NFT: Another TV Suggestion Thread

jjgmrg901 : 5/23/2017 9:13 am
My 50 Inch Samsung Plasma is starting to have problems. What would BBI suggest as a replacement. Do they still make Plasmas? I had gotten the Plasma because it was recommended for basement poor light viewing. Are the current LEDs okay with low light? Should I go to 55 inch?

Thank you for suggestions; both real and sarcastic.

I got a 55 inch 1080p LED for my basement, though it's well lit.

With 4K and smart TVs being the thing right now, big screens have never been cheaper. My 55 Inch was less expensive than the 42 inch I bought years ago.

Have fun!
Plasmas are no longer made

Never sold in high numbers, and manufacturers decided not to spend the R&D money to upgrade them to 4K.

I think you got some confused advice: the problem with LCD TVs is bright rooms, not dark rooms. Especially if you have windows facing the screen or any other light reflecting off the screen. That can wash out the picture. Though today's LED backlighted LCD screens are much better at handling that.

Anyway, in a dark room really anything is fine.
LED's are great

however, buy a soundbar to go with it unless you already have a sound system. Because the LED TV is so thin, their speakers suck and sound tinny. A sound bar will give it bass and volume that matches the picture.
You've got no choice with an LED

and they are good enough now where you should feel comfortable buying one but I don't recommend breaking the bank for one.

Plasma was such a good technology just too expensive to compete. My unit is 6 years old now and going strong. The black levels are better than my 2016 4K Samsung.
OLED

I shelled out for the LG B6 back in February and it's an absolutely beautiful tv. I was going to go with a big Vizio but I happened to walk by a electronics store in my neighborhood and saw an oled in person. That's all it took. I was completely sold after that.
I would start by figuring out what your budget is

and work from there. Tons of good deals to be found, check Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy (they price match), SlickDeals etc.

1299 at best buy. Really impressive TV. I dont think I can get a TV smaller than 65" again for our main TV. Exceptional viewing experience from all angles..
Also, use the site rtings.com to research

they do a phenomenal job. It's very easy to fall in love with a mediocre TV at walmart and best buy because they are all playing high quality blu rays/4k content. The store should be your last stop once you've made up your mind from all of the research.

for price and sheer amount of choices I suggest you peruse:

Rakuten and TigerDirect. Overnight shipping, usually no tax, will run specials with huge discounts, and both are reputable companies with great customer service. Personally, I prefer Rakuten
