Bills release OT Cyrus Kouandjio

Jay on the Island : 5/24/2017 2:03 pm
The Bills have released former second-round pick Cyrus Kouandjio. They also released former Giants quarterback Josh Woodrum.

IIRC there were reports that the Giants were high on Kouandjio back in the draft. He would be a very good low risk high reward signing.

A ton of us were interested in Kouandjio.
GiantFilthy : 5/24/2017 2:05 pm : link
I remember tons of concerns about his knee(s) leading up to the draft.
I agree
Anakim : 5/24/2017 2:06 pm : link
He's very young and has starting experience. Wouldn't hurt to bring him in.

But didn't he have a run-in with the police or something?
I remember some of you

wanted this guy.
How nice... He was Winnie the Poohing it

"Kouandjio underwent hip surgery in late January after what the team described as a fall at his home. Then, on April 19, a farmer in Elma, N.Y., called 911 and told police a "large man" was wandering his property.

According to the Buffalo News, police responded and found Kouandjio, wearing a T-shirt and underwear but no pants. He had parked his vehicle alongside a nearby highway that had been closed for hours due to a serious wreck.

"He was acting real confused, but he was no threat," a police source told the News at the time. Kouandjio was not arrested in connection with the incident."
Probably because of this

Must have a serious screw loose to be a 2nd-round, 322-pound, 23-year-old OT and...unceremoniously let go.

Found in a field with no pants on in Bumfuck, NY. I mean, seriously...Do hope he's OK.
Anyone have more insight as to what happened that day???
GuzzaBlue : 5/24/2017 2:27 pm : link
He was never charged with anything. Police seemed to just let it go, very strange. Not sure what he could have been charged with, but odd situation.
Amazing how many of these Alabama OL

Who on earth suggested that they wanted Kouandjio over Pugh??
Didn't his scouting reports

make him seem like a much better fit at LT than RT? Maybe Sy can give us his old scouting report on him.

I think he was drafted in 2014, no?

Here was his draft profile ...
Beer Man : 5/24/2017 2:54 pm : link
STRENGTHS Excellent body mass with extremely long arms. Uses his length to push rushers wide -- day trip to run the arc on. Has the ability to drop anchor and stymie the bull rush. Can latch onto, control and maul his man. Can hook and seal or widen the hole in the running game. Flashes the ability to bury defenders. Will be a 21-year-old rookie and has clear potential -- is physically gifted with raw, moldable tools.

WEAKNESSES Has heavy legs and lacks ideal foot quickness for blind-side protection. Footwork and hand use have to be coached up -- looks clumsy at times. Carries his hands low. Struggles to subdue counters and gets beat across his face -- limited lateral quickness and needs to strengthen power step and inside punch. Average contact balance -- too often bends at the waist and slides off blocks. Inconsistent clearing his feet through traffic and spends too much time on the ground. Labors to cut off fast-flowing linebackers and sustain on the second level. Could stand to develop more of a mean streak. Tied for the slowest 40 time (5.63 seconds) of any participant at the combine.

DRAFT PROJECTION Rounds 1-2 (top 50)

BOTTOM LINE Massive, long-limbed, inconsistent, overhyped college left tackle whose sheer dimensions, raw tools and high ceiling are far more appealing than his snap-to-snap performance at this stage of his development. Has enough length and anchor strength to survive on the left side, though he will never be a dancing bear, and he projects more ideally as a bulldozing right tackle in a power scheme.

Yep. Warmack, Fluker and to a lesser extent Kouandjio were all considered "can't miss". Hopefully Fluker can turn it around.

Cordy Glenn performed well enough to get a 5-year $65M contract extension from the Bills, so not all of the massive OL prospects that the Giants liked have sputtered.

Got beat out by Cordy Glenn at LT who is penciled in there for years to come.

Has shown he can’t play RT worth a Damn — which is to say, he played worse there than the likes of Jordan Mills.

On top of it all, the issue with smoking too much spice and getting caught by the cops. Doesn’t play well in Blue Collar Buffalo, where we ran Beast Mode out of town for less.

Good riddance Cyrus, good luck to you, and here’s hoping Dion Dawkins is a better 2nd round tackle (and that Seantrel Henderson gets a waiver from the NFL to smoke his weed).

Quote:
While he faced difficulties coming out of UA, he invested significant time during his off-season’s improving and actually was very solid last year (receiving very high grades from PFF). This is a real shame. I wish him well.

Quote:
May not have made team at final 53 but did improve every year and was decent last year when filling in for Glenn. I think this was more a cut around off field issues and that this was a Whaley pick.

Great point here. OL busts are becoming more common rather than not. 15-20 years ago, it seemed these guys were the safest positions to draft. I think the transformation of edge players to athletic speed rushers probably has a lot to do with it. Mack, Miller, Beasley, Ingram and Mercilus just to name a few. These guys are so fast and strong, it's difficult for a 320 lb linemen to stick with them all game. Go with lighter OL and guys like (hmmm our entire DL), Bosa, Watt will over-power you. There is a ton of top-end DL and not so much OL.

It seems OL is pretty thin across the league. If you go thru each team's depth charts, it's pretty disappointing how many very good RT's there are. It's becoming a very difficult position to play (OL).

Over Pugh? Hell no! As a camp body/competition? Why not? He's 23 and has the size to play OT.

Makes you wonder how they evaluate collegiate OL. Just about guy they allegedly like a lot turns out to be absolutely nothing in the NFL. Flowers and Hart stink. And Richburg and Pugh are, at best, OK players in this league.

I actually talked about this with friends this weekend. It used to be legal or at least a form of it. Basically, it is fake weed that WAS legal and is supposed to come close to replicating the effects. It is now illegal and there have been numerous reports of people smoking this stuff and acting crazy (psycho crazy).

Flowers may or may not be a bust, but for the sake of argument, let's say he is. Hart was a 7th round pick, so you can't complain about their evaluation of him. And Pugh and Richburg are starting quality players when healthy (at the very least, and at best they are Pro Bowl quality players). So really that just leaves us with the misfire on Flowers--and the jury is still out on him. Now go look at the OL taken in the top ten over the past ten or twelve years. More than half are either busts or disappointments.

It's a crap shoot. Across the league and across all positions, the first round is filled with more busts than Pro Bowl players. My mantra is: don't judge a personnel department by how many times they strike out, judge them by how many times they go yard.
There is no harm in bringing in Kouandjio
Jay on the Island : 5/24/2017 4:12 pm : link
He would come cheap and he does have potential. Perhaps Solari can get something out of him. It is an encouraging sign that the above report says that he did improve each year.
Don't bother.
Red Dog : 5/24/2017 4:38 pm : link
Fluker and Bowie are worthwhile reclamation projects. Kouandjio is not.

Fluker played well enough to stay in the SD starting line up through his rookie contract. Bowie was a starter in Seattle and played well enough for the Seahawks to get signed by another team (Cleveland) before he was hit with injuries.

Kouandjio, on the other hand, was never close to being a starter in Buffalo. He was nowhere near unseating Cordy Glenn at OLT, and unable to beat out a string of real nobodies at ORT. And that's before it became apparent that he has significant mental issues on top of the physical stuff that caused him to slip in the draft.

with Flowers, Hart, and Fluker, they should bring him in. Don't care how high Flowers was drafted, how young, or how athletic he is, bring in as many potentially legit players as possible. They traded a 4th rounder for Keith Rivers because he was highly touted as a prospective NFL LB. No risk here, give him a shot and see if he can improve the O line group.

It was a 5th round pick and the Bengals used it to select safety George Iloka.
