The depth issues and this years team?

River : 5/19/2017 4:28 pm
QB Manning if he were to not be able to play we have
Smith/Johnson Webb This is much stronger than last year.

RB Perkins/ Verreen.
Gallman Darkwa Draughn Better than last years depth.

FB we shall see but we have Ellison who can line up there and
Shane Smith in camp who could get the spot. and even Herslich??

TE Engram,Ellison,Adams This is a far stronger unit than last year.

Oline Flowers Pugh Richburg Jerry Hart Fluker,Bisnowaty,Wheeler,Dunker,Jones, Holmes this by far a better group to start the process of a Line then what we had last year.

WR Beckham Marshall Shepard Harris Lewis King Rudolph Powe.

This group is far deeper than last year because Cruz was done and the addition of Marshall is like having 2 number 1 receivers on the field. Shepard will only grow in the Slot when teams start to account for our new TE weapons.
Very deep group.

Defense Is already playoff caliper and only lost one player that will be replaced on the DLine. So its as good if not better than last years.

Kicking and ST will be decided more after camp.

I would say this team is stacked to make a run at their next lombardi trophy. There are back up players we didn't have last year and I think any team that thinks they can cover this offense in Cover 2 or Tampa 2 will have a huge surprise coming. Also the glaring weakness of if Eli get hurt has been addressed as I think Smith would shine in the Mac offense if we needed him to win games.

Schedule makers did us no favors, time to make the other teams fear playing this Giants team. As much as the Defense was fixed last year I think Reese and Company did a nice job on the offense this off season. This could be a very explosive Offensive team with a Defense that makes you pay for every yard not to mention the backfield can take the ball away too. Exciting times ahead.

Our #4 CB is lousy.

LOL. How many teams have a fourth CB worth anything? Honestly, we can hope someone steps up from the UDFA crop or a veteran comes loose June 1 but I think we'll be OK so long as our big 3 stay relatively healthy.
secondary depth is a bit shaky
BlackburnBalledOut : 5/19/2017 5:18 pm : link
but yea this team looks very strong. depth is key to all successfull teams, and as of right now, we look to have a solid roster. though the #4 corner is no issue now, one injry put whoever that is on the field. DRC gets nicked up often and comes out for a few plays, so i would like to see something there. maybe one of the kids like hunter or deayon can contribute here. i loved what i saw out of deayon in pre season last year ( i know its only preseason but for an undersized UDFA i thought he played well verse select competition. Hunter has been a little underwhelming to this point.

but yea depth looks much improved, agreed
We're thin in the defensive backfield...

But if we can avoid any long-term injuries I think we'll be okay. I also believe that our pass-rush should be much improved (again, health permitting), and that should help to mitigate any deficiencies in the Secondary.

I think that the upgrades we've made at TE, RB, and WR should make for a more efficient offense, and that should take some of the pressure off the defense, too.

However, much will depend on the performance of our offensive line, and that's still a very big question at this stage of the game.

Finally, our schedule is a real bitch. The west coast trips, the number of teams we have to play after their bye weeks. This team is going to be tested as much mentally as they will be physically. I hope they're up to the challenge.

Yep, absolutely about the schedule

The schedule is brutal. I would love for us to get a 4-0 start as we should be a strong team right out of the gates. 4-0 vs the NFC, 2-0 vs the NFC East, well, that would just be great for a team that is bound to have lulls on the west coast road.
The wild card is injuries.

Every team has injuries. The Giants will have injuries. Who gets hurt, when, and how badly, will make a big difference.

Cluster injuries are the worst. We had a couple of years where our defensive backs were decimated which was part of the reason we invested so much in the position.

This is why I couldn't understand the article about DRC being on the bubble.

Cluster injuries can destroy a team. Think about it: lose OBJ & Marshall for half a season or worse and this team's offense resembles last year's, only maybe WORSE!

Lose DRC & Jenkins and our defense is quite average. ETC.

Health is the key to NFL success. Stay healthy, get healthy late. Also, hope your rookie class begins to contribute as the year goes on to change things up and such.

Collins, drc, apple, Jenkins ... 99% of the NFL would kill for this. BBI - not impressed.

More correctly, it would be the Giants are thin in the secondary at back ups, maybe.....

And if, God forbid, we lose one or more to injury, our backups are, as of now, suspect. That's what "thin" means.
Those top 4 guys are clearly "A" level type guys
Jimmy Googs : 5/21/2017 9:43 pm : link
The issue is 5-9 guys are D- at best.

The are basically just short of not being NFL players.

Hence the depth issue in Secondary.
