NFT: Time for a new gas grill, BBI. Need some recommendations

Danny Kanell : 5/26/2017 5:06 pm
I know the general consensus is Weber on here. I've never owned one. I'm thinking about the Weber E-310 which is $500. That's pretty much my cap on what I'm gonna spend. Ace has free installation and delivery on it. This is where I'm leaning but I see the Nexgrills on sale at Home Depot, 5 burners with huge cooking spaces for like $200 and the online reviews are pretty good. I've had a Brinkman from HD for 4 years and it's completely on its last legs. I like the idea of Webers lasting forever. So anyone have a Nexgrill? Thoughts? Any and all recommendations are appreciated. I generally grill year round. 2-3 times a week at least in the summer and 1-2 times a week when it's cold.

Thanks!

don't waste your time even discussing anything else.

I have a Genesis that was ransacked by a bear. A fucking bear.

Still working.
Have you considered going charcoal?
steve in ky : 5/26/2017 5:25 pm : link
Years ago I went back to charcoal and I really enjoy it.
How many times has this been asked?

One word: WEBER.
Your welcome.
This is all you need to know...

Then, if you want to talk smokers I will put mine up against any others.
The best grills - ( New Window )
Just got my first weber
oghwga : 5/26/2017 5:39 pm : link
After years of resisting. Was going to get a lynx but I'm an empty nester now so nothing fancy requires. Had a nexgrill with a 10 year warranty and they were great about sending me free parts but the weber blows it away. I'm old now and may be soon with the angels but my one regret in life was waiting so long to buy the weber. Just do it. I also have a kamado which I highly recommend.
I've had a Weber
Someguy1978 : 5/26/2017 5:49 pm : link
E310 for over three years and it's still going strong. By far the best gas grill I've ever owned. I just picked up an 18.5" Weber kettle grill for dirt cheap that I absolutely love using as well. While the other grill might be cheaper, I would be willing to bet it won't last nearly as long as the Weber.

That's universally agreed on here is Weber's rock. My Genesis is 6 years old and still going strong and I'm a year round griller.

If you swing a Weber, go for it and don't look back. My only advice would be to buy from a certified dealer. Not sure if it's true, but the grills sold at big box stores have inferior parts to keep prices down. I asked the salesman at my dealer and he couldn't give details on what exactly was inferior. Also go with steel grates, not cast iron.
Just bought a Weber Genesis E310.

First Weber lasted 20 years. Love the Weber. Can't go wrong.
We bought a Char-Broil Advantage

gas grill two years ago. Don't make the same mistake. It takes forever to warm up and indirect grilling is terrible.

I have a 330. It is amazing. I had a Charbroil before. An absolute piece of junk.

With many items and not just grills that is often the case with some box box stores, but not always. The thing to look for is the model name/numbers. If they are the exact same as listed from the company's standard national lineup then the specs are going to be the same, if they are altered slightly (just for that store) you can count on something having been substituted.
Joining the chorus...

no issues, but I am about to order the replacement burners, grills and flavorizer bars. That's a personal choice though, I'm sure a good cleaning would suffice.
Convenient timing for this thread

As I'm probably picking up one this weekend.

Any opinions on the models?

Pricing doesn't really change for these right? Pretty much will pay the same at any point during the year?

Never Weber, i had their top of the line platinum, many of the underneath supporting elements to the stainless steel is cheaper steel, and it all turned to dust in 7 years, and Weber would no honor any warranty....i found the solution.....go with the all aluminum MHP grill, they have many options, and after ten years it has been bulletproof to the rust and degradation, and they offer a lifetime guarantee.....happy cooking trails!

Yeah, I don't know if I buy this. I own one about a half mile from NY Harbor, and the other about 500 feet from a beach. In both locations, anything left outside rusts practically overnight.

My first Genesis lasted 15 years (and was disposed of mostly due to aesthetics), the Summit that replaced it and the Genesis that are at my seasonal home are both a couple of years old and not a single sign of rust.
Here's probably the only non Weber suggestion you'll get
BillT : 5/26/2017 6:42 pm : link
Webers are great and expensive. To get a good size 4 burner grill like I need it's like 1500. I got a very good Char Broil Commercial Model at Loews for less than a third of that. Very good customer support. Spare parts available. Very nice cast iron grills. Will it last a lifetime. Probably not but it's a pretty nice grill.
For a value option, Home Depot has a Nexgrill 4 burner grill
jcn56 : 5/26/2017 6:47 pm : link
mostly stainless construction, for $199 this weekend. It's not going to give you the same service and reliability as the Weber, but it'll hold up longer than your cheapo grill at a very good price.

My value option is the Member's Mark from Sam's. Those grills are actually high quality and the warranty is awesome.
I have a weber genesis.

Cost double of what you are talking. Best grill I ever have had.

Understand I have a regular smoker. Pellet smoker, a 4 gallon deep fryer, and several turkey fryers which the fans at the 08' tailgate in Tampa can attest I know how to use.

Weber is the way to go.
Another possible option would be
Someguy1978 : 5/26/2017 8:13 pm : link
to check your local Craigslist ads and see if anybody is selling a used one or giving one away for free. My brother picked up a used one Weber for free a few years ago. The only thing it needed was an igniter which the owners had but never installed. The grill was in immaculate condition. My brother offered them cash but they refused. They told him to pay it forward. He still has the grill and it's still in excellent shape.

I also have a Weber gas grill
B in ALB : 5/26/2017 8:16 pm : link
Had it for 10 years and it STILL heats to over 700 degrees in just over a few minutes. Still cooks like new. I've only had to replace the grates and flavor bars once in 10 years. And that was more by choice than necessity.

I see a few people mentioned charcoal - great suggestion. Depending on your climate, charcoal isn't always ideal and sometimes in the winter, you just want to grill something quick when it's 0 degrees outside.

I bought an 18" Weber kettle for $99 about four years ago. Works like new as well. If I'm cooking a really good steak or great cut of meat, it's wood lump in the kettle no doubt.

Spend the extra hundred or two on the Weber gas grill for its longevity, customer service, reliability, durability, and piece of mind.

FWI You can also roll them up damp in aluminum foil and a few stabs for venting.
Yeah no shit river but

Wood chips are the last thing he needs to season his grill.

Doesn't matter at this point though. Someone else is putting it together.

I personally wouldn't touch a Weber. Yep in the minority here but I've dueled them head to head and for all around cooking experience they are tops. Ours is 8 yrs old too. Quick high heat great for steak and sausages in particular, never flare up. Weber is built strong and if I left mine outside or needed to ride it down a mountain it would be the choice.

He ended up giving a cash donation and volunteering at a local food bank a few weeks after he got the grill. I was with him when he went to pick it up. They were empty nesters and downsizing and they couldn't have been any nicer. We both gave them our numbers if they ever needed anything.

My vote for a gas grill - Weber.
Let's talk about that smoker now EricJ....
Have weber spirit 210
AnnapolisMike : 5/27/2017 3:56 am : link
Two burners. Gas lasts forever. Plenty of space for my family of 4 plus guests. No problem getting to 550+ degrees. Bigger is just a waste unless you are party central.
I have had my Weber Spirit for 11 years....
Britt in VA : 5/27/2017 7:44 am : link
It still lights up on the first click.

Only maintenance I ever had to do was replace the grates and flavor bars because I was using it so much.

I picked up this exact grill last night. Construction is sturdy although the stainless steel is on the thin side. Very nice ceramic side sear burner and a rotisserie. Gonna be putting it to the test today but so far pretty impressed with the construction of it.

Was looking for a $150 cheapo year or two throwaway grill but this looks like it will last a lot longer and for just a little more than I had planned to spend
I used to get the char-broil
pjcas18 : 5/27/2017 9:21 am : link
grills because that's what I could afford when I was young. They were $199 or so for a three-burner grill.

year 1 is great and the people who like char-broil or are anti-Weber would say your food won't taste different if it comes off a char-broil or a Weber. and they're right (for year 1).

but then winter hits. And I would always cover my grills, and when the next spring comes around and go to use the grill almost every time (I think actually every time) the igniter no longer worked.

I'd have to light the grills with the match/lighter method which is dicey. Sometimes I'd feel like my eyebrows were singed, sometimes they actually were singed.

then the grills would develop hot spots very quickly and I'd need to watch anything on the grill like a hawk and move the food around the grill so all the food would be done to the same level around the same time.

then by year two the flavor bars and even the grill base would begin to corrode (someone mentioned thin steel, these were probably thinner), the flavor bars didn't even line up with the flame so they were more aesthetic than actually functional. The grill structure was pretty flimsy too and if it made it through two winters it was a shock.

Anyway, this was still worth it to me b/c $199 is $199, but once I got to my mid-20's and had some more disposable income I was able to make better decisions like Weber over any grill.

Weber grill is over 5 years old, still starts with one or two pushes of the igniter, all parts are in tact, no hot spots, and the grill structure is solid as could be.

And I use a grill often, so maybe that's the other thing, if you rarely use a grill it probably doesn't matter so much.

And over the years through friends and others I've experienced Sunbeam (worse than Char-broil) Kenmore (worse than char-broil), Vermont Castings (slightly better than CHar-Broil), Jenn-Air (given to me when a friend moved) - awful maybe the worst - but the sturdiest grill I'd ever seen - that thing was like a tank - awful grill, looked good though.

Had weber
