grown so cynical of the NFL's thinking that I honestly believe this is because they want to limit free football. Absolutely nothing is done anymore with an eye at improving product, its always about the money. In stadium there is nothing gained by overtime football; alcohol stops being served way before and no one is going up for food during OT, and most people head out early to beat traffic anyway. On TV OT games keep you from changing the channel to the next game that's on with sold ad space; all direct ad responsibilities are dealt with in regulation, so the money isn't there in the ad's after overtime. Overtime is a chance for players to get hurt without additional revenue coming into the league, so the owners would rather it be a coin flip to decide who wins.
How many games end up going 70+ minutes deep? Is the idea that teams will "go for the kill" more with only 10 minutes to work with? Because I think, if anything, loss aversion will be stronger and you'll see more ties (and that's excluding the obvious reason being that there's less time to score).
The NFL can't really do much about concussions, but they want to at least look like they're trying to make the game safer. Thus they change the rules to virtually eliminate KO returns and now shorten OT.
The thing people don't like about regular season overtime is one team potentially losing without having the ball. Once you get past that initial possession, it's more or less fine. What's the point of cutting it down by 5 minutes? The official reason is apparently player safety, which is pretty rich given the league's insistence on expanding the thursday slate. A handful more plays in a very small number of games is a drop in the bucket compared to all the short weeks they've added over the years.
but I fail to see what problem this is solving. Were too many players getting hurt in the last 5 minutes of OT? Seems like a solution looking for a problem.
NCAA Overtime is awful. Both teams start with the ball in FG range!
I remember a few years ago there was a game that was a defensive battle and ended like 17-17 in regulation after 4 quarters and finished with like a 38-34 final. Mindless!
the NCAA overtime is very appropriate for college. It has no place in the NFL, nor is it all that exciting. A team with a shitty kicker tends to get reamed.
it should be sudden death like it used to be. If players are concerned about total minutes played, I thing you will find that most of the overtime games will end on the first or second possession with sudden death.
The idea of watching 3 1/2 hours of football only to end as it began is a waste of my time!
It doesn't end as it began. Both teams records are greatly impacted because neither one had the ability to win the game in the time allotted.
I fully understand the implications, both mathematically and physically of a game played to a tie. However, nothing is less satisfying in a competition than a tie, IMO of course!
Giving a team a chance to tie in the event of an OT FG extends some games right there - what is the point of shortening them this way?
Also - UNFAIR! 7-minute drives aren't uncommon. (Definitely benefits the current Giant offense, BTW)
The point at the time was that Kickers are much better at hitting from 40-50+ now than they used to be. If you won the coin toss, you only had to drive, what, maybe 40 yards to set up for a GW field goal.

42 yard FG could be and usually is from wider hash marks in college. It makes the angles much tougher to make. Plus a lot of the only 32 NFL kickers miss that kick from much more straight on shots. College kickers rarely are nearly as accurate or as strong of leg like most NFL kickers. It isn't some give me.
College is a joke. Madden football. And this is more faux concern for the players. They worry what an extra 5 minutes of overtime will donto players But have no issue making guys play on 3 days rest for Thursday night football. It's a joke

Well said and I didn't read down before I posted. The NFL is full of shit. It's about $$.
This 10 minute thing is puzzling. Were there people complaining that OT is too long?
+1
All ties do in the NFL is mess up the playoffs.
That's why you're a loser and we're winners!
Obviously in the playoffs overtime is necessary. But in the regular season there is absolutely no need for it.

I love ties since both teams feel like they lost!

Is there a reason that players shouldn't be paid double time and 1/2 on sundays for OT?
A lot of people on here between the OBJ thread and this one are proving to be union haters.

Probably because they didn't collectively bargain for it.
It's also okay not like unions or like unions. There are clearly reasons for and against them.

In the playoffs, play full 15-minute overtimes until a winner is determined. No sudden death.
