Odell Beckham Jr signs richest shoe deal ever for NFL player

bumpsinthenight : 5/23/2017 6:12 pm

The deal is believed to be worth more than $25 Million over the 5-year length, with additional incentives that could add another million to each year of the deal.

The value of his new Nike endorsement deal actually dwarfs his current team contract, as Odell’s initial 4-year deal with the Giants as a 2014 Draft pick pays him $10.4 Million over the length of the deal, along with a $5.9 Million signing bonus.

Who Will He Play For

I'm sure Nike figures OBJ will play for a big market team, so what if the Giants don't sign him in 2018? Is there a clause with Nike that he must play in a big market city? Jerry is watching.

He already has.. nearly 300 times in a short 3 year span.
I hope he and the net signed a prenup.

Of course. My point is simply that he should have gotten more, though 25 mil is a nice piece of change..They will make a fortune off of him
Good (I Think)
Trainmaster : 5/23/2017 6:50 pm : link
Gets a "NY beyond football financial benefit" from playing in NY. Maybe this Nike deal will appease him somewhat considering his relatively low salary compared to veteran, 2nd contract wide receivers etc.

He should buy his own damn boat and stay in the NY area! <g>
Sounds like it was a competitive bid...

He should've signed with this guy...

Brad Wing had a funny tweet saying Odell should give him all of his Yeezy sneakers now.

The article says it's 29 mil over 5 years with incentives possibly adding another mil per year.

They will make a fortune off of him but he made out pretty good as well IMO. Hard to do better than the richest endorsement deal in the NFL but I'm sure by the time the deal runs out, this number will seem really low.

We want Nike, Fathead, Buick and Head & Shoulders to give him millions.

Every dollar they give COULD BE one less dollar he needs from the NY Giants....

Yeah, you know, he didn't make a ridiculous one-handed catch late against Detroit to seal the win, nor did he take a quick slant to the house for our biggest win of the season against the cowboys. Let's only focus on an admittedly bad, yet sole playoff game of his career to say he can't catch/catch in clutch situations. Forget that, as Giants fans, we happen to have one of the best offensive talents to come out in a long time w/ a historic, record-breaking start to his career as one of our own. Let's focus on the boat and a bad game to judge his worth. Let's reminisce on the days when we had Chris Calloway leading our receiving corps instead.

Wow

That this bit of news might be why he is going to arrive late to OTAs this week. He's a grown man and I'm not going to apologize for him, but clearly there are matters he and other players must attend to outside of football. Would we begrudge JPP if he had to miss an OTA for a surgery on his hand, or Eli because he had to meet with his lawyer about what seems to be a trumped up lawsuit. As fans we want the players we follow to eat, sleep, and breathe football, but this is not realistic. For us football is just a game we love, for players it is just as much a job, if not even more so. How many of us want to eat, sleep, and breathe our jobs all year round. Just something to consider. These players have a lot going on.

Looked at another way, if Nike is giving out $25m, think of how much they expect to make off the deal.

This isnt really something he could have done on his own. He's not going to be a sneaker brand. It's not like a doctor deciding between $200k/year from an established practice vs. the profits from starting his own practice. Here you squeeze the most you can from the market and move on.
There goes his incentive to grow up!
nicky43 : 5/24/2017 7:58 am : link
He's probably still partying the celebration of this signing and I wouldn't blame him if he comes back down to earth in time to practice and show the Giants he is worth every penny of what they are paying him.

I'm happy for him but pray he grows up and doesn't let this money lead him into the grasps of junkies, drugs, and wild partying as we have seen happen with very high paid athletes all too often.

People buying shoes (Nike making money) just because OBJ is paid to endorse them is part of what's wrong with society. technically it's what's wrong with people, but people populate society. you're a damn fool if you buy something based on celebrity endorsement.

1. Good for him, he deserves it.

2. People talk about him like hes PacMan Jones. Note to the ignorant: he's never been in trouble (and a short trip to Miami on his days off don't count).

3. He's the most productive WR in the history of the sport after 3 years.
Meh

And I think OBJ got the better of this deal. Why? Because when one compares to basketball shoes, the vast majority of those that are spending the big $$ are middle/high/college kids that don't play organized hoops and it is as much as a status symbol than anything as they walk around in them daily.

These shoes are specific to the football field.

Nothing wrong with endorsement deals off the field.

Eli is doing pretty well there, why can't Odell?

What about the ridiculous amount of money people pay to watch a game?

How much does the average fan pay to actually attend a Giants game?

Factor in ticket cost, parking, snacks and merch...it's easy to spend well over $100 before you even sit down.

Now think about how much money the owners are getting?

It isn't like people are walking down the street in cleats. Basketball shoes are very common for people to wear thus basketball shoe contracts are huge. Are they going to make his shoe a running shoe? Is it going to be a basketball shoe? I mean will they be cleats (really shrinks the market)?

That is a nice contract for him and a gamble for Nike IMO.

They made a workout shoe (Air Trainer) for Victor Cruz, so I'm sure Odell will get the same thing only with FAR more exposure. Bo Jackson had his own famous/successful line of Nike "training" sneakers and so did Deion Sanders to a lesser extent.

This kid gets so much absolute garbage from media and by giants fans who for some reason don't grasp the idea of thid player as a whipping boy constant story and join with guys like francesa to bash the team and the player.

I for one am thrilled to have him and I think its fairly clear that he puts as much effort as anyone outside the qb to help his team win. The team says he works his ass off and you can see it on the field when he puts practice and film into the game. Unless you just think hes a selfish lazy hated primadonna?.....which is insane. Of course he has a big ego. The media here just isnt used to the Giants having a player this elite who is also a personality.

Maybe media people or fans should actually listen to the team and its players and take their word he is well liked and works as hard as anyone. Tired of these fans embarrassing themselves by saying trade him . youre lost
