most importantly, owners relax rules on TD celebrations...

Mike in St. Louis : 5/23/2017 12:28 pm
"Among the allowed moves are group celebrations, the use of the football as a prop (as opposed to a simple spike), falling to the ground, and when applicable, making snow angels.

Things that are still banned include twerking (apparently), and gestures that can be deemed offensive (understandable)."

Sounds like almost anything goes except for throat cutting gesture or pulling out a weapon.

What the heck is twerking?

what about removing helmet???

that OBJ penalty still bugs me

he was right on the back of end zone if he steps one more step before he takes off his helmet - he would have been considered on the sidelines and no penalty .

From where I saw it he takes his helmet off one foot out of play then comes back in play for about two steps..

But he could have just kept it on for 3 more seconds and he would not have cost us 15 yards but hey, he won that fucking game.

Maybe Im old school, but I think after every touchdown, the scoring player should have to immediately hand write a thank you note to all of the people who got him to that point; parents, teachers, mentors, religious leaders, coaches, teammates.

Because manners.
Honestly can't fathom why this would bother anyone.

Stuff that is thought out in advance, is seldom entertaining and usually makes the player look stupid and unprofessional.

Whatever happened to "keeping it real?" Based on the games that I've watched, players generally express joy by jumping up and down, hugging, and picking each other up.

I can forgive foolishness if it is done on the spur of the moment--usually when a lineman falls on the ball in the end zone.

Lol! Yes, it's all about manners and setting examples on how to be a gentleman. Excuse me, good sir, I must depart to watch this replay of a linebacker decleating a running back into oblivion...with class and courtesy, of course.

What should be allowable after a touchdown:

1) Hand the ball to the referee (classic Mark Bavaro move) or
2) Do a simple spike (Homer Jones inspired)

Anything else should be a 15 yard penalty. 2nd violation during the game should be an ejection.

The target demographic wants...

Gatorade Dunk : 5/23/2017 3:24 pm : link
The league is positioning this as a positive change for the fans, but the reality is the relations between the league and the players really suffered last year due to the repeated (and inconsistent) punishments and fines. This is part of a larger effort to restore some trust between the two.
Only handshakes and solemn contemplation allowed!

OK, then let's stop the game after every play to allow the player making positive yardage or the player making a tackle to "have their moment". Maybe a prearranged video montage is displayed over the stadium's video screens highlighting the player's many accomplishments, his unique contributions to the team, his favorite childhood memories etc.

If I wanted to watch athletes showing their choreography skills and dance moves (which I don't), I'd watch Dancing With The Stars.

I'll take, "Act like you've been there before" over these over the top, time wasting displays.

If all these celebrations were legal last year and this was a thread about the NFL now outlawing these things, then half the people on this thread would be losing their shit.

But since this thread is about the exact opposite thing (the NFL now saying that these celebrations are no longer a penalty) the other half of the people on this thread are losing their shit.

Agreed. Some are creative but some are truly stupid. It's not a big deal, but as long as they're relaxing the rules to allow for creativity they should add a 5 yard penalty for "piss poor celebration".

I don't disagree with this...

I think the onus for the TD celebrations has always been more on the TV broadcasters than anyone else. Of course, TV wants what sells, so they've always been more than willing to broadcast even the lowest common denominator. Actually, especially the lowest common denominator.

That's ridiculous -- you have no problems with the spike but condem other celebrations as if they are any different. Just what we need more penalties.

They were celebrating like crazy in the 70s, 80s and 90s and things were just fine. If anything the penalties did more harm than the actual celebrations that were flagged. And it slowed the games down. Plus the flags demonized harmless bullshit dancing.
I wonder if...

delay of game could be applicable for teams that take too long with their celebration.

I'm with you on this. I don't mind the celebrations when they're actually celebrating the play. The unsportsmanlike conduct stuff shouldn't be tolerated.

I imagine unsportsmanlike and delay of game penalties are fair game still, and I hope they call those liberally. It's really not even a fine line. It's pretty clear when guys are being purposefully demeaning.

But, Odell dancing after scoring a 65 yard TD... it's all part of the show to me. Even Antonio Brown's antics... it's been part of the game as long as I can remember. It's not these guys are pulling Dallas star celebrations out their ass every time, showing up guys or slowing down the game.

You can call it many things, but 'time wasting'? Of all criticisms, that would seem to be the least applicable considering that we watch a sport that until just this recent offseason brought you the incredible 10 minutes after a touchdown of: commercial, field goal, commercial kickoff, commercial
