NFT: Yanks Might Try Hicks at 1st Base

mavric : 5/21/2017 10:21 am
Interesting thing the Yankees are doing. They are currently hitting ground balls to Hicks with the idea that he could possibly play 1st base.

I don't expect him to field a ball like Teixeira, but that would be a big plus if he can play the position better than Carter or Holiday.

Hicks belongs in the lineup every day, but as all Yankee fans know, there are three outfielders who stand in his way.

What say you?

Like it. He is more athletic than holiday. Keeps Carter out of the lineup. Austin has started laying games. Hopefully he came back on time 6/1
They've said it's just for "emergency" situations,

but if he can capably field there, he'd certainly be a better option than Carter.
Hicks needs to play

more often than not. And you know he is a defensive talent. Whatever keeps him out there.
If Bird doesn't make it back soon...

I think Mike Ford might get a shot. Ford is an undrafted late bloomer who is having a terrific year at Trenton and SWB. And, of course, he's a natural first baseman. Perhaps they give Hicks some games, but he still belongs in the outfield. Ellsburry isn't in Hicks' way. His salary is in Hicks' way.

Hicks is got a cannon for an arm. That would be kind of wasted at 1B. Short-term or for a double switch once in a while would be OK. When is Bird due back ?

I look at it differently. Looking at today's lineup, Hicks is on the bench and Carter is of course batting 9th and playing 1st. The lineup would be better if Hicks was playing 1st rather than Carter.
Hicks needs to be in the lineup every day

and I'm sure that's why the Yanks are trying him at first. His switch hitting ability and solid batting from either side of the plate is too great to have him sitting on the bench and cheering on guys who can't seem to hit the ball.

Rotating him in and out of the outfield helps, but if he could also play an adequate first base, then he'd be playing almost every day.

I'm so glad that Joe stuck with him even when the fans had started to get on his case. Joe knows what he has in his players and Hicks only needs to play regularly to be a huge asset to this team. I'm glad Joe is trying to find more ways to get Hicks in the game.
I would just play Hicks everyday

And platoon Gardy/Ells/Holliday at the OF/DH spots with Hicks starting everyday in CF or LF. He can also spell Judge once a week and let Judge DH

Good problem to have.

AAA Scranton is also LOADED with MLB ready 4th OFers, I know organic is best but I would have another fire sale this year if the yanks aren't leaders of the division on late July. Gardy, Ells, Romine, headley, Tanaka, Pineda, Cc, Clippard, I'd trade as many as possible.

Also some kids need to be traded soon also before they become risks for rule 5 and stuff

Get this bum Carter away from this team
Austin played yesterday at Trenton

I'd guesstimate he's a week or less away as long as all goes well
Trade for

Gerrit cole
Judge is an awesome outfielder

but if Bird doesn't pan out, imagine him as a target at first base. I think he has enough dexterity and athleticism to handle the grounders etc.

Pineda???
Judge at 1B
GiantJake : 5/22/2017 11:46 am : link
I understand that they don't want to overwhelm Judge this season with learning another position, but he would be a massive 1B target. I also worry about the way he plays OF with reckless abandon that his body will break down over time. Judge being a part-time 1B and sometime DH will cut down on the wear and tear. Hopefully, Greg Bird gets back and becomes the hitter that the Yanks expect him to be, but having an occasional righty option at first base makes a lot of sense. Tyler Austin could eventually take Chris Carter's spot this season, but moving forward it makes a lot of sense to get Judge and Sanchez reps at 1B to increase team flexibility and to protect the young sluggers.

should try Ellsbury at 1st...Hicks is by far the better center fielder.
