LA Rams on the Rise?

BlackburnBalledOut : 5/19/2017 6:14 pm
The rams were pretty terrible last year, winning only 4 games. With a new coach and staff to go along with a young qb and a damn good defense (they did take a step back last year) I think the rams can compete for a wild card this year. I dont think seattle will be as good as theyve been. Like the Giants their line is not an asset, or hasnt been for a few years. I dont think Eddie Lacy will be very productive as the new RB over there. The 9ers are looking like theyll be trash for at least another season or two and the Cardinals took a step back last year as well, they also lost Calais Campbell in the off-season

Their young qb, jared goff, has some weapons at his disposal with the explosive Tavon Austin and reliable #2-3 in Robert Woods formerly of the Buffalo Bills.

They beefed up their o-line by adding andrew whitworth to play LT. This moves former #2 overall pick Greg Robinson to RT. LG is manned by the veteran Rodger Saffold. They also brought in former Viking John Sullivan who was a staple in Minnesota for some time. Todd Gurley should have a bounce back year behind this improved unit. They also added FB Sam Rogers in the draft who is a violent lead blocker and can be a threat (for a FB) with the ball in his hands as well

In the draft the rams added 2 notable weapons to Goff's disposle. They got TE Gerald Everett in the second round. Everett will give Goff a reliable tight end target, tightends can be a young qb's best friend and Everett is an all around player who could contribute immediately. They also drafted WR Cooper Kupp in the 3rd round. Kupp is a wildly athletic receiver, who catches the ball well and is elusive with it in his hands, though he played at a small school he was pretty highly regarded in this draft. I could see him fighting his way up the depth chart and becoming a starter sooner then later.

Their defense is pretty stacked, and will have a very good DC in Wade Phillips there to run scheme.. Aaron Donald is an animal, Michael Brockers is a very good NT in their 3-4 D. Robert Quinn and Connor Barwin man the OLB positions while Alec Ogeltree and MArk Barron man the middle of the field. They have Trumaine Johnson coming back on the tag, paired up with EJ Gaines who quietly played well with 56 tackles, 7 pd, and a FF.

The game isnt played on paper but right now it looks like the Rams are heading in the right direction and have a formidable roster.

*** I apologize for a non-Giants thread, I just like to analyze football as a whole and the Rams kinda stood out to me. aaand there isnt much to talk about this time of year. Happy weekend to you all.
do a recap of the Browns, we all seem to have a soft spot here for

The Rams..

were one of the least competitive teams last year. It wasn't due to coaching. It was due to a poor OL, a QB who looks unlikely to become a superstar and skill players like Austin who disappear for long stretches at a time.

They have Seattle's number, so they have that going for them. Other than that - not much at all.
There's a natural human tendency
81_Great_Dane : 5/19/2017 6:32 pm : link
to think things will go on the way they are. We assume that last year's bad teams will stay bad, and last year's good teams will stay good. Football pundits are especially prone to this error.

In reality, change is constant. Young players mature. Older players age. Luck, good or bad, swings games, and a couple of games swing a season. (Luck doesn't always even out over a season.)

The Rams have a fair amount of talent, and the upheaval of the move west is behind them. Their fan support should be a little better. Their young QB isn't a rookie anymore. They're in a good position to surprise a lot of people if their young talent develops. The Seahawks seem to have moved out of their window and need to retool; the Cardinals are kind of an enigma; and the 49ers are rebuilding. It's a great opportunity for a "miracle" team to rise up. The Rams could do it.

I'm starting to see Rams gear in stores more. I have yet to see a single piece of L.A. Chargers gear anywhere. That'll take a while, I expect.
I wouldn't exactly call Austin explosive
Gman11 : 5/19/2017 6:34 pm : link
He doesn't seem to be a #1 guy that they can count on.
yeah, i'll believe it when i see it
George : 5/19/2017 6:40 pm : link
the brownies, on the other hand, will win a few games this fall.

He's not a #1, he has the ability to break away and make a big play, thats really all i meant by explosive. he has top end speed and can make defenders miss. but no hes not a #1

Cooper Kupp is "wildly athletic"? That seems generous.
What Fatman said. But I never thought Jeff Fisher was ever a good head

coach, so I'm guessing with this new coaching staff the arrow had to point up.
Same shit we hear every offseason

about the Jags.
Their QB may not...

even be able to play.
Goff looked horrendous last year.
SimpleMan : 5/19/2017 9:00 pm : link
Maybe not the best way to gauge a player, but in Hard Knocks he looked like some surf bro with no competitive fire. Didn't strike me as a leader. They have Tavon Austin for a few nifty end-a-rounds per year but their passing game lacks anything to be feared. Gurley is great but gets zero blocking.

Donald in 3-4 will be interesting but Wade is a wonderful DC.
Rams are an interesting

case study on NFL teams that underperform on paper every year despite who they plug in to the mix.

The last few years they have been an extremely tough out about 4-6 times a year and the rest of the season they have been pretty mediocre. Their thorn in the side of the Seahawks and victories against Indy, New Orleans, Denver show they can live up to their potential at times. At times.

Should be a good watch to see how McVay and the coaching staff take the Rams to the next level. If Goff is a decent QB, McVay will handle that O and Wade will figure out the D. The ceiling will largely rest on Goff I think. And if we are going by last year, not so good so far.

I would also caution writing off the 49ers as a perennial loser going forward. Niner fans might have been overestimating the last two offseasons, but now I think even the fanbase may be underestimating what to expect this year and next.

You could say all this about the jags too
Giantsfan79 : 5/20/2017 9:37 am : link
All these years of drafting in the top 15 and you would hope they'd eventually start winning.
I think that the Browns are the team on the rise
Jay on the Island : 5/20/2017 10:10 am : link
They are setting up to get a top 5 pick next year to get their franchise QB. They have two first round picks next year plus three second rounders. They have collected a lot of young talent. On offense they have Joel Bitonio, Kevin Zeitler, Cam Erving, and Roderick Johnson on the offensive line plus Njoku, Corey Coleman, Isaiah Crowell, Duke Johnson on offense. On defense they are loaded with Myles Garrett, Jabrill Peppers, Danny Shelton, Emmanuel Ogbah, Carl Nassib, Jamie Collins, Caleb Brantley,Larry Ogunjobi, and Howard Wilson.

What makes Phillips so good is that he builds his defense around the strength of his players. Jay Ratliff was an undersized DT and he was a pro bowl NT in Phillips' scheme.
The Rams will suck again this year, and you should put NGT
PatersonPlank : 5/20/2017 10:34 am : link
in front of the title so everyone knows its a non-Giants thread.
And Kupp isn't a wildly athletic receiver,
BillT : 5/20/2017 12:03 pm : link
He ran 4.6+ and had below average numbers in the vert and broad jump. His shuttle and 3 cone were very good. Doesn't mean he won't be good but his skills as a route runner and ball catcher were what had people interested, not his athleticism.

Wade Philips as a DC.

The man can flat out coach defense

Rams will be improved just because of his presence imo
