Jarron Jones - the Sleepiest Sleeper?

adamg : 5/24/2017 6:18 pm
I just watched his game against Miami last year, and he looks as disruptive as Malik McDowell looked at times.

I didn't realize how athletic he was: 6'5'' 316 and he just knocks the interior Miami OLmen around like their nothing. He makes Senior Bowl attendee and fifth round pick Danny Isidora look feeble at times and makes a ton of tackles in the backfield.

Looking at his NFL Draft Profile, the wrap for why he wasn't drafted seems to be work ethic and questions about how much he loves the game. If those question marks turn out to be misguided, I could see this guy being a huge steal in UDFA.

I also read that he was the first UDFA we targeted. I don't know if that's true, but he was signed nearly immediately after the draft. And, looking at that game, I could see why. He seems like he can be a true 3 tech or a guy who comes in on third and longs and rushes the passer from the inside.

Anyone think he may unseat Bromley and Thomas and steal that 3rd DT spot?
I think you're right

The guy has huge upside. Probably better than any of the other UDFAs or even quite a few of the draft choices But Marvin Austin had huge upside as well. Love to see him put it together. Imagine another talented DL on this team. Yikes.
He's super talented

It could be another Okwara situation where the team sucking in certain areas impacts the guys they have. Okwara was surprisingly good for a raw UDFA, I think Jones sticks and bumps someone off the roster.
To be honest...he looks like an UDFA
Jimmy Googs : 5/24/2017 6:33 pm : link
But since Bromley and Thomas do as well, he could stick...
No.
Klaatu : 5/24/2017 6:44 pm : link
But he could unseat Bromley or Thomas and take the 4th DT spot.
Question
AcidTest : 5/24/2017 7:49 pm : link
with him is motivation not talent. With that talent, his motivation must be considered pretty poor not to be even drafted.

sure question his desire, but the flipside is you never know how a guy with all the measurables like Jones has is going to do when NFL bullets are flying, regardless of your evaluation of him at the Combine.

Jones has the physical ability to be a player. NFL.com scores him as a "true boom or bust player" and in Spags scheme, with the DLs we have, he may just boom.
Practice Squad?

I'd be surprised if 2 rookies make the team at DT; I don't think we'll carry more than 4 at the position
I think he unseats Bromley

That's my prediction
Romeo Okwara may be the key for Jarron Jones

It is ironic that D lineman from Notre Dame have gone undrafted but display great measurables and potential. JJ has talent and being around superior talented professionals may be the inspiration needed to unlock his drive for excellence. In honesty Thomas may be the greatest at risk. JJ is a penetrator who has the ability to rush from inside and breakdown the pocket. If the light comes JJ can be outstanding.
If only he were a sleeper I would be more encouraged...
Milton : 5/25/2017 6:40 am : link
But coming out of Notre Dame, he has been on everyone's radar for a long while. Not only was he not drafted, he wasn't even a priority free agent who received a signing bonus. Hard to imagine he is in competition for anything more than the practice squad at this point. And if he does make the practice squad, I would see about converting him to OL, where his measurables make for a better fit.

If you want a sleeper pick at DT, Josh Banks at the 3-technique is your man. Wasn't invited to the Combine, but he had a good Pro Day.

Broad Jump: 09'04"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.50
3-Cone Drill: 7.61
In comparison, Jones ran the 40 in 5.33 seconds and had a vertical jump of 20.5 inches, which was the lowest VJ of any DL by four fucking inches. So we're talking about zero explosion out of Jones if you go by the numbers.
Let's be real about JJ

I have no problem with him making the team as a Harrison or Tomlinson backup, although from an organizational strength point of view, I would prefer him as the 5th DT residing on the PS.

Somebody wanted him to be used inside on passing downs. This is crazy talk. Look at that 40 time. It is a fatal flaw for that kind of specialized use.
If anyone hasn't seen the highlight game versus Miami
Jay on the Island : 5/25/2017 10:09 am : link
I certainly recommend it. Jones performance was so dominant and he performed like an early round DT. Let's hope that going undrafted was the wakeup call that he needed. I would love it if Jones beat out Robert Thomas for the 4th DT spot.

His 40 time is irrelevant. His speed off the snap and ability to disengage is more important as an interior pass rusher than 40 time. He isn't running 40 yards to sack the QB.

What's his speed off the snap? His 10-yard split was 1.96 and 1.87 for the two 40's he ran at the combine. And what's up with a 20.5 inch vertical jump? That's 3 inches lower than the VJ recorded by the 353lb Zach Banner.
Unless Jones is stepping right into the rotation...

... or has a dominant pre-season, there is probably no need to use a roster spot on him. Teams that passed on him six, or seven, or ten times on Draft Day - and didn't outbid the Giants for his UDFA services - aren't likely to claim him off waivers, or sign him off the Giants' practice squad. Why would he look any better to them in September, when they won't even have a chance to coach him up, than he did in April?

That said, the lower rungs of the Giants' DT depth are wide open this year. Bromley is running out of lives; Thomas appears to be JaG; And for all the enthusiasm about Tomlinson, he's a rookie too.
Just to add a bit of fuel to Jarron Jones Combine debate...
Big Blue Blogger : 5/25/2017 11:32 am : link
...some of his Pro Day numbers were even worse, though he did improve his vertical a bit.
40-yard : 5.47 (+.14)
20-yard: 3.15 (+.07)
10-yard : 1.91 (+.04)
Vertical: 24.5" (+4)
Broad: 102" (DNP at Combine)
Shuttle: 4.77 (DNP at Combine)
3-cone: 8.01 (DNP at Combine)
Bench: DNP (22 at Combine)

The measurables might support the knock on Jones as lazy, because there seems to be a broad consensus that he has NFL talent.

Of the lot.

If I'm running 40 yards to make a tackle, we're not winning that game.

Paraphrasing Lloyd Bentsen, "I knew George Martin. George Martin was a friend of mine. Jarron Jones is no George Martin."
