His velocity is slow, slower, slowest. No surprise Gardy and Castro were the ones to patiently take him the other way...Judge didn't look good against his changeup

In a close game. Was there conclusive evidence that he didn't whiff on the tag? If he tagged him, it beat the foot hitting home, but I'm not 100% sure there was a tag.

No big deal. Freight train rolls on.
Detroit needs to come through for us
Greg from LI : 5/17/2017 9:56 pm : link
After letting us down last night. So sick of the Orioles hanging around by eking out a bunch of close games.
I think the tag was pretty clear
Greg from LI : 5/17/2017 9:58 pm : link
Between the two angles, looked conclusive to me.
As slow as Carter is,
section125 : 5/17/2017 9:58 pm : link
he was safe if he was either on the dugout side of the line or he keeps his foot extended - not a good slide. But still a perfect throw to get him. And he did hustle on the grounder to prevent the DP.

Sanchez is poison - keeps getting runners thrown out at home.

No problem with Pineda attacking the strike zone with every pitch with the huge lead. Pineda's job is to get outs as quickly as possible and a solo HR won't change much
Toronto getting hammered by Atlanta
Greg from LI : 5/17/2017 10:11 pm : link
Man, I love that. They're just as big assholes as ever, too - Jason Motte struck out Kevin Pillar, and Pillar starting screaming at him for jogging off the mound before the ump made the call.

Love seeing them suck.

Sure. But this is also where he's been hit in other situations this year. I was referring more to his body of work this season than just tonight.

Clearly he's miles better than he was last year. Progress

wonder if Hicks gets another start.
they are MASHING it! And the hardest hit ball of the game was
Victor in CT : 5/18/2017 9:19 am : link
an out. The Sanchez SCREAMING liner in the 1st that Cain made a great play on was crushed.

Castro can flat out hit. And he's getting better at 2b. I can live with his occasional brain fart.

I could live with Headley being a weak bat if he wasn't such a shitty 3b. Keep a good though: he's only keeping the seat warm for Torres.

Hicks starting for Gardy in left tonight

the weird thing is, Headley used to be a great 3b

He was considered more a of glove-first guy before he had that one career year at the plate for the Pads.

Right now Ellsbury should be the 4th OF with Hicks full time in CF or LF. Gardner, Hicks, Judge - left to right - is a very strong defensive OF. Gardy with the weakest arm that is still very accurate with sufficient strength. Better hitting threesome too.

Maybe it is time to start Torryes - or give him equal time. Could go two days at 3rd, one at SS and one at 2B. He is a decent (if not plus) fielder and he handles the bat well too. Right now in a clutch situation, I'd rather see Torreyes at the plate than Headley (unless a HR is needed).

Agree 100%. He's simply a far better player than Ellsbury right now. The only reason Ellsbury will continue to start over him is his fucking contract. Hicks has absolutely earned the right to be an every day player at this point - if he starts to slump you can re-evalutate, but right now the guy needs to be in the lineup every day.

My memory is Headley was very good in the field his first season with the Yanks too. There was rumor he was playing with a shoulder injury last year that fucked with his throwing...but he's been a debacle catching the ball as well as throwing it for a while now

He seems like a nice enough guy, but we're all counting down to the start of the Torres era at this point

Any chance of

Either Ells or Hicks starting to take some grounders at 1B?

Hopefully a moot point with Bird close to back (and hopefully hittigng), but having the flexibility to get those 4 OF bats in the lineup without benching Holliday would be nice.
Well, just to give Headley
section125 : 5/18/2017 10:02 am : link
a break from last night's double error - he clearly lost the ball in the lights and made a hurried throw. Should have eaten the bobble. You can excuse the bobble because of losing it in the lights, but the throw is non excusable.

Kay said Hicks took grounders before the 1st game. Never played a game at 1st base ever at any level from Little League on up. Very uncomfortable there.
Ells is too short.

Carter appears to be warming up at the plate.

agree
It's a de facto 4-man outfield rotation as it is -
Del Shofner : 5/18/2017 12:12 pm : link
with tonight's game, you'll have (in games played):

Judge 36
Gardy 34
Ells 32
Hicks 30
Hicks has essentially played as well as Mike Trout this season....
Tesla : 5/18/2017 12:17 pm : link
He has the 6th highest WRC+ in MLB.

He likely won't keep this up, but while he does he sure as hell needs to be in the lineup everyday.
Hicks has played
PaulBlakeTSU : 5/18/2017 12:24 pm : link
very well, but it's quite hyperbolic to say he has played as well as Trout. That puts way too much emphasis on an unstable defensive rating through 35 games.
does it always have to get ridiculous?
Victor in CT : 5/18/2017 12:34 pm : link
Hicks vs. Trout is like comparing hash to porterhouse steak. I like Hicks as a player, but please.

I hope we don't blow up the future by moving guys like Frazier/Mateo/Rutherford in July.

Hicks and Castro - what can you say? Did anyone outside the organization believe either would be able to perform at this level for more than a hot-streak?

Don't break up what is working. Rotate the OFers based on whatever model Joe is using. Don't kill the golden goose by getting greedy.
HIcks
PaulBlakeTSU : 5/18/2017 12:53 pm : link
has been one of the best offensive players in the league thus far. He is 13th in all of baseball in wRC+ (a better version of OPS+).

However, it's worth noting that his rate stats are skewed by his splits in which he faces a higher proportion of lefties than everyday starters which inflates his rate stats. For example, 37% of his plate appearances have been against lefties.

For comparison, the Yankees leader in PAs, Castro, has only had 25% of his plate appearances against lefties.

This is smart of Girardi, but it shows how his rate stats are inflated due to not being an everyday player.

Yet, even with fewer plate appearances, about 2/3rds of the league stars (Castro most on Yankees wit h163), Hicks has still managed to rank 10th in offensive total contribution which is a counting stat (includes SBs and baserunning). That said, there is a notable drop-off between 10th and guys like Trout atop the list.

....
Tesla : 5/18/2017 12:56 pm : link
Trout: .341/.451/742
Hicks: .326/.464/.616

Not as good as Trout but not that far off. Both excellent in CF and great speed on the bases.

I don't predict Hicks will keep it up but that's what he's done so far this season.
worth noting
PaulBlakeTSU : 5/18/2017 12:58 pm : link
and I'm surprised to see this, he has performed notably better against righties than lefties this season.

If anything, the inflated number of lefties he faced would thus be deflating his current rate stats.

Doesn't make sense other than the product of a small sample size.

But I hope he can at least maintain better productivity going forward than he typically has shown in his career.

On top of the young talent, his deals are looking absolutely golden right now. He turned JR Murphy, Brendan Ryan, and Shane Greene into Hicks, Castro, and Gregorius (Adam Warren of course went to Chicago for Castro and returned for Chapman).

Good point, and while we all mocked him last season for standing by Hicks' ability last season (myself included), he's proving him right this season
Cashman's on fire right now.
