Better than JC, Robinson or Kennard, have to assume he's strictly depth at MLB to replace Sheppard maybe? He could push for reps over Kennard on passing downs or he could be here to scare Geno Smith.... OH NO GE-NO - ( New Window )

He is better than Kelvin Sheppard and Mark Herzlich. If Goodson isn't ready or just not good enough to start Hodges could assume Sheppards role from last season.
...our LB corps in general needs better depth in terms of ability to play real downs on defense if necessary due to injury.
Herzlich's "position" is special teams. His specials play is his value to the team, and that value isn't nothing. However there's almost no way the team can afford to carry a kicker, a punter, a long snapper (who used to be a linebacker), and a fourth special teamer who isn't a decent backup on defense, especially while carrying three quarterbacks.
So Herzlich is smart to be working out on offense. He's going to need to be a special teamer, last-ditch linebacker, and/or last-ditch TE/fullback to justify a roster spot.

If he was a starter or in the rotation on Defense I understand but as a special teamer he's really done a nice job over the years. Every year a guy like Herz will be fighting for a roster spot and eventually he'll get overtaken.
And off the field he's all-pro. I get that doesn't win games, and I do think he has to compete very hard to have a spot, but he's earned that right.

I agree. He's certainly not LT but he's great on specials and solid on the goal line. Until this team finds someone that's a complete upgrade he should be in blue.
RE: If the Giants sign Hodges it may mean that they don't think Goodson
Not necessarily.
It just means that he's better than the last guy now in the unit.
Remember the joke about not having to outrun the bear; "I only have to out run YOU!"
It appears that Hodges won't appear in a Giants uniform
What a shame, since he looked like a super player at BC before the cancer.
As for Hodges, I think we'll know more tomorrow. I wouldn't give up on signing him yet, Marty. They can always cut Thomas if they need $ and feel that Hodges offers more to us.
Giants have 8 million in cap space before these two signings
Hodges is young, has decent experience and could probably play any of the LB spots in Spag's system.
If we go sign Hodges (possibly for a one year deal), what it does mean is that we will have excellent competition in training camp.
We have to remember that Devon Kennard, Keenan Robinson, Jonathan Casillas, J.T Thomas and Mark Herzlich are all off contract after the season.
Really good points.
Also, his 3 sacks would have more than doubled the sacks of all our LBs last year. And his 2 INTs would have been 2 more than the 0 we had.
I'd take him over Thomas.
Robinson and Casillas as WLBs. Goodson and Hodges as MLBs. Kennard as the SAM. And Hodges can spell Kennard if he gets injured or even if they want extra run stoppers on the field.
Even if you like Goodson (which I do), we don't have another MLB on the roster outside of UDFAs.
There is no reason to believe Hodges will sign for anything more than the veteran minimum, so all this talk about who he'll replace and cap room is pointless. If they sign him, he'll replace the 90th man on the roster. As for cap room, he won't change anything (the difference between his vet minimum contract and the current 51st player would be negligible).
And the same goes for Devin Taylor and that Nacho guy. These are depth signings for the 90-man roster to protect against injuries, not depth signings for the 53-man roster to compete for starting job. I'd be both surprised and intrigued if any of them sign for much more than the vet minimum.
There are a bunch of interesting names still available in free agency, but in all likelihood they will be signing one year vet minimum deals (or close to it). It's a buyer's market this time of year. top 50 available free agents (according to somebody) - ( New Window )
At the end of the day, if Hodges signs he is a backup LB

Is there any word on how the Devin Taylor meeting went? Did it even happen? Usually we hear something

He's not? What do you base that on?

So the cap will not prevent them from signing any additional free agents on one-years.

Anything can happen in camp so having veteran presence and depth is always a good idea.
