NFT: Twin Peaks 2017

madgiantscow009 : 5/21/2017 6:47 pm
Starts tonight on Showtime.

Little is known regarding the plot of the new series, but Showtime president David Nevins stated that "the core of it is Agent Cooper's odyssey back to Twin Peaks"

Any interest?

The original show

was good to start out with, then just got weird for the sake of being weird. Quit watching it in the middle of the second season. It just wasn't interesting any more.

Don't have Showtime, but if I did I wouldn't watch it, not even for the curiosity factor.
I'm definitely...

going to watch. Probably not tonight but I'll watch anything Lynch does...
I never watched the original show

I planned to binge it before the SHO series, but didn't get around to it.

Do you think I need to see the show in order to enjoy and follow the SHO series?
Hm

Thought this was another Scarlett Johannsen thread.

Disappointed.

I doubt any of it will make sense without seeng the original. You don't need to watch the whole thing. Just the first season.
Twin Peaks used to be the name

of a great little Go-Go bar in Long Branch NJ. I miss that place.
I loved the original Twin Peaks

but after discovering who killed Laura, the show for all practical purposes was over.

Unfortunately, I do not have Showtime so I'll have to wait until it is shown on Hulu, Amazon, or whoever picks it up.

The original is available on Hulu. I guarantee if you watch just the pilot, you'll be hooked. Whoever said just watch the first season is right. The main purpose of the entire series was to figure out who killed the prom girl. Once that is figured out, the show goes off into some weird angles trying to keep the audience, but it really died with the reveal of the killer.

So many great, great actors in the show. Coop is the best IMO, and Harry Truman. Sherilyn Fenn (hot little number), Lara Flynn Boyle (aka Serleena in "Men in Black II"), and a who list of crazies.
I guess my question is do you have to

Big fan of Lynch movies.
I'm looking forward to it.

I rewatched everything earlier this year.

Wasn't as enamored with as I was at 18, but I still enjoyed it.

The Windom Earle storyline was garbage. On the other hand, I think Fire Walk With Me is a movie that's aged very well and something I appreciated a lot more now.

You weren't going to find out who killed Laura Palmer, but the TV executives forced their hand. Frost quit and Lynch lost interest in it.

The first season was great, the 2nd dropped off a cliff, but then started picking up again, but by then it was too late.
Just watched episodes 1-4 (some mild spoilers)

We'll have to see where it goes, but overall, I have very mixed feelings so far. Definitely more of an R-rated take (nudity and violence) than the original TV movie, but nowhere near as disturbing as the Fire Walk with Me movie.

It's certainly a thrill to see Cooper and some of the old faces again, and some of the bits are intriguing (I liked the whole glass case plotline in episode 1). But the pacing seems off, and the story hasn't cohered yet. I know, coherence and David Lynch aren't best buddies, but in all his previous work you always had a real core of emotion, or some bravura filmmaking, even when the plot meandered. This time out the central mysteries are very fuzzy, so almost all the characters have been stuck in a confused "what's going on" state, which hurts the momentum. (I wonder how much Mark Frost was involved, because there doesn't seem to be a lot of effort to keep things tight and progressing). Not as much memorable imagery or shocks this time, either. Instead, lots of slick CGI bits that are very jarring (Lynch is always better when he sticks to simple, practical effects -- some weird lighting, unusual cuts and camera lenses). There's some attempts at the old humor, but the bits are dragged out so long that it gets kinda painful. There's a extended gag with Cooper at a casino that takes up about 20 minutes when it could (and should) have taken 5.

I'll stick with it to the end because I enjoy the world and the characters, but judging on what we've seen so far, I think Lynch has lost a lot on his fastball.
