GIANTS LG JUSTIN PUGH EYING BIG CONTRACT - ( New Window )
As always they will assign a value
Dave on the UWS : 5/21/2017 10:19 am : link
to the position. It will likely be less than what he will be asking for
Why do they list his run blocking in 2015 but not 2016
Vanzetti : 5/21/2017 10:24 am : link
Seems like cherry picking your stats

Also, ninth best in pass pro is good but hardly all pro level. Pugh is nowhere near as good as Snee in his prime and he was picked higher

Snee was also much more durable early in his career, yet his contract turned out to be an albatross. Major pass on giving Pugh 12 million a year and 30 million in guaranteed money
Pugh's value is in his versatility as well
SGMen : 5/21/2017 10:26 am : link
If Flowers went down, well, you'd have to think it may be Pugh who moves to LT despite his shorter arms. I don't think anyone else on this roster is capable of handling LT.

Lets hope Pugh & Richburg both have monster years and Flowers stays healthy and really ups his game. That would be a big boost. I also think Flowers can be a dominant run blocker with his massive frame and strength so running to the left side could finally be a plus for us. TE Ellison and maybe guard Fluker could make the right side formidable as well.

Go Pugh!

Will re-sign one of Richburg and Pugh, and going by history, you go with Pugh. He is more versatile and has been better thus far. Still, he has to stay healthy. That's easier to plug into contracts with language or some offsets.
PFF Grades
AndyB : 5/21/2017 11:03 am : link
What PFF does is the equivalent of grading an exam without knowing the correct answers.

To effectively grade offensive linemen as pass blockers, for example, you need to know the protection scheme, the checks at the line of scrimmage, the communication between adjacent linemen, and the launch point of the quarterback- on every pass play.

Not even an experienced offensive line coach could accurately grade another team's linemen. The best he could do was to get a general impression of them. It's called scouting.

Those grades on PFF aren't even remotely accurate.
he is worth 10 - 12 M annually

and is an ideal LG in this offense

and yes, the giants can afford that.

I disagree. Pugh has been better thus far and has more versatility but his concussion history and price tag will be the reasons that he moves on via free agency. I would love to have him back but I don't want to spend 12 million per season on him. I hope that Richburg signs an extension soon because I expect him to break out this year and he will command much more after the season. The Giants have been looking for a long term center since O'Hara retired and unless Brett Jones takes a huge leap forward in his development the Giants do not have anyone on the depth chart who can take over. The Giants have a few intriguing options at LG if Pugh leaves in Bisnowaty, Dunker, Hart, or Jones. Center is a more important position than LG.

No reason they can't sign both Pugh and Richburg to longterm deals if both have good seasons. And if Fluker shines, they could sign all three of them.

The Giants have a healthy cap situation. And as long as their high priced guys stay healthy and play well, it will remain healthy and allow them to keep the players who are productive. If somebody leaves, it won't be because the Giants couldn't afford him, it will be because he was deemed replaceable.
Who cares about 2015 stats.
ZogZerg : 5/21/2017 11:26 am : link
What did he do in 2016?
This season is what matters to the contract
larryflower37 : 5/21/2017 11:27 am : link
If he stays healthy and plays at the level he is capable of the Giants will pony up.
In this league, you can't pay top money for potential or performance for 2105 and 2016.
This conversation might be mute if he limps through another year.
It really all comes back to

That's what she said.
Let's say for the sake of argument...
Milton : 5/21/2017 11:49 am : link
...that Fluker wins the starting job at right guard and he, Righburg, and Pugh all play well. If that means you have to figure out a way to sign all three of them to longterm deals than that's a good problem to have. How nice would that be to have the interior OL set for the next four or five years with three plus players all entering their primes.
This is likely to be similar to Hankins, but player performance is not
Ivan15 : 5/21/2017 11:59 am : link
Hankins was the weakest link of a very strong D-line. Pugh is the best player on a very weak O-line.

However, as with Hankins, the Giants do not value Pugh as highly as he does, and, based on the this year's market, not as highly valued compared to the rest of the league.

Giants offer likely will be a couple of million dollars less than the offers he gets elsewhere. Pugh, for his apparent desire to be a Giant, will have to decide if he gives a hometown discount. If he leaves, he may decide to play in a state with no state income tax.

Can you elaborate on how you know the Giant's value of Pugh?

There are no facts in this statement.

If he has an all pro year and stays healthy they will be more inclined to pay him.
If the Giants don't want to pay Pugh 10 million
RetroJint : 5/21/2017 2:12 pm : link
next year, they will be paying somebody else that same sum. Justin truly has them by the balls. There is no viable replacement on the current roster . He also has assumed the leadership role on the unit. It's not necessarily the center .
Pugh has had a history of injuries
xman : 5/21/2017 3:28 pm : link
so I'd be careful. Lets see if he makes it through the year
$12+ million per year

Not necessarily. We'll see what the market looks like next year, who's available and what they're asking for. And there's always the draft if it comes to that.

As for Pugh's "leadership role," I think it's questionable at best.
Its also a relative question....
WideRight : 5/22/2017 8:54 am : link
How much more would they pay Pugh relative to the next available guy?

This is a question that will not be answered until 2017 is almost over (best case scenario is he plays lights-out for the first 10-11 games and gets signed to an early extension). My gut tells me he's not there yet, but for the Giants sake I hope he gets there.
And our O-line FAs bust more than boom.
WideRight : 5/22/2017 8:55 am : link
.
I just don't think Pugh is worth that much.
Brown Recluse : 5/22/2017 9:54 am : link
One thing to consider though is that the Giants are a loyal organization and prefer to pay (and overpay) their own players.
