NFT: David Wright

shut down from his throwing program. It's going on June and he can't be closer than two months away at best with his throwing shoulder impingement. At what point does he call it quits? I have strong doubts that he will ever be able to play third base again with his arm issues, I suppose he could platoon at first base with Duda/Flores, but at this point what is the point? Does he try to make it back for a late season run and call it quits, or does he push on beyond this year?

I love DW, but he hasn't been an impact player in 4 years.
He has 60 Million reasons

reasons to keep showing up.
Unless they negotiate some buyout he will keep at it.
David's done. I think he knows it,
Section331 : 5/21/2017 11:24 am : link
and the Mets know it, and they'll wait until after the season to negotiate a buy out. I don't think any of us had any expectations for DW this year.
Insurance
Samiam : 5/21/2017 11:26 am : link
Isn't the contract insured? Assuming it is, the Mets would not be on the hook for the $60m, what difference does it make if he's on the team or not since its highly unlikely he'll ever play again unless he's holding a roster spot they need for someone else.
Can the Mets do

What was done to Prince Fielder?
My only expectation this year was insurance money

sad end to his career but it is what it is. Hopefully they can get him a ring while he's still "active".

It is but it is a payback situation, The Mets pay it out and recover I think 85% if he doesn't play for the year. So the Mets are on the hook every year for the 20 Mil.
If he plays a certain amount poorly they are on the hook
Its' over

The injury effect his hitting? If it doesn't why not trade him to a American League team. The Mets might not get much for him, but it's better than him being on the sidelines and not contributing at all.
Great player
HomerJones45 : 5/21/2017 12:07 pm : link
a shame his body wouldn't hold up.
It really sucks. DW is probably my most favorite Mets of all time.
PhiPsi125 : 5/21/2017 12:12 pm : link
He was on a Jeter-like trajectory (obviously without the rings). He was so good and so full of class. He played in and handled the NY limelight in all the right ways. Some of these guys (Harvey) could have learned a thing or two from Wright...but I understand that everyone is their own person.

When Wright and Reyes came up around the same time, I was thinking they would be the cornerstone for the Mets for the next 15 years. Quick rise and a hard and long fall for the Mets during their time. It's really a shame that the Mets couldn't build around those two but we all know the history.

Thanks for the memories DW. You were a shining star on this team. You deserved better.

Sad to see it all end this way. He's finished, though. I'm sure he knows it.
Wright and the Mets should reach an injury settlement

Call Sandy and offer to pay the balance of his contract and it's done.

He might agree but he is not walking away from 3 years 60 mil and I don't know the Mets have the resources to buy him out unless we have a repeat of Bobby Bonilla
We r at the game right now

The Mets insured the contract, and have a settlement of something like $48M coming to them if he doesn't play again. That settlement goes away if there's a buy out.

There's basically zero incentive for either side to agree to a buyout.
Can he still bat? Can he DH in the American League?
Marty in Albany : 5/21/2017 4:33 pm : link
Dumb question, but I don't follow the Mets.

Potententislly yes. But between his chronic back and neck issues, it seems doubtful he'd hold up long.

But even if he could, how does he get to the AL? No team will take on his contract. And the Mets aren't going to release him and eat the whole thing. So it's a moot point.
Just friggin' retire already

...get the Doctors note and collect you're money. Do not pass go, do collect 65 million dollars.

Talk about a slow death.
It is sad to see this happen to a guy like Wright
Jay on the Island : 5/21/2017 8:25 pm : link
However, only the biggest homer fans could honestly say that Wright was going to make it back at some point and be a league average player.
Is Wright's situation like Prince Fielder
pjcas18 : 5/21/2017 8:32 pm : link
where he's going to be on the DL for 3 years?

Fielder will be on the DL until 2020 I believe, Wright's contract also runs through 2020.

Probably. And ultimately that's better for the Mets than if he actually makes it back as a mediocre player. If that happened they'd lose out on the insurance coverage.
hopefully
