GIANTS LG JUSTIN PUGH EYING BIG CONTRACT - (
New Window )
Also, ninth best in pass pro is good but hardly all pro level. Pugh is nowhere near as good as Snee in his prime and he was picked higher
Snee was also much more durable early in his career, yet his contract turned out to be an albatross. Major pass on giving Pugh 12 million a year and 30 million in guaranteed money
Lets hope Pugh & Richburg both have monster years and Flowers stays healthy and really ups his game. That would be a big boost. I also think Flowers can be a dominant run blocker with his massive frame and strength so running to the left side could finally be a plus for us. TE Ellison and maybe guard Fluker could make the right side formidable as well.
Go Pugh!
To effectively grade offensive linemen as pass blockers, for example, you need to know the protection scheme, the checks at the line of scrimmage, the communication between adjacent linemen, and the launch point of the quarterback- on every pass play.
Not even an experienced offensive line coach could accurately grade another team's linemen. The best he could do was to get a general impression of them. It's called scouting.
Those grades on PFF aren't even remotely accurate.
and yes, the giants can afford that.
I disagree. Pugh has been better thus far and has more versatility but his concussion history and price tag will be the reasons that he moves on via free agency. I would love to have him back but I don't want to spend 12 million per season on him. I hope that Richburg signs an extension soon because I expect him to break out this year and he will command much more after the season. The Giants have been looking for a long term center since O'Hara retired and unless Brett Jones takes a huge leap forward in his development the Giants do not have anyone on the depth chart who can take over. The Giants have a few intriguing options at LG if Pugh leaves in Bisnowaty, Dunker, Hart, or Jones. Center is a more important position than LG.
The Giants have a healthy cap situation. And as long as their high priced guys stay healthy and play well, it will remain healthy and allow them to keep the players who are productive. If somebody leaves, it won't be because the Giants couldn't afford him, it will be because he was deemed replaceable.
In this league, you can't pay top money for potential or performance for 2105 and 2016.
This conversation might be mute if he limps through another year.
However, as with Hankins, the Giants do not value Pugh as highly as he does, and, based on the this year's market, not as highly valued compared to the rest of the league.
Giants offer likely will be a couple of million dollars less than the offers he gets elsewhere. Pugh, for his apparent desire to be a Giant, will have to decide if he gives a hometown discount. If he leaves, he may decide to play in a state with no state income tax.

Can you elaborate on how you know the Giant's value of Pugh?
There are no facts in this statement.
If he has an all pro year and stays healthy they will be more inclined to pay him.
Not necessarily. We'll see what the market looks like next year, who's available and what they're asking for. And there's always the draft if it comes to that.
As for Pugh's "leadership role," I think it's questionable at best.
This is a question that will not be answered until 2017 is almost over (best case scenario is he plays lights-out for the first 10-11 games and gets signed to an early extension). My gut tells me he's not there yet, but for the Giants sake I hope he gets there.
