in horror movies that don't make sense. I've gotten so used to it I hardly notice it any more. The thing is, is the movie scary? If so, then it did its job and is worthy plunking down a few bucks to see it.
I saw it last night as well. So much better than Prometheus
I know I'm in the minority, but I loved Prometheus, and I would have liked to have seen what Ridley Scott had in mind going forward in regards to the mythology.
From Prometheus storyline? Or did totally deviate??
Both movies have David in it. The newer model is out as Walter and Fastbender plays both Walter and David.
Apparently you should watch these trailers which link into the movie, or else you might be lost. Everything You Need to See Before Watching 'Alien: Covenant - ( New Window )
From Prometheus storyline? Or did totally deviate??
You find out what happened with Shaw and David after Prometheus. There are a lot of emphasis on the creator/created relationship, but if you wanted to know why the engineers created us, you won't get your answer. If you wanted to know why the engineers intended to destroy us, you get an idea.
Very good I thought. There is a scene when David teaches Walter to play the flute (with an intentionally hilarious line) that's pretty surreal.

Yeah there's a brief shot that telegraphs it that they really didn't need to put in. Would have worked just as well otherwise. Also a lot of the deaths are given away in the trailers but I guess that's not really the point. Obviously people are going to die in an Alien movie.
I really liked Prometheus, but can see why it frustrated others. I liked the mythology element of it, and I think this film does a good job of taking elements of that and combining it with a more straightforward action film that fans of the originals would appreciate. And like I said, Fassbender kills it. Looking forward to what comes next

This link is great. You should watch it before you go although you will probably figure it out anyhow, like me. Lol
I couldn't believe two hours went that fast. So now we know......
Should I say?
Give people some time to see it before putting spoilers here
I agree. No spoilers from me. But if anyone liked Prometheus you should like this one too. Honestly, I like Prometheus a wee bit more because I liked the Engineers aspect, but this one fills in some blanks. Can't wait for the next one.

I preferred Prometheus by a large margin. I enjoyed Covenant but felt it was not packaged as cleanly as I was hoping. I also hated the "lead" female character.
to the soulless mayhem of the AvP movies. Covenant is a hybrid of the two, and for that reason I didn't enjoy it quite as much as I did Prometheus. That being said, I am looking forward to the rest of the prequel movies to see how everything ties together.
Is the dinamic between the Humans and David and the way the Engineers treat the Humans. We created David and look down upon him as a robot and treat him like shot because he is just a robot. The Engineers act the same towards the Humans. They are furious with them when they wake up and at the same time 2000 years before we're on their way to destroy us.
good Alien violence and action; however some pretty dumb characters for a colonization effort. You would think they would have the brightest. I did like the the continuing them from Prometheus
Overall I liked it. It was definitely the 2nd movie in the trilogy. It was nice filling in more of the backstory into the xenomorphs. Really some of the dumbest characters I've ever seen in a movie though. Kind of took me out of it a little to be honest.

Scott has said there will be 2 more "prequels" to Alien.

Try as I might, I can't decipher this post.
Honestly the more I think about it, the less I like Ridley's
retrofitting of the universe. I really get the feeling that he's trying to disregard a lot of what Cameron did with Aliens, mainly due to one revelation regarding the Xenomorphs.
Huge fan of the original, Aliens was great when I was younger. I like Prometheus a lot, even though it seemed to be so unrelated to the story in a lot of ways, it did set up this new series of films. It was thought provoking and had a lot of mystery and I love that.
Putting aside my basic personal issue with just seeing how hard it is to conjure much new formula and pretty much relying on the same "old" techniques (don't want to say too much), I think Covenant was overall, strong to very strong and it totally delivered. Not great, but about as good as I could have reasonably hoped.
Fassbender (as usual), was unbelievable. I didn't have a problem with too many of the characters, but I don't really care much for Daniels. There is just something a bit plain jane and mopey about her that I don't care for. Not saying she should have been hotter.
Looking forward to getting into details and reading more opinions what we go "full spoiler" mode here on BBI. Was avoiding this thread as much as I could before I saw it. I hate to know anything...but of course, I haven't been able to stay away from all the articles and info on the internet for the last year or so.
Been looking forward to this movie for years and probably my favorite series of films of all time. Lots of others that have had better films and consistency, but there is something about these monsters and the whole Alien universe that really fascinates me.

Sorry autocorrect. In Promethius humans have created artificial intelligence i.e. David. Humans treat David like shit because he is a robot. They really don't give treat him as an equal because he is a robot.
Prometheus starts off with a Engineer sacrificing himself to create DNA on beautiful earth. The engineer gives his body to create human life.
Fast forward to Promethius you have Wayland (I think that's his name) asking the Engineers to extend his life after he has been in cryo sleep for 2000 years (That number is not a coinsidencd). Which pisses the Engineer off and he kills Wayland on the spot and rips apart David.
The engineer treats humans their creation, just like the crew treats David.

retrofitting of the universe. I really get the feeling that he's trying to disregard a lot of what Cameron did with Aliens, mainly due to one revelation regarding the Xenomorphs.
I think that's a valid concern. His public comments about being in charge and not giving up the reins again makes me think he doesn't consider Cameron's creations (i.e. the queen) to be canon.
Overall, I thought it was pretty mediocre. Fassbender was great, and some seriously scary concepts to keep you up at night (you ain't ever getting me to go into cryo-sleep)
I do appreciate the effort to bridge the mythology from Prometheus to Aliens, but also disappointed at the part of the Cameron storyline that's been disregarded.
On the downside, aside from David/Walter, this move had the same problem as Prometheus - the characters in Covenant essentially all sucked. I found them to be a mixed bag of dull nitwits, and didn't give a shit about any of them outside of hoping they'd blunder their way into some exoticly gruesome deaths (on which front the movie delivered).
What made Aliens great was the characters - Ripley was a bad ass. Hicks was a bad ass. Vazquez was a bad ass. Hudson was the comic relief. Burke was a great slimy bad guy. Gorman was good as the gutless leader who redeems himself in the end.
Covenant was symptomatic of modern day Hollywood - a cookie cutter blend of losers. An hour after seeing it and I can't even recall their names. The only reward at the end of this one was walking out knowing that they're all either already dead or will be soon.
But I am curious about Covenant and likely will see it at some point. It's just that I don't really care too much about a "mythology" behind the aliens. I wouldn't mind movies that depict the havoc one facehugger-infested person can wreak upon a system, but I don't care much about how they came to be and actually kind of prefer it to be a mystery that leads the victims to have no idea what they're dealing with.

Ya know.. I thought the same before I saw Prometheus, but after I saw it - I became more interested on how they came to be and how it all leads up to the 1979 original
Personally, I much prefer Cameron's bug version of the Xeno
life cycle than Ridley's weird all over the place one. Covenant doesn't even make sense in regards to Scott's original movie w the eggs in the Soace Jockey ship. Shoulda just made Blompkamp's Aliens 2. I think most people prefer Aliens to Alien just how Terminator 2 is a better movie than the first.
RE: Personally, I much prefer Cameron's bug version of the Xeno
abandoned almost logic when considering how a Terminator would actually act. For example, Sarah Connor should have been killed by the T-1000, who went through the effort of impersonating her but spared her life. Dumb.
2 completely different movies. 1 is a horror movie, the other is a pure action film. I appreciate both in different ways. But If you look at all the movies Aliens is the one that doesn't fit the most because it's an action film. And poor David Fincher getting screwed by the producers, but I appreciate Aliens 3 a hell of a lot more now, then when I first saw it.

Ew.
I would absolutely say most people prefer T2 to T1, and the same goes for the Alien franchise. Ask most people on the street, and T2 is well known to most whereas many have not seen the first. Alien and Aliens are very different movie, but Cameron's movie was the reason we saw endless toy, shows, video games, not Scott's movie.
If David created the Xenomorph just before Covenant (in 2104), how come there was a mural on LV-223 in Prometheus that showed the Xenomorph life cycle? That mural was at least 2000 years old? Also, on LV-426 the Engineer/Space Jockey and Xenomorph eggs that the Nostromo crew found were ancient to the point of being fossilized. Alien takes place in 2122, which is not long enough for those things to have occurred if David created the Xenomorph during the time of Covenant. Is Ridley retconning or is there something else going on?
Something about movie "franchises" that just turns me off. That said, Alien and Aliens really are great.
