Driving through New Haven and going to stop at the Peabody Museum for a dinosaur obsessed boy.
Going to stop for Pizza which is much loved though I have never had New Haven Pizza. Which is the best pizza stop for a family with two small kids that would prefer to avoid a crazy crowd on a Sunday in June (some line is ok but rather not stand and wait for thirty min plus).
We eat all things and the idea of clam and bacon pizza would be one of the first things we try.
To borrow from Jack Woltz...the Italian bomb at Modern is the best piece of pizza I've ever had, and I've had them all over the world!
The Peabody! Love the Simpsons where they're at Yale and, I think, Monty Burns conceives his son behind the Eskimo exhibits. Probably I'm remembering that wrong but it's something like that.
Modern isn't even the best pizza on State St.
I of course would rank Sally's first and foremost. Best pie hands down, don't expect nice service though. You have to know what you want and what to expect ( don't dare put anything on the table when hot apizza is coming out!). The potato, red pie, and clam casino are my favorites here. the perfect clam casino apizza is clam, parm, bacon, garlic, and cherry peppers, my mouth is watering now thinking about it.
Modern is solid, although I've never had the Italian bomb. Da Legna's is pretty good too, although they get a little carried away with some of the specialty pizzas toppings (truffle oil? Cmon)
Anyways enjoy the Peabody and enjoy some New Haven Apizza. If you have time check out the Yale Art Gallery too, always an great visit.

I second that ...Sally's has the best but there very well could be a line, there's a pretty good wait after you're seated and order and don't expect service with a smile or any ambiance. It's all about the pizza, plain and simple!
Which hospital do you recommend going to after you get shot?
It has been a long time since I have been back to Connecticut, so maybe some stuff has changed.
I dont know if a loaded pie is best for little kids. Same with seafood pies. These pies can be messy. More toppings can even slide off!
We really liked a small crab/broccoli w/white sauce at Modern's. Had to be small. Larger pies dont have as much flavor. Small slices will work as a "real" appetizer. My go to for my family nearly every Friday night during winter was one small crab/broccoli pie - eaten as an appetizer with the largest pepperoni and sausage pie and another large pie with veggie's and 1/2 sausage for one of my kids. We all helped on that one! I worked downtown and drove 40 minutes or more to our Southington home w/o ever getting into one of the pies. I felt that we ALL should enjoy the food as a family. My truck smelled glorious. Learned over the years that a toaster oven works best for re-heating that night if the drive was very long or the next day.
I also think that Moderns can be a little better than the other 2 with kids. They even have a parking lot which is always full, but I have got lucky the last few times.
I have been trying to get home to Connecticut from Houston for the last 4 years since my wife died - mostly for Modern's Apizza, several Hot Dog joints, a few seafood shacks - clam and lobster rolls.
One type of grinder is on my list (NOT New Haven's versions) Its a cappicola/provolone/roasted peppers, oil/vinegar with shop's spice mixture sprinkled on the veggies - shredded lettuce and tomatoes with a light smear of mayo all cooked together! I hope to have one of those daily!
Every year some health problem pops up for me. Heart attacks with stents following, leg stents, eyesight. This year, I broke my leg, tore up my knee and bruised my ankle bone in December and it has not healed. I spent some money late last year trying to save some teeth that prolly should have been pulled just for this year's trip. Yeah, about that, I had one eye tooth and 2 broken teeth pulled on Tuesday. I have to get up there this year in order to eat this stuff, even if I have to use a knife and fork!!!
If apizza is not in the cards for some reason, I recommend Consiglio's on Wooster Street for their lasagna. Best I ever had until my wife sweet talked them for their recipe. Cindy's was better!
Hopefully, I can fit in some visits with my kids, grand-kids and great-grand-kids that I have never seen!
Remember that the good Italian places are closed on Monday's!
Buon appetito!!!
Sorry that this post was meandering and a little off subject. I am presently full of Oxycodone and Muscle Relaxers for my leg, my mouth and my back. I should be going to the hospital tomorrow for the back. I am worried for several reason's that the cause of my back pain is not my normal pulled muscle type back pain. Maybe kidney stones or pancreas or?
Bulging or herniated disc? If so I feel your pain. Just remember there are treatments short of surgery that can be very effective.
You've had a rough go of things. Best wishes for getting through this.
but the Modern Italian Bomb is the best pizza on the planet and Modern is just more convenient than Wooster Street.
Bar, da legna, even Ernies on Whalley Ave is good, then you can get out to Hamden and go to Eli's or Sergios, or West Haven and go to Zuppardi's.
there's probably 15 to 20 pizza places in the New Haven metro area that are better than anywhere else on the planet.
I can eat an Itlalian Bomb from Modern right now.

My mouth is watering just looking at that picture. Truth is, I love Modern and the Italian bomb so much I haven't tried other places when back in New Haven in recent years. As others have said, you really can't miss with 15 or so different places
