Plaxico was doing his best to derail that team long before shooting himself, including multiple suspensions that season for missing meetings and treatments, blow ups with Coughlin on the sideline, etc... Shooting himself was the proverbial cherry on top of his bad behavior that year.
I'd rather wonder why guys with that level of all world talent...

can't put the body and mind together to be an all time great, rather than make constant excuses for their seeming lack of caring.

For all of his personal warts, Michael Irvin was always the hardest working guy on the team in practice. So was Jerry Rice. They outworked everybody, and that's why they're in the hall of fame.

After having his fifth-year option picked up on April 24, Beckham sent a series of tweets vowing to work "harder than I ever have, to be the best that I ever have been. I'm more motivated now then I have ever been. Words are only that, so its time for action. To the LOYAL Giants fans out there. I'm lettin u kno now, this will be somethin uve never seen."
Britt, please quote where I said you were racist?

I alluded to a remark you made, and yes, it was in the heat of battle, but I would certainly expect much better restraint and self control from someone that teaches children for a living (which you have reminded us at every opportunity until DunedIn took a whopping shit all over you).

Plaxico and his attitude, stupidity, immaturity cost us a shot at SB #2 in 2008. Plaxico demanded double coverage which made life easier for everyone else. Losing him was about as bad as losing OBJ would be us. The Giants didn't have time to adapt the offense and Philly chewed us up in the playoffs. Also, Antonio Pierce was clearly not himself after the incident. It just rocked the whole team, lockerroom. Just a bad day out.

OBJ Quote from the Duggan article:

Actually OBJ...it's something we HAVE seen before.

All of what you're saying is true, but there are two points to make of this to add context to why I disagree.

1) We didn't know any of that was going on at the time. By many accounts, he was considered to be very hard-working. The team did a fantastic job of burying the news of what kind of guy he was, to the point that he was a fan favorite.

2) Beckham hasn't done anything remotely in that realm. He's never even been fined or made to sit out a few plays because he missed a practice. Everyone who speaks of him speaks highly of him, from the coach to the owner.

Is it possible that Beckham is secretly a terrible person? I guess, but I find that people are very quick to fill in the blanks and create a story that matches the impression they have in their heads.

Some people insist JPP is a malcontent and a bad guy, and the Giants have been falling over themselves to get him signed long term for years and stood by him when he had one hand and didn't appear to have a future in the sport.

If these guys were as villainous, selfish, or somehow detrimental as they are sometimes categorized as, I'm not exactly sure the team would put themselves in their corners when they have much more information on the day to day personalities than we do.
Villainous?
Britt in VA : 5/22/2017 10:13 pm : link
Secretly a terrible person? No, that's an overexageration of what's going on here. I care about what he does in regards to the Giants, only. His personal life is irrelevant to me.

In regards to Plaxico? No, that played out very publicly in 2008, including right here on BBI. He was suspended completely for at least two games, and benched for portions of others. That was not hidden.
Beckham is a tremendous talent..
Sean : 5/22/2017 10:24 pm : link
but there is no doubt people here defend him a bit too much. He needs to grow up. Saying this doesn't mean I'm anti Beckham, it's just fact.

We found out in '08 that he had been a problem essentially his entire time as a Giant. Before that, it wasn't a topic. It was only after the Glazer story in September that he'd been fined over 50 times and regularly had issues with coughlin that the truth about him came out. That whole year was a total meltdown. Then the shooting happened in december to cap it all off.

Amen to that, and how about making an effort to eliminate even potential distractions...just by showing up...is that too much to ask?
Cut him now
Harvest Blend : 5/23/2017 8:21 am : link
so he can go to Dallas, Wash, Phila or some other NFC team and put up 100-1300-10+.

At least that will make some of the babies happy because he didn't show up for a worthless OTA.
Why are people that want Beckham to show some vet leadership...
Britt in VA : 5/23/2017 10:13 am : link
and participate in team building considered "babies"?
I'd say the babies are the ones...
Britt in VA : 5/23/2017 10:14 am : link
throwing temper tantrums and throwing out dumb sh-t like "cut him now and let him to a rival team!" sarcastically in response to somebody voicing a legitimate gripe.
