Some teams talk Super Bowl-or-Bust and it is little more than lip service. The Giants mean it, and they didn’t need to see Odell Beckham Jr. on the field at OTAs with Brandon Marshall, Sterling Shepard and No. 1 pick tight end Evan Engram either. The season can’t come soon enough for them. “I think we all realize the amount of talent we have on this team. There’s no excuse for us not to go all the way,” second-year free safety Andrew Adams told The Post. “This team’s very hungry, and very eager to kick off the season.” |
The NFL can be had.... Green Bay, Atlanta, Seattle...all can beaten.
The AFC is tougher and I suspect the NFC representative will be the Underdog....but if anyone has proven that really does not matter is the Giants.
High expectations.....that injuries and the OL are the only reason it derails.
If Thompson can stay on the field.....if Goodson can contribute this season....if DRC can stay healthy......and if Tomlinson can increase his playing time as the season progresses, the defense can be even better than last year....
As for the offense, Reese maintained the status quo last season, mainly because he spent all the CAP on defense.....he thought the OL would get better, playing together as a unit, after a full season....they didn't.....he still counted on not one, not two, but three undrafted TE's to solve that problem....it didn't.....he counted on a RB who could dance, but couldn't carry the ball...and most importantly, he put all his eggs in one basket as far as Cruz was concerned, because he did not have a backup plan when Cruz failed...
So what did that all mean? Eli had few options.....he lost Vereen early in the season.....he had no running game to take the pressure off him......We kept Jennings one year too long....his only weapon was OBj.....SS was a good receiver and he had his moments......but he also had some big drops....hopefully, he shows improvement in year 2.....the TE's couldn't block, and came up short in big situations.....
This year Reese focused on the offense more.....he replaced Cruz with Marshall.....with Marshall, SS, and OBj, we have a solid trio, as long as Marshall doesn't age overnight....we have a lot of candidates for the fourth spot, but there is nothing really there that stands out.....
Hopefully, the running game gets a boost with better blocking from the TE position, and the addition of a possible FB....Perkins will have to carry the load, but he is not built to do that.....Gallman is a rookie, and he will have to pick up the system real fast, because he will be Perkins backup.....the rest of the RB are a huge dropoff....in fact,. I would not be surprised if someone is added to the roster, as a late cut.....
The OL is basically the same....many on BBI wanted to sell the farm, to trade for aging starters for the line.....this was not a good year, in FAcy or the draft for OLmen....there is no doubt, Reese is counting on Flowers to finally flower this season, or he will be the second first rounder to not pan out on his watch....this is not a strong OL, but it can be more than adequate....too many times the running plays were blown up before even getting started.....TE's that can block and a new FB should help dramatically....
But the main thing is, Eli now has options.....it's not just the OBj show now.....if the offense can avoid injuries too, this offense is going to put points on the board and make life a little easier for the defense.....
McAdoo has to show that he can be more creative with the weapons this offense has.....he was limited last season....there is no excuse for what we saw from last season....
This team, is not getting the respect from the media....and that's just the way we like it.....I think the Giants are going to surprise a lot of people
Perkins is basically the same size as LeSean McCoy, Devonte Freeman, or Jamal Charles.
I still think this team needs a veteran runner.... pissed that the Eagles got Blount....

Same size as Tiki Barber and Brian Westbrook, too. I'm not worried about his ability to carry the load, and it doesn't look like the Giants are, either.
I also don't think the Giants are worried about "overusing" Shane Vereen, who's still only 28, and should be a valuable contributor on 3rd downs if need be.
As for the rookie, Gallman, his growth won't be stunted by missing any early time like Perkins' was last year, but I figure the Giants will still bring him along slowly unless he's pressed into service due to injury - God forbid.
Marshall replacing Cruz, Engram/Ellison replacing Tye/Donnell, Perkins replacing Jennings, Vereen healthy, solid special teams, and a top 5 defense.
This team is loaded and 1 of the most talented rosters in the league. Stay healthy and this team can beat anyone.
Now - the talk is Super Bowl. Has the "feel" to the 2008 team (but with a dominant D instead of a dominant OL).
I can't wait to watch this new offense light up Dallas' defense
The thing that worries me about this is the recent season when Reese posted on the board the numbers of days until the Super Bowl, and the team tanked.
Barring injuries (which is a worry for every team), this team should be a contender, but let's hope they take it one game at a time instead of already looking forward to the Super Bowl.

Just call it a hunch. I think Engram and Tomlinson will be very good once they get a few games under their belt.
I absolutely think this team is a contender, but if they win it all it will be in underdog Eli style, not home field advantage style.
Best QB in team history and two time sb mvp
Best receiving corp in team history and maybe for any team at any time.
Top five front four..with three all pro types and a highly touted rookie
Very good and underrated backers
The best three cB's in football
Best safety in the game and Thompson
Overall the best secondary in football
Superb and deep group at TE.
All that is -barring injuries etc - I think indisputable and can hardly be called a "reach".
But we ARE entitled to reasonable reaches at this time of the year and here's mine... The OLine can be excellent.
Smith (from Dallas) and Jonathon ogden (two of the best) started their careers as guards. I even believe Orlando Pace might have started at guard. We took a much younger player (20 years old or about the age of a college sophomore) and threw him right into the difficult OLT position. Should we be condemning Flowers because he struggled? It's not a given, but isn't there a strong possibility that he'll blossom (ugh Flowers bloom they don't blosson) in his third year? Any reason that the very hard working Hart can't reach adequate?
I think both are very good possibilities and, in fact, Pugh and his health are the Achilles heels.
Flowers, Pugh, Richenberg, Fluker and Hart. could be damn good and huge..decent reserves for once in Jerry, Jones, Gettis (a surprise, wait and see) and one of the three or so candidates for tackle.
Ellison alone makes this bunch better. Much better.
So that's my reach...that maybe moves this to a great great team, but - reach or no reach - this is still a superbowl roster.
We don't know that much about Darian Thompson, even if he stays healthy.
As for the OL, I think their ceiling is most likely "ok".
Also, calling this WR corps the best of all time is jumping the gun a bit. Let's see how Marshall settles in, how Sheppard develops in year 2, and if some depth emerges.

Good post, however best 3 cb's in football, no way. The O-line continues to be a huge question mark, with potential to be decent, better than that, doubtful. But I like your optimism and hope that it pans out.
