David Diehl on PFT TV with Mike Florio this morning.

I just caught bits and pieces, but I did hear him say that he expected Flowers and Hart to be much improved this year, especially Hart (for whom his praise was particularly effusive).

Make of it what you will.
This is a make or break season for both

The Giants have two promising young OT's in Wheeler and Bisnowaty if either doesn't take the next step. I expect Flowers to be much improved and Hart to be about a league average RT. Rhett Ellison will make their lives much easier.
what does he, or anyone else

base that on? If either was at a training facility, I could accept that, but otherwise, just being a year older?

Flowers and Hart have both reportedly been at the Giants facilities this off-season. It sounds like there are tools there both have utilized.
I just have to believe

our OL play will be better than last year.

It's a numbers / law of averages game now. Bisnowaty and Wheeler certainly have promise and not long ago (like 8-9 months) were highly regarded. The Dunker kid was also touted. That's the brand-new guys. Fluker is in the fold; again, highly regarded a while back. Flowers and Hart SHOULD be improved. Ellison is a plus.

I mean, at least one of these pieces of spaghetti has gotta stick to the wall, right?

Noting that hart and flowers are 22 & 23 wouldn't it be fair to say the giants have 4 young tackles?

Solari's rep as a position coach is above average, and they have an entire season on tape, their first with this coach, to use in getting better. As fans, it's a leap of faith, and when a guy with Diehl's credentials supports it, you have to feel better about your chances.

I'm guessing Diehl's assessment is based on his talks with Giants
SGMen : 5/23/2017 11:57 am : link
whether they be players, coaches, office staff or whatever. He probably has a little insight. He was also a player and knows how much a young guy can improve from one year to the next.

As Ive noted on many a thread, all we need is for Flowers and Hart to be "average" NFL OT's. If there are some 40 viable LT's in the league and 40 viable RT's (viable meaning they are worthy of starting) they just need to fall in that 18 to 24 or so range, making them acceptable or average starters. With TE Ellison helping we'd be more than ready to beat most NFL defenses.
Do you guys want Ellison in to pass block? I sure don't.
Ivan15 : 5/23/2017 12:42 pm : link
I want him catching short passes on passing downs. And Ellison can only help one tackle at a time.

I think better to say the Giants have two rookie OTs to break in this summer as well.

and leave it at that...

It's a long shot that either Bisnowaty or Wheeler ever becomes an important contributor at left tackle. How often do you see a UDFA or even 6th-rounder left tackle become an above-average NFL OLT?

Finding OLTs has come to be a lot like finding QBs. They are tough to project and have a high bust rate. At least they can move to RT, or to guard, if they don't thrive at OLT, so there's a way to find value in an OLT prospect who busts.

I'm not sure why people are any more excited about Bisnowaty or Wheeler than they were about, say, James Brewer.
Brewer vs. Bisnowaty and Wheeler.
Archer : 5/23/2017 1:42 pm : link
Only time will tell if either player will have a better career than Brewer.

The Giants don't have any better options so they are hoping to strike lightning in a bottle.

Both players have the potential to be contributors.
Bisnowaty and Wheeler, have played at a high level for major programs.
Bisnowaty was team captain and projected to be a top OT coming into 2016.If Bisnowaty had not injured his foot this year he may have been a 3rd round pick.

Wheeler was also highly touted coming out of High School, but, he had both off the field issues and injuries.

Both players have questions that caused them to be devalued, but, they have a chance.

that target ceiling is quite a low floor...
Watch the film
Nomad Crow on the Madison : 5/23/2017 3:48 pm : link
When I watched film of Chad Wheeler, he got overpowered quite frequently. He really needs serious strength work. Bisnowaty has something essential to successful OL play that James Brewer never had -- nastiness. Brewer was never mean enough. That will not be a problem with Bisnasty!
As Pugh (and most of us) have said, if we can run the ball
yatqb : 5/23/2017 5:35 pm : link
effectively our pass protection will improve significantly. Ellison, Marshall and perhaps the addition of a FB will hopefully improve our running game. Ellison doesn't have to pass protect as much if defensive lines aren't constantly committed to the pass rush w/o respecting our running game.
Hart and Flowers
Big_Pete : 5/23/2017 10:37 pm : link
I think our Oline will be better than many expect. I am really intrigued by the confidence that the front office have in Hart and Flowers.

Personally I will put a lot of stock in Diehl's opinion, he is well placed to have an informed understanding of things.
