NFT: LaVar Ball wants $3B for shoe deal

AnishPatel : 5/17/2017 7:02 pm
Is this guy off his rocker?! No company will pay 3 billion dollars for his damn brand! The initial asking price to make a deal with he first pitched his idea to the companies was 1 billion dollars!

Not defending him by any means, but Lavar might've found out beforehand that Leahy said that Lavar essentially abuses his kids.
He should insist upon total ownership

I just saw that, that was awful. I do my best to separate Lonzo from his dad, but this asshole just keeps making that more difficult to do. I live right by Staples, if I ever see Lavar, oh yeah, I will heckle him to get a reaction out of him.

that Lonzo comes off as a Joe Jackson wannabe with his heavy involvement with his kids future earnings and fortunes. There was an interview where he said pretty defiantly thta his children would never stand up to him, because they wouldn't be his kids anymore. He's a piece of shit that even undermined his son's coaches.

That's a bizarre way of describing that interview.

Leahy has trashed him in the media. She essentially said he mistreats his kids. His reaction was to her opinions, not to her gender.

He did mention that he has no interest in selling women's shoes. I don't think that's sexist either.

You should check the interview I referenced. He was so fucking smug about how his kids wouldn't ever dare challenge him. You can't act like Joe Jackson in public and then get butthurt when people even make that implication about you. The Ball's actually reminds me of those coach's sons that are not only forced to play the sport, but also put in insane hours at their craft, and never really allowed to have a personality of their own.

It almost like Lonzo has some form of PTSD. Watched him all year and he seemed to fade into the background a lot and not assert himself. That's bad for a PG.
It doesn't justify his behavior,

I didn't say he isn't abusive to his kids. It's evident that at the least he's leeching off of their success, so if he turns out to be an abusive piece of shit, I wouldn't be surprised. I also wouldn't be surprised if it turns out he also has skewed idea of gender and gender roles.

But, on Cowherd's show today - which is what I assumed was the reference, he didn't go off on a sexist rant. I don't like throwing out words like "sexist" flippantly; just because the speakers are a man and a woman, it doesn't make any speech act an act of sexism. It was a put down based on their personal history. And it's his prerogative to defend himself if he feels personally attacked. Just because he's an asshole, he's not automatically also a male chauvinist, and I saw the show and didn't view their exchange that way.

Yes. But, I don't think that was an instance of that. He was dismissive due to prior events (her calling him a bad parent and making jokes about how his family must live in fear of him), not due to the fact that she was a woman or that she has no place in a conversation about sports because of her gender.

I'm only talking about that singular exchange as it being used as evidence of sexism, not of the claim itself.
I really think the Lakers should stay away
Kyle in NY : 5/17/2017 8:44 pm : link
There are enough weaknesses in his game to make him not a sure thing, then add the Dad to the mix and it's a headache for management and the coaching staff. Plus guys are going to go after him constantly, trying to show him up. And his defense isn't exactly his forte in the first place.

Just seems like a mess that they should avoid. And there are other guys worthy of that pick. It's a deep draft.

He needs to crawl under a rock and stay there. I blame the press in this country for allowing such jerks to have a voice. The only way he should think about getting a pair of sneakers is to buy them in a store.
I'll take the contrarian stance on this
tbonfig : 5/17/2017 9:45 pm : link
while caveating that I think the father is over the top, I love the concept of them coming out with their own brand and finding a way to profit off of their own brand instead of letting a corporation make money off of them (same way NCAA pimps out athletes in all sports).

If they can make money doing it, why not. Asking $3B is not a serious request, it is a statement against the concept of letting a multibillion dollar corporation make tens of millions (or more) while the one actually doing the work to earn that reputation makes far less.

Those who listen to Dan Le Batard have heard his stance on this and I happen to agree.

I also think this guy is hilarious.

On the Dan Le Batard show they had a business media person on saying in the 24 hours of him announcing the shoe deal for $500, all of the sports shows talking about him, and every other media outlet, gave them $50M in free advertising!

and if I'm the Lakers, I'd have significant reservations about taking Lonzo. His father is an albatross, but I have some serious reservations about his game. He is an other-worldly passer with great vision, but how is he going to create his own shot in the NBA? And I know it is only one game, but his no-show v. Fox and Kentucky was very concerning. It wasn't simply that he played poorly, but halfway through the first half, he was passing the ball off as soon as he crossed halfcourt. It was like he wanted nothing to do with Fox.

That, and the fact that he was so casual and declaring for the NBA draft only minutes after what should have been a devastating NCAA loss. Look at how Fox was after Kentucky lost to UNC, he was inconsolable. Not saying that Lonzo had to be that upset, but a little disappointment would have been nice.

I disagree. At this point I think most Knicks fans would love that deal. Half of them thing Melo is a net negative and the other half want to see a 'real' rebuild. What better way to accomplish the latter then getting Fultz/Ball to pair with KP/Willy. And if (more like when) they struggle in 2017/18, they'll get another high pick next year to add to the mix.

Advertising and publicity aren't just about immediate sales. He's building hype around the brand and if he (the son) hits the ground running, you'll likely see more sales down the line thanks to the free publicity.

Agree 10000%. This is a huge part of what's wrong with society. Stupid shitheads like Lavar Ball, Kanye West, the Kardashians... all contribute nothing to society and yet the news will report on every move they make...and what's worse, they have followers who eat their shit up. And he's legitimately looney. He's mentally ill and his so-called "fans" are enablers to his lunacy. If they gave two shits about him, they would ignore his incoherent ramblings and pay them no mind. But at this point, they're essentially laughing at his grandiosity.

I've never so much as raised my voice at neither of my parents... mainly because I ain't stupid. My dad's a bit smaller than me... and deep down I think I could probably take him... but he's the only man on this planet that I'm scared of... and there's no close second. My biological mom... who's passed some years ago... I was even more afraid of. I'd probably test my pops before her. When I was probably about 5 or 6 I once saw her tell a lady at the doctor's office that was sitting behind a desk and a glass plate that she'll reach through that glass and beat the shit out of her if they didn't take me in the back to see me. Needless to say, I was pretty much immediately taken to the back. Mom's was no joke.

That said, my father never acted like a jackass like this one does. So it's possible I might've gotten into it with him over this. I honestly don't know.

"He's also an example that no matter how shitty a person comes off, they will have some supporters. Why? I have no fucking clue."

There's actually one other guy I can think of who I've had this EXACT same thought about... it's mind-boggling really.

“Kyrie, he’s in a different situation. So you can’t put yourself in the same situation as Lonzo,” Ball said. “I have a wife and two other sons. You not in that situation, his was different. Now, he couldn’t wait to break away from his dad. Why? Because you guys was needy back then. My boy’s not needy, he does whatever he wants. Just like I do whatever I want.

“So you can’t put yourself in that situation and say, ‘Oh, from my experience.’ Maybe he didn’t have the relationship that me and ‘Zo got. I don’t think he did. First of all, your mom wasn’t there. Something’s got to change right there, it’s not the same.

“Lonzo can come home and see his mom and dad all the time. Most people, with his talent, usually has a single parent. Not two of them together and be involved.”

It should be noted that Kyrie's mother died when he was 4.

Ouch.

Kyrie has a right to punch him in the mouth when he sees him.
By the way...

This poor kid is going to end up on countless posters, because of his windbag father.

His moron father gets what they deserve. If the Lakers actually draft this kid they should have their team franchise revoked. I would not draft him and then have every other team not draft him either. Let him go to Europe

is one of the best things to happen to sports media.

ESPN, Colin Cowheard, Fox, Screamin A Smith and all the blithering idiot bloggers can't get enough of him. He's more famous than more than half the NBA.

Every sports station wants a tool to talk about, Ball is the NBA's. People are not thinking he is right they are talking about him as a blithering idiot.

I know it's tough, but you have to separate the kid from the father. I think Lonzo is a good kid, who happens to have an overbearing father. Once he gets his ink, gets to know NBA culture, I think you'll see him start to get a backbone. He'd be an awesome fit in Philly with Embiid, and Simmons.

Melo and Knicks #8 to Celtics for the #1. Knicks then draft Ball #1.

While what's left of the Knicks fans heads explode, you hear muttering from the secret lair under MSG:

Come to ME, Lavar! Let us make beautiful douchebaggery together!

I love this picture. He's trying to be a cool musician, playing the guitar and singin the blues. On the road, trying to make a living with his band - singing about women, love, heartbreak and tough times.

Meanwhile, swinging from his wrist is a $30,000 Rolex.

What a dickbag.

You mean Lonzo
At some point, the son is going to have to dump the father.
