. I've seen enough lack of fundamentals and lazy play to confirm this. Like, why the fuck is Granderson still playing so much?

In today's game, much like in the history of baseball, you need to create offense. And Terry literally HATES plays that create offense. Hit and run, going first to third, stealing bases, squeeze plays, etc. Terry is the living embodiment of an anchor that is dragging this team down and gets the least out of his players. Hell, he even publicly took the blame for Wilmers struggles against righties because he refused to play him against righties even though he used to be effective against them.

I know a lot of people will disagree with me on this, which is fine. I respect your point on this also. Of course, I could be dead wrong but this is how I feel based on years of watching this dolt.
The Mets problem is their STARTERS. I don't care who you have in the
Victor in CT : 5/18/2017 9:26 am : link
pen, when you have to go them in the 5th inning or sooner 8 out of 10 games, your pen is going to get exposed. No length from anybody, no quality due to injuries,.

Why would we expect anything out of Matz at this point, other than his complaining about arm pain? I think Lugo has shown he will pitch through pain (and MLB, stop playing the WBC in the fucking preseason!), but I don't trust Matz to get through a season.
