NFT: So you've decided to put together a home theater...

Ten Ton Hammer : 5/24/2017 1:05 am
Kind of a pet project to build around my new OLED tv.

I realize that there doesn't seem to be much call for av receivers and speaker systems anymore considering how compact and wireless home audio has become, but I started out with a Yamaha V-481 receiver and a pair of Polk T50 floor standing speakers, and it's really impressive, refined sound quality coming from someone who only ever had sound bars and wireless audio.

I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on what would be a more worthwhile addition, a sub or a center channel? I think the floors cover the upper end very well, but they do lack the impact of a dedicated sub for some real punch when it's called for.

I'm not a bass head, and I do live in an apartment. I can't have and don't want wall shaking bass at all times. I just want enough that's it's punchy when it needs to be.

Definitely get the center channel speaker. That's mainly where the dialogue in movies comes from.
Depends on what you watch and how

If you're into action movies, I can't imagine a center channel would make enough of a difference versus the mass of a subwoofer pushing air around to pack a real punch.

The good news is center speakers can be had pretty cheap (you don't have to worry as much about the fidelity from those speakers), so you don't have to compromise, you can have both.

I think a powered sub would be a big improvement in sound quality. The low frequencies require a lot of movement from your speakers, it takes a lot of "horsepower" to move that much air. If you could offload the lower 100 Hz from your main amp and the Polks and drive it thru a separate Amp and Speaker -- I believe you'd hear the difference.

The low frequencies aren't that directional so you can put the sub in any corner and still fill the room with bass. Then you can position the Polks for the optimum seat in the house.
What configuration is your Yamaha?

5.1, 7.1, 7.2? I have a Denon 7.2 with 5 Polk Surround Sound speakers (1 center channel, 2 front, 2 back), Polk RTI-A3 bookshelf speakers, and 2 Klipsch subwoofers. The TV is a 65" Panny Viera Plasma. Looks and sounds fantastic.
Powered subs are great for home theaters

Don't waste your money on 7.1. It doesn't really add any value. Oh and yes thing have come a long way wirelessly, but hard lines are always better if you can make it happen.
Center channel speaker for sure

but a sub is still crucial. Make sure you do the research on purchasing the correct size for your room.

I've slowly been upgrading my surround sound the past 2 years and started with a Denon Receiver and Center channel speaker, and got two floor standing speakers this past Christmas (speakers are all Klipsch). Next will be the sub. My current sub is fine, so I'm not really in a rush to replace it.
Definitely get the center channel.

As 26.2 says, the dialogue can get muddy without them. With a smaller apt, I would still get a decent sub, you can easily control the output levels, and you won't have to get a new one when and if you move to a bigger place.
what was the OLED tv that you purchased?

Definitely center first, then sub.
Crispino : 5/24/2017 12:33 pm : link
The center is crucial to clear dialogue as others have said. The sub is crucial to theater type fullness for action movies and the like.
I got the same receiver this past Christmas, which replaced a Denon that I bought about 5 years ago. The sound is a huge upgrade over the Denon.

I have a Jamo center, floor standing, and rear speakers and a Polk sub. Fantastic sound, and you can get the center and the sub for under $150 each and it will sound great. I have a big finished basement and I have to turn it down sometimes because it really fills the room. Good luck.
if you wanna spend the money

It's a 5.1. I just don't see the need for a 7.1 or a 7.2. I think by the time I'm ready for that, the price will be much lower on Atmos tech receivers.

Hey, thanks. What's the model number on that center? I'll look into it.
The Jamo S60 is my center speaker.
Crispino : 5/24/2017 8:12 pm : link
Jamo is Danish company that is owned by Klipsch. The S60 is around $120.
