NFT: Why I'm Not Worried About the Yankees Sudden Drop Off

mavric : 5/21/2017 11:02 am
I was watching the game the other night with another buddy who is a die-hard Yankee fan like me. He was falling apart because the Yankees weren't playing well and I thought he was going to have a brain aneurysm when Torryes misplayed a ground ball to third. I told him to let it go. That it's a long season and in baseball, it's a collection of ups and downs that averages out over the year.

Also - and mainly - because I already committed myself to accepting a year or two of shoddy baseball as the baby bombers get themselves established at the major league level. Prior to Spring Training, I had absolutely no thoughts of winning a pennant, but had resigned my hopes to watching my team muddle through the season near the bottom of the standings or at best, in the middle of the division.

But like so many fans, my hopes got up when our pitching looked strong and the sudden emergence of Judge, (Byrd in Spring Training), Hicks, etc. Also, the re-emergence of Headley, Ellisbury, and Gardner looked like they were back to expectations. But like all seasons, we are getting injuries losing Byrd, Sanchez, and now Chapman as well as the sudden struggles of Tanaka, it is no longer an easy ride that is as much fun to watch.

Also, it's a long season. There will be "skids", there will be "hitting slumps", there will be pitchers "losing the strike zone and overthinking everything".

We must keep in mind that this season was supposed to be a throwaway season - a chance for the new kids to get a feel for the big leagues. Even 2018 was going to be a sharpening of the skills of the baby bombers and we were setting ourselves up for a pennant run in 2019 after adding a couple of FA superstars to the kiddie corps who would now have a couple years of major league experience under their belt. That all changed when the team tore through Spring Training like a runaway train and got off to a hot start whipping some very good teams.

So just trying to keep things in perspective. This might not be their year - which is what we all expected in the first place. The good and bad streaks are part of baseball and we still might end up playing into post season, but if we don't - that is what we had prepared ourselves for in the first place. So have heart and don't fret over the current slide among this very young team learning at the major league level. Unless Tanaka has an injury that we don't know about, he will be back. Chapman will be back. Byrd will be back and will go on a HR hitting streak at some point. Sanchez will get hot and likewise have a streak of his own. And enjoy watching Castro try to win the batting title, Didi making slick plays, and Judge hitting tape measure home runs.
yanks

A glimpse of the future and hope future so far in 2017

The Yankees have some potential great young lineup pieces going forward both in MLB and MiLB. They'll have to make some good calls on who to keep and who to trade off and they'll need good health. Gene Michael was on the MLB channel during the Jeter media blitz and he brought up how fortunate the Yankees were that Bernie, Jeter, Posada, etc stayed healthy for long, long stretches. It's been a great two months so far but now the pitching that we all knew was a house cards is taking on wind. We'll see if they can reenforce it enough this year to stay in contention. Regardless going forward the Yankees will need to add a lot of good pitching either from their minors or trades or FA's to be a championship contender.
The best news is the depth of their young talent.

Indeed, they are going to probably have to trade away some of it to get optimum value. There is surprising talent already at the MLB level that we hadn't counted on--Hicks and Castro, in particular, and Judge being ahead of schedule. Castro has been a revelation, and I doubt that he's about to turn back into a bum. When he shows decent plate patience, his swing is world class. And, of course, a healthy Gregorius is blocking another infield slot. So, yeah, they will find room for some of the best minor leaguers, but others will, I expect, be used as trade bait for starting pitching.

I'm most worried that Tanaka may very well be done, but still use up a lot of salary room. CC, too, even though he apparently has a few good games in him.
Tanaka won't stay if he keeps stinking it up

Tanaka has way to much pride and dignity to take the Yankees money if he doesn't feel he's earning all of it. It's Japanese culture. Just hope he doesn't take it as hard as Irabu did.

I have no doubt that the Yanks will pick up a solid pitcher before the All Star break. They are overloaded with prospects that might never get a shot at playing time in the majors wearing navy blue pinstripes (Dustin Fowler jumps to mind who will probably never get a shot). The outfield is loaded and a strong possibility that the Yanks pay premium bucks for a FA outfielder next year. But they need to hang onto their minor league pitchers.

You can never have too much pitching. As Yogi said, "Pitching is 90% of baseball and the other half is hitting", lol
Exactly

Like it or not, this is a rebuild and it's not over. It would be great if the team continues to overachieve and makes a playoff run, but that's not the long game here. The Yankees need to get Bird and Austin back healthy. They need to allow Sanchez and Judge and Hicks to keep playing consistently. They need to keep putting Montgomery out there every 5 days and keep developing the young bullpen arms and use the Scranton shuttle as necessary. The Yanks could be in a position to once again sell at the deadline. They don't have any big ticket items, but they do have some assets that a team could use for a playoff run. Pineda, Clippard, Gardner, Carter...get what you can for them and, more importantly, open roster spots for the next wave of young players like Adams, Frazier, Fowler, Torres, Wade, etc.
Maybe because it's only been a couple games

The Yanks are on the rise

but a lot of their individual performances over the first quarter of the season were unsustainable. They'll be fine. They have a bright future, which we can all see coming but probably isn't quite here yet.

The Mets, on the other hand...
It's really...

hard to take shit like this seriously when a 4-6 record in their last ten games is considered a "sudden dropoff".

It is pure moronic ramblings.
