NFT: Forward Labs says its solar roof costs 33% less than Tesla’s

Ira : 5/26/2017 11:38 am
I'm not a home owner and don't know much about the relative cost, savings and payback period of these things. But I thought that this bit of news might be interesting for those who are more knowledgable and might be interested in a new roof, so I linked the article below. I'll also add this quote -
Quote:
“Our goal in bringing our solar roof to market was threefold,” said Zach Taylor, CEO and Product Architect of Forward Labs. “We aimed to develop an integrated solar roof system that looks great, optimizes energy output, and accelerates the return on investment. Other solar roofs simply do not offer the same return that homeowners expect for their money.”

Not sure about the solar shingles but I am very happy with my

solar power system. Maybe not for everyones situation but my break even is about 6 years, which I'm almost at, and then after that it will pay me about $2k selling SRECs and save me about another $1k in electrical bills per year.
I guess a lot of it is finding a contractor that you can trust

On shingles or panels? Our customers see a return in less than six years, on average. Commercial customers in NJ see there money back in less than 3.5. We have grown 30% every year since we started in 2010.

Solar isn't fringe technology. It is main stream.
The price comparison
KeoweeFan : 5/26/2017 1:13 pm : link
is for the panels only.
To make it feasible for the average home owner, you would need storage.
In the news release that I saw a month ago, Tesla said they would ALSO include a quote for their Powerwall.

Nobody said it was a fringe technology, just that it's sold by a bunch of shady companies who make it impossible to figure out the TCO and ROI of the system, either with or without tax incentives. And in most cases, that's because it's just not feasible from a cost perspective, but if they told you that outright you wouldn't buy it from them.
I haven't even seen the returns

between the tax credit I received and the income from my panels (we were early installers and received a 50% grant) our panels, which produce 4Kw, paid for themselves in 6 1/2 years and are producing about $2,124/year in defrayed electrical bills after being paid off for 7 plus years now.

We have enough space to produce another 25Kw on our barn and are seriously considering how we do that now.
