"Every year, it's the same questions about the offensive line, and rightfully so. We haven't played as well as we should," Pugh said Monday at the Newark Mentoring Movement golf outing in Bayonne. "But there [are] a lot of things that go into offensive line play than just the five guys up front. We've got to do a better job ourselves. I think if we run the ball more effectively, we're going to be all right." |
And theres more to OL play than the 5 guys up front? Yes, I agree with him (ahem, McAdoo) but when you're getting your ass handed to you in your individual battles, start there.
My guess is that Solari's style gave the OL some early fits but they slowly adjust, with the exception of Flowers & Hart who never really stood up tall at any point of the year.
You have to believe that the combination of experience (Pugh 5th, Richburg 4th, Jerry 9th, Hart 3rd and Flowers 3rd) and being in Solari's OL system for another year will translate to much better overall production. I'm a big fan of OL continuity when there is talent & upside. I think every OL not name Jerry has upside.
Also, would anyone be shocked if Fluker finally put it together and won the RG job outright? Yes, we paid Jerry well this off-season since he can pass protect BUT that doesn't guarantee him a starting OL job. Jerry is capable of playing LG, RG and even RT in a pinch. He has during his career so he is versatile.
Pugh is right, the OL has to do a better job else we won't make the big-time leap we are capable of making with the new skill position players we now have on board: Marshall, Engram and Ellison (blocking). Oh, and RB Perkins too.

Eric has said - in his film reviews - that towards the end of the season Flowers was doing a lot better
A concept we shouldve been using from the start. McAdoo needs to put a diverse offense on the field and there are no more personnel excuses.
Let me know when Pugh or any other Giant offensive lineman had a superb game in 2016.
In fact, I will make it easier...let me know when any of them had a superb block...
