Wagner-McGough CBS Sports: NFL Front Office Power Rankings: 49ers, Buccaneers challenge Patriots for top spot
"7. Giants
They had a pretty quiet offseason in free agency, which makes sense given how active (and successful) they were a year ago when they went out and snagged Janoris Jenkins and Olivier Vernon. They managed to upgrade on offense this year. Getting Brandon Marshall for cheap could be a steal, especially considering he won't be forced to be the Giants' No. 1 target in 2017; that role still belongs to Odell Beckham. The Giants' offense will be difficult to stop in the red zone with two receivers capable of snagging jump balls. The long-term signing of Jason Pierre-Paulis also big. Last year, Pierre-Paul proved he could overcome his fireworks accident.
In the draft, the Giants got Eli Manning his pass-catching tight end in Evan Engram. Then they bolstered their already good defense with defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson. Finally, they got their quarterback of the future in Davis Webb in the third round. Some thought Webb could've been a first-round pick."

History

Christl Packers.com: Offensive line was 'crown jewel' of Lombardi Packers
Former Packers QB John Roach opens up about Vince Lombardi’s quest for perfection, speeches & mood swings.

"On Lombardi’s offensive system: “It was simplistic. (Lombardi) was with the (New York) Giants and so was Tom Landry and they had the same plays except backward. In Green Bay, odd numbers were to the left and even numbers to the right. In Dallas, it was just the opposite. The plays were very similar. Landry probably had eight formations. Lombardi had three. Green Bay had red, blue and brown (formations).”

"I played only one year with (Cowboys middle linebacker) Lee Roy Jordan, but he told me stories where he’d be getting on guys because he came from playing for Bear Bryant (at Alabama). It was more like Green Bay. Lee Roy said he was yelling at one of the offensive halfbacks one time because he didn’t think he was putting out. He said Landry pulled him aside and said, ‘Leave him alone. I don’t want emotional players out on the field.’ Lombardi wanted us to play with strong emotions. Landry wanted everybody mentally calm. So they approached the emotional side of the game totally different.”

"On crushing the Giants, 37-0, in the 1961 NFL Championship Game: “We played a perfect game. (The Packers) had lost the championship the year before to Philadelphia and it had really hurt them. I wasn’t there, but I was told Lombardi was really preaching to them. He really got us ready for that game. And the Giants weren’t near as good as we were. We practiced that week before and I think it was like 17-below zero. We went out on the field, the ball was slick and frozen. We didn’t stay out there but 15, 20 minutes. In New York, it was like 40, maybe 50 degrees. When (the Giants) got to Green Bay, it had warmed up. It might have been 20 degrees. It was cold, but nothing like it had been. For the Giants, it was really cold. We’re on the field warming up and some of our linemen were rolling their sleeves up and the Giants came out with parkas, heavy sweaters. They trotted onto the field and looked at us, and everybody knew who was going to win the game. We were just going to decide what the score was.”

"On the 1962 title game at Yankee Stadium won by the Packers 16-7: “The wind was blowing so hard and it was so cold, it was really miserable. Y.A. Tittle was their quarterback and Bart was ours. It was hard to throw the ball. They’d throw it perfect to about halfway before the receiver, then the wind would take it."

Turney PFJ: 1959: Zone to Big Daddy?
http://nflfootballjournal.blogspot.com/2017/05/1959-zone-to-big-daddy.html

Bechtel SI.com: In 1954, long before the Cavaliers even existed, CLEVELAND was at the center of the sports world, with the Browns and the Indians on title marches. The attention only intensified when the city’s biggest star became embroiled in a sensational murder trial that riveted the nation.

I second Eric's motion.
As for the Giants articles, all I can say is of course the offense will be more open and not as conservative. We had OBJ and nothing else last year. Literally, we had zip.

I have a very good feeling about RB Perkins, Vereen and Dwarka (yes, if healthy he'll surpirse...a big IF) and potentally our rookie 4th round pick also blossoming as the season moves along.

The offense has redzone weapons this year in Marshall, Engram, maybe even Ellison, Adams and Tye (who looked good late in the year). We lack a backup WR behind Marshall and OBJ so hopefully both stay healthy all year or close to it.

But as has been noted on many a thread, we really need this OL to gel & develop. The improved TE blocking will help, for sure, but Flowers & Hart need to hold their own this year and give Eli that little bit of comfort.
I want to thank you as well,

Analytics/projections be damned, I just don't see Dallas winning 10 games this year and the division.
Agreed

It's all in a day's work for the Dawg Wonder.

wouldn't even know where to start pulling this together on a daily basis. There are some terrific articles provided every day because of your effort. None of us can say thanks enough for your dedication to the Giants and this site.
The Duggan article is excellent...
Dan in the Springs : 5/19/2017 10:34 am : link
the one about the offense not being conservative. A lot of people have questioned about why the offense seemed to take a step backwards, and a lot are projecting that this year's offensive acquisitions will mean taking a step forwards. I like how Duggan highlighted the quotes from McAdoo's radio interview which imo explain well how difficult it is to project anything this year. Will we score more? Will we be more aggressive offensively?

Clearly McAdoo is saying that he will adapt to the game situation. If the defense takes a step forward as most of us hope they will, there is a good chance that we will see one of the most frustratingly conservative approaches to offensive football in a while. Keep this in mind as we set scoring expectations in 2017.
The Carolina article on the option...
Dan in the Springs : 5/19/2017 10:41 am : link
is really interesting. The author took the time to make an interesting case for an unconventional position.
And the article on why Blount chose Philly over NYG...
Dan in the Springs : 5/19/2017 10:48 am : link
is just laughable. Tries to make the case that Philly gives him the best chance to win now because of Wentz.
Read this quote...

Quote:
"The chance of making the team, having a championship run, having a better season. They're a really good team. They were a really good team before I came here.

"They have a lot of really special players on their team, they make a lot of good plays. I just want to fit in somewhere."
emphasis added

Then he tries to explain further:
Quote:
"I think every team is trying to win championships," Blount said. "No team is going out there expecting to not win. I think every team is expecting to win. You build the team around players who you know who will help you do that. Carson is one of the type of players you want to build around. I think they're trying to win now. For sure."

Coming up with that response is hilarious. Might as well have just come out with the truth - Philly made the best offer.
I look forward to this post every morning. Thanks Defenderdawg !

LB:'Coach B:If I don't come back, what's the team I can go to that has the best shot at a SB'?
BB: 'Philly. They have Wentz'.
LB: 'That's good enough for me coach. This means a lot to me. Thanks'.
BB: 'If you don't come back, we wish you well, LaGarrette'.
Thanks everyone
