But it's not the first time that a seemingly-friendly animal has gone "rogue" if you will. There are too many stories of dolphins going apeshit on humans. Same with koalas.
but WTF is wrong with people who do this? Who feeds a fucking sea lion?
"Her family started feeding the animal and the sea lion started to become comfortable," Fujiwara said. In the video, you can hear people laughing and whistling at sea lion and holding their hands over the water, as if they were holding a treat.

I firmly believe that the one thing I've learned in my life is that people are really dumb.

Yeah, adorable, unless you live in an apartment building on Southern Blvd. across from the zoo, and they wake you up every morning at feeding time...on the 12th floor, no less.
was when I had gone fishing out of an open charter in Howard Beach. Two of the guys on the boat were salty old bastards, cursing up a storm and being generally grumpy the entire time.
Trip ends, we get off the boat back at the dock, and there are swans. One of the grumpy old farts decides to feed one of the swans by hand, and proceeds to nearly get his finger bitten off. And of course, his logical reaction was to curse and scream at the wild animal.
there was a beach with tons of signs saying not to go near the sea turtles and if they are on the beach, do not approach them.
So what happened? Multiple dumbasses not only approached them, but LINED UP to take pictures next to the "sleeping" turtles.
People are fucking idiots.
This is an ongoing problem in Hawaii. People need to get that Instagram photo and don't think the rules about leaving protected animals alone applies to them. Similar with the seals that rest on the beach or dolphins. I have seen many times at Waimea Bay, where dolphins come into during the summer to rest, packs of people trying to swim out to them despite the lifeguards on the loudspeakers telling everyone to leave them alone. Idiots.
my kids were small fry, a bear tears ass thru the campground with a bunch of NY/NJ metropolitan idiots right on it's tail with camera's ready to go. If the bear decided to turn it would have been classic.

That happened 1-2 years ago up in West Milford NJ. An area where people often hike. Two people coming out of the woods warned others just going in that there was a bear running around up the trail. The kids headed in basically said cool lets video tape it. Anyway, one of those kids is dead now.
I walked a little ways from the camping site into the woods to take a leak and encountered a black bear about ten feet from me. I can tell you it takes all kinds of dumb to want to do anything other than distance yourself from him as safely as possible. Following it or getting some pictures was the last thing on my mind.
They rip them apart by twisting and tossing them around and try and open them up... to eat the fish inside of them. They treat Penguins as lunch boxes more than they treat them as lunch. They're vicious animals.
But if you're in a "FUCK Sea Lions" mood, check out what Orcas do to them lol.
A South African big game hunter was crushed to death by an elephant on a Zimbabwe game reserve, according to South African outlet News 24..Botha was crushed after one of the members of the group shot an elephant after she lifted Botha with her trunk. The elephant collapsed and fell on top of Botha, crushing him. Link - ( New Window )
sea lion will probably not be killed because it swam away when the guy jumped in the water. I don't see anyone trying to hunt it down. And I doubt that this incident will spawn an outbreak of revenge killings of sea lions like what some idiots did to stingrays after Steve Irwin died.
the kid (and family) was really lucky. Sea lion easily could have dragged her down and out of reach. That dude who jumped in right away REALLY had a badass moment there.

This is a good point. People think seals and sea lions are cute and cuddly, but they're pretty vicious predators.
have thrown a treat to the sea lion if you saw it hanging around the docks. It is a little different than approaching a bear, moose or some other creature that can take you out pretty damn easily.

The great Stingray War is not yet over. Never forget what happened to STeve.

But, see, that's my point. People's perception of sea lions is different from the reality that they are actually predators, territorial predators at that.

Please. Nobody on BBI has every done anything that was obviously foolish in hindsight. Don't believe me? Just read this thread.
feeding any wild animal makes them view the people and that area as a food source. They lose their fear of humans. Feeding them is essentially a death warrant for the animal.
I don't really understand the impulse to

call people stupid in these situations.
How about grossly negligent instead? If you are a parent and have your child either:
a) Sit on a wall that doesn't have a railing between you and the water
b) Get precariously close to a wild animal
That is either ignorant or stupid. People continue to believe they live in a protective bubble and when harm comes to them, everyone but their own negligence is to blame.
doing the touristy things in the Keys, and there was a fishing joint there that would let you feed the Tarpons on the docks.
Except the place was chock full of Pelicans, and those beasts are aggressive as hell. They would stalk after people just holding feeder fish to throw to the Tarpons in the water. Kids wouldn't have been safe. They weren't at all intimidated by the presence of full sized humans.
People don't think when it comes to wild animals. I stand by my comments.
are wild animals.
I'm sure glad the little girl is OK it could have ended much worse. Hopefully her parents learned a lesson.
Dicks out for Harambe
Yes, but in this case the girl is not going to be all right.
Well, they're probably children of the corn.

It's only Monday. I have hope.

lolol
Because getting close to an ill-tempered 1500 pound animal with horns that can run up to 40 mph has never gone wrong.

Nothing exciting. I froze, didn't make eye contact and after a moment slowly backed up the way I came. A non-event.

Because....what they did was stupid?

Gotcha. And allow me to extend a super special pat on the back for you for being so smart :)

Cute. Stupid, but cute. :p

They should probably put up some higher fences on edges of the dock, signs that say don't feed the marine-life.
And maybe even transport a killer whale into the harbor to eat all the sea lions. And once done, then harpoon the killer whale...
