the 40-man continues to rule until further notice. Hard to criticize Cash's approach. Waiting to add the young stars-in-waiting to the 40-man also defers the start of their MLB service time. I think we'll see Gleyber this year, for Headley, but I'm not sure we'll see Frazier et al. until next year.
Definitely don't think any of the AAA OFs come up this year Â
I don't think any big roster moves will happen until July but Austin can certainly platoon with Bird if he is healthy. I think Carter was just insurance - which ultimately we needed - and which hopefully we no longer need by July.
I don't think Austin has any trade value at this time, per se.
I'll bet they squeeze it in then. That's as close as they'll be to NY the rest of the year.
Think they already set it for September 25th
Yes, it is already on the schedule for 9/25 (on ESPN, at least). Of course, it won't need to be played because we'll have already clinched by then. :-)
BTW, on the weather - I was just outside, this weather sucks - they would not be playing in these conditions.
to Cashman on WFAN right now - this guy is by far the most interesting & most informative interview I have heard from a GM / Manager out there for any sport. Francesa asked him a question if he had any concern about the team becoming too right handed; with the history of the Yankees trying to take advantage of the RF short porch. Cashman's response was that in today's game with the shift so prevalent, the lefty power bat is considerably mitigated since their just isn't enough open space to hit into. The shift really isn't as effective against righties so they haven't felt the need to press specifically for a lefty bat to counter the righties they have coming in the pipeline. I had never thought of it that way, and just really occurred to me how little the shift has come in to play against this Yankee team now that the few lefty bats they have on the team are not big power guys. Whenever he is interviewed Cashman just has this way no other GM has at being able to paint you a picture of his thought process without actually giving up vital info. Most others play so close to the vest with canned answers you learn nothing from a 10 minute interview.
I didn't hear today's interview but I read one with Cashman where he said something similar. I agree it's very interesting, and there's no doubt that this year's team has almost completely negated the shift compared to recent teams with Teix, McCann, etc. hitting into it so often.
The shift doesn't work well against righties not only because of the stadium dimensions but because that 'tweener IF/OF guy can't make the throw to 1B in time from left field, whereas it's usually an easy play from right field.
that he didn't take the shift seriously enough when he signed McCann and Beltran, in addition to already having Teix. It was brutal watching those guys pound ground ball after ground ball into the teeth of that defense. Much better now, and also adds a little wrinkle into that Machado/Harper debate after next season!
Cashmans been remarkably honest in interviews over the past couple years - I think it's evidence he's finally wrested full control of baseball operations for the Steinbrenner family's bean counters.
Especially since, coming up on the one year mark, it looks like he nailed last seasons trades, he speaks with confidence he won't get called into the owners office and questioned about decisions after the fact
He's mentioned that he wanted to trade Robertson and Cano in previous years when the Yankees weren't contenders, and was overruled. Must be sweet vindication right now. Also, there's this sentiment that Hal will pressure him to deal prospects this year, but Hal's as fired up as anyone about the young guys (based on his interviews over the past six months or so) and is pretty keen on getting under that luxury tax threshold. I don't think any top prospects get dealt this year.
Something similar happened with Sanchez a few years back when he had a fairly disappointing season and was being branded as lazy.
that is true - people forget that about Sanchez.
I've never seen Mateo play but he's supposed to be really fast, right? That wouldn't hurt. Plus CF in the long term remains somewhat of a question mark, since we seem to have more corner OF types.
Had an incredible base stealing year two seasons ago(82 for 99), a bad one last season (36 for 51), and great again so far this year (17 for 19).
Speed like that never takes a day off, as they say. It's great to see him hitting much better, but he needs to be more selective at the plate. In his first seasons in rookie ball and single A, he posted very good OBPs, but last year it was only .306 and this year .307.

I am clairvoyant!
A September game isn't the worst thoUgh with the 40 man opened up
I think he realizes he may get a week in before Bird is back. Carter isn't going to get in the way of his PT.

they have to fly to NY for just 1 game now in September??
Think they already set it for September 25th

SS Jorge Mateo: 3-3, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 3B, 1 BB — his season batting line went from .213/.265/.303 to .270/.300/.458 during this 14-game hot streak
Nice to see him heating up big time recently.
