"Wide Right" or "18-1" ?

wgenesis123 : 5/24/2017 9:45 am
Which defense climbed the bigger mountain? The Bills offense seemed tougher to me but the Giants offense kept the ball over 40 minutes of the game. The Bills offense scored a point per minute while they were on the field. "18-1" however would not have been won without some last minute heroics by Eli and the offense. Its tough for me to choose but I think people on BBI will have strong opinions, as they always do. I kind of lean "Wide Right".
weren't the 2007

Pats the highest scoring offense in history? And they were only held to 14 points...
In the 1990/91

season the Giants were a top 3 team - Bills, 49ers and Giants - throw a blanket over them, even if the Giants were #3.

2006/07 - Giants barely made the playoffs and played against the best offense in NFL history.

18-1
18-1

My "18-1" T-shirt is now safely retired so it doesn't get worn out. That will be a family heirloom. I got so many comments and laughs at that thing. It was great.
I watched the Bills scoring something like 50 points in the AFC

championship game and the Patriots never scared me as much as the Bills did. The Bills peaked in the playoffs, the Patriots peaked during the season.

even better, when the team went from horrid to great on the backs of the DL and famous LBs, that feeling of turning things around, toughness, determination.

A wrecking crew that did not really care about what Phil Simms did or didn't do, but just simply took pleasure in messing up the best laid plans of other teams.

we're only going to score 17 points?

It wasn't the defense that beat the Bills in 1990.
Klaatu : 5/24/2017 10:07 am : link
It was the offense that kept Kelly & Co. off the field for all but 19 minutes.

Little Bill may get all the credit for the victory, but Ron Erhardt deserves just as much, if not more credit in my opinion.
The 1990 Giants were allowed to hit hard and be physical.
Mr. Bungle : 5/24/2017 10:09 am : link
The 2007 Giants were playing in a softer league, making it harder (in my opinion) to play defense.
For me it's like asking, Penelope or her lookalike sister?

THIS ^

The Giant D did an admirable job in the 1990 SuperBowl - after the first quarter, jittery Bill receivers were dropping everything - but for all intents and purposes, THE GIANT D BLEW THAT GAME, allowing Kelly to quickly move the Bills into a last second, very-makeable Field Goal attempt that was thankfully missed.

Also, in that game - Thurman Thomas deserved the MVP. Love Otis, but that car belonged to Thurm'.
for once - I agree with Beez

18-1... the undefeated team

giants had no chance.

Even in the playoffs they had to face all their demons.

First was beating Jeff Garcia, Then it was beating the Dallas Cowboys with Tony Romo at DALLAS. And lastly was Green Bay at Green Bay in one of the coldest games.

Next up was 18-0 Brady with Moss. Breaking all records and shit. Eli Manning was up. Eli facing all the adversity of being compared to his brother.

the rest is history

18-1 is the winner

The Friday before that Super Bowl I was working late and had Mike & the Mad Dog on the radio. Russo was killing the Giants...said the Bills would win 49-3. I called WFAN and miraculously got through. I said that Russo was nuts...that anyone who saw how the Giants had beaten the Dolphins earlier that year (by running the ball down their throats and keeping Dan Marino and the Miami offense on the bench) knew how the Giants could beat the Bills.

On Monday, I called WFAN again, got through again. and had the pleasure referring to Russo as "Nostradamus." Unfortunately, he took that day off.
Thurman Thomas for MVP?
wgenesis123 : 5/24/2017 10:34 am : link
So than the "Wide Right" Giants defense had the better or tougher opponent.
18-1
TheMick7 : 5/24/2017 10:42 am : link
Brady calling out Plax before the game because Plax said Pats would only score 17 points...No one except Giants fans thinking we could win...Tyree,Smith,Jacobs(4th & 1),Plax.....and of course Eli...18-0 goes to 18-1!
Yeah I go Buffalo.
Jimmy Googs : 5/24/2017 10:50 am : link
Patriots were out of control that season too because nobody could handle Moss and they were putting up a bunch of 50pt games. But they kind of started slowing down offensively in the playoffs and seemed a little "ripe" for a loss soon.

Buffalo was just a machine offensively at every position...
18-1

Huh, I thought the Giants played the perfect game against the Bills.

To me the Patriots game was simply amazing.
18-1

but its an age thing
Buffalo also had Thurman Thomas

Wide Right!
The 1990
PaulN : 5/24/2017 11:41 am : link
Giants team was a better team then the 2007 team, but the accomplishment of the 2007 team is by far the greater achievement, who the hell did Buffalo ever beat in the biggest game, nobody, the Pats would have won 2 more rings and have the all time greatest team of all time at 19-0 if not for the 2007 team. That defense played the game of their lives to beat that juggernaut. The 2 playoff runs made by the Coughlin teams were all time great playoff runs, beating great teams along the way. The regular season for both those teams was a little more then mediocre, that is what makes them so intriguing.

that asshole also said they woukld lose to Green Bay 47-7 in the 2007 NFC Title Game. What a jack ass.

Love that egg on the face of the people picking against the Giants.
Wide Right

People seem to forget how the Giants squeaked by the 49ers to get into the SB. And the Giants won with Hoss. And that Bills offense was incredible.

Not even close.

A 9-7 team, with a D most of us questioned all year and just happy it came together in the first playoff game and just hoping it would that same D would just show up in Dallas and give us a chance; then on to the frozen tundra, etc, to have AP hold off 2 blockers and the runner from a deep sideline gain, plus on-again off again Corey Webster not only jump the pass but actually catch it; then holding a team that math-averaged 34 points a game, not to 'only 17?', but to 14, with Wilson both keeping up with and also knocking down the last 2 passes to Moss; gimme the 18-1 all day long and twice on Sunday.

I agree, although the Bills were also fortunate to face soft, finesse, warm-weather teams at home in their AFC run. The Chargers actually defensed the Patriot offense as well as anyone had up to that point in the 2007 AFC title game -- if Rivers wasn't playing on one leg and LDT didn't check out, it might have been even closer.
18-1
NNJ Tom : 5/24/2017 2:02 pm : link
Beating the Bills was sweet, but as it turns out, beating the Bills in the Superbowl wasn't that difficult.
I felt pretty good going into both games.I thought the Bills were soft
Victor in CT : 5/24/2017 2:13 pm : link
and could be intimidated. And obviously they could be, ask Andre Reed.

After the way the Giants played the Pats in the last game and the 3 playoff games I felt they had a real chance to win. And the Pats seemed to think that they we pre-ordained to win.
Not to brag,
Fred-in-Florida : 5/24/2017 2:36 pm : link
but I was at both games.

Went with my wife vs the Bills, and had to scalp tickets. Talking her into spending money that we didn't have was tough.

Went to the Pats game with my son. Got tickets through the lottery.

Had a great time at both. Memories for a lifetime.

Can't chose between either.
I was only 9 years old for Wide Right,

and while it was an awesome experience as a kid, I don't think I truly appreciated what I was seeing. I had also only recently started watching football "seriously". With 18-1, I experienced the 17 years in between and while it wasn't anywhere close to the lean years of the 60s and 70s there were some rough times, especially as the lone Giants fan in my family living in Philadelphia. Super Bowl 42 is one of the single greatest upsets in sports history. It was so improbable and the few days that followed, from taking an entire week off work because that's what you do when you're young and dumb, to popping a bottle of champagne in my living room and ruining a sofa (there's young and dumb again), to traveling up for the parade and meeting some BBIers (hey Vin, you up for some Burger King breakfast sandwiches and Jameson?), are some of the greatest memories of my 20s. The whole thing was just an amazing experience.

18-1 for me
I was working in an office in 2007 that was 100 % Eagles fans before
wgenesis123 : 5/25/2017 5:09 am : link
my arrival. Also the little farm town in South Jersey that I lived in seemed to be 100 % Eagle fans. I was so happy I did not want to share it with them. So I just listened to the silence from all the loud mouths I had endured for 8 years. It was amazing to hear their silence and see the looks on their faces the next day. The victory was just so sweet there was nothing they could say.
I'd go 18-1, but only because of the difference between eras
jcn56 : 5/25/2017 7:34 am : link
I think the teams back then were better than what we have now, even with the statistical accomplishments that belong to the 07 Pats.

There's also the fact that the Giants did it with their backup QB. At any rate, one thing was consistent in both cases, most analysts didn't give us a snowball's chance in hell of winning either game.
The difference in eras

is big in my view.
Both unbelievable mountains to climb....

But inspite of my handle, I'll go 18-1, because the SBXXV did benefit from just a little help from Scott Norwood aka Wide Right!
