NFT: Best way to get from Citi Field to Manhattan after a game?

Dr. D : 5/22/2017 10:21 am
Taking my family to NY (upstate and city) as part of summer vac. Been living in FL, haven't spent much time in the city in a long time and have never been to Citi Field. Staying for a few days in Chelsea area (29th street between 6th and 7th ave).

Would appreciate advice for getting to and from Citi Field. Most concerned with returning after the game. Wouldn't be a big deal if it was myself and some friends, but it will be my wife, young daughter and son.

Is the LIRR to Penn Station a better option than the subway (where we would have to transfer from the 7 to the W train at Queensboro Plaza)?

Thanks!

I'd stick with the 7.

They usually have their ducks lined up right when it comes to getting people home from a game. On one's daily commute? That's another story.

Plus the LIRR runs less often and costs 3x as much.
Thanks Mike!

No prob. One tip: Just make sure your metrocards have enough cash for everyone before you even leave for the game. Last thing you want to be dealing with is a line 2 dozen people deep just to put money on your card.
Thanks again, Mike!

That's exactly the kind of tips I was hoping for!
Now if only the Mets can get their shit together

Some more tips...
Sarcastic Sam : 5/22/2017 11:10 am : link
Stand clear of the closing door.

If you see something, say something.

If you choose to play three card monte, do not go for the middle.
Thanks Sam

I learned my lesson with the Monte many moons ago.. Stay away!
7 train
spike : 5/22/2017 11:41 am : link
Back to 42nd street

Train might be packed so take your time checking out the sights after the game.

Mets dash on Sundays (12 and under) will require lining up outside the bullpen gate and wait about 45 minutes .

Despite what John Rocker would say

It can get crowded though..
I didn't mention it's going to be a night game

a Friday night in July. That and fact my wife is a worrier (I sometimes call her the "Worrier Princess") are reasons for concern. I would hate if the main thing she remembers from this trip is an incident while returning from the game to our hotel.. and of course I don't want anything to happen to my family.
thanks everyone

I'll stop taking travel advice from John Rocker..
it ll be fine

lots of other Mets fans will be commuting back to Manhattan from the stadium by subway.
As others have said, zero cause for concern.
Mad Mike : 5/22/2017 12:27 pm : link
It could be the middle of the night and there would be little to worry about, but in the immediate aftermath of a game, the only thing to be wary of will be all the fans ticked about the Mets' latest injury. Zing!
That train
LCtheINTMachine : 5/22/2017 12:42 pm : link
will be full of angry Mets fans after another loss as they sink to oblivion
thanks again

looks like we'll be going the first game after the all star break. Hopefully the Mets won't be already mathematically eliminated like the old days (most years until about 2 years ago?)
LIRR way quicker and more comfortable
g-baby : 5/22/2017 2:15 pm : link
take the train back to penn station and you're in walking distance to your hotel
The LIRR

also has some good deals on weekends. You can get a City Ticket for $4.25 per adult and with the Family Fare, kids between ages 5 and 11 only cost $1 (under 5 are free.)

And you can also sit with the 7 crazies in the outfield. Wear orange. :)

I don't think it's more comfortable. It gets just as crowded as the subway. However, yes, it is definitely a bit quicker.
An alternative
Pete in MD : 5/22/2017 3:06 pm : link
to taking the W train is take the 7 to the 1, transfer at Times Square, to 28th St Station, which is at 28th and 7th.
as Mike said, the LIRR runs less often
Dr. D : 5/22/2017 4:11 pm : link
looking at the schedule, depending on how late the game goes, if we don't make the 10:30 or 11 train, we'd have to wait till midnight.

that's what I was starting to think - 7 to 1 to 28th St. That would be the least walking. I don't mind walking, but wife will prolly want to be on street as little as nec. that time of night.
Why not just take a

Taxi?
Depends what you're looking for
Joey from GlenCove : 5/22/2017 6:48 pm : link
If you're looking for something thats fast, cheap, most reliable than take the 7

if you're looking for something with long delays, rude employees, overpriced, and would like to end up in hell on earth go LIRR.

I think the winner is

7 to 1 to 28th.
