At least two scouting reports I read on Jones suggested he may be better at Offensive Tackle. There have been a few successful OT position switches at the NFL level in recent years.
According to Pro Football Weekly's Scouting Report:
"Jones may not have a defensive mentality and might be better off as an offensive tackle. Good athlete with change of direction and balance. Has the height, length, strength and athleticism to be very good on offense."
And now the Giants agree.
Combine/Pro Day* Measurements:
Height: 6'6"
Weight: 316 lbs.
Arm Length: 35.5"
Hand Size: 10.5"
40: 5.33
Short Shuttle: 4.77*
The dude sure looks like he's built like an O-Tackle. Should be interesting to monitor him in camp.
I think that will be Dunker. Jones really needs as much time as possible learning a new position so he will likely be on the practice squad assuming he puts in the work.
Jones was probably a long shot at DT because of questions about "attitude" which one may translate as "not aggressive" enough. He sounds like he likes the opportunity and feels comfortable there.
If this works out and he gets to the practice squad, it will be too bad that he didn't get 4 years in college at OT.
You're right but didn't Seattle transition two defensive linemen to guards recently?
I disagree. You can't practice when on IR which would seemingly make it even more difficult to successfully switch positions.
Agreed.
Mike Solari must have seen something he likes, enough to see if there could be something there.
Looking at his Bio he was ranked as the #11 OT national in high school by 247sports, so it isn't completely new for him.
You have to remember Notre Dame's OL has been stacked recently with Stanley, McGlinchey, Nelson and Cole.
At this early stage it is largely just flirting with the idea. We will see if it ends up being a regular thing.
It is interesting that we did bring in another DT. Jones will have a chance regardless, depth spots at DT or OL are up for grabs.

a prime candidate for a late preseason "injury" and to be stashed on the IR for a year.
If he shows enough promise, there'll be room for him on the practice squad. And there's no risk of him being scooped up off the practice squad by another team.
Milton, I like you, but why does your opinion always come across like fact? How do you know there's no risk? Not saying that I disagree, but then again, the Giants didn't draft Cam Robinson, either.

But this is one of those times where I feel pretty confident. It's hard for me to imagine that a team would pluck off another team's practice squad an undrafted college DL who is making the transition to OL and place him on their team's 53 man squad. He'd have to look pretty damn impressive in the preseason for that to happen.
p.s.--As for Cam Robinson, the jury came in and I was wru-u-u-ong. And it's not just that the Giants didn't select him. There were teams even more desperate along the OL than Big Blue (i.e., Seattle) who also passed on him. I hope it wasn't simply because of the drug/gun bust and only that, because I truly believe that was a non-issue. Of course I didn't get to be in the interview room when he was answering questions about it. Not surprising that Tom Coughlin traded up for him (one spot I think) in round two, he's got the kind of measurables Coughlin falls in love with.
Classic guard, not very useful as a DT in terms of playing towards the football.
He's playing Offensive Tackle so yes, they agree. Not difficult.

He played limited reps at OT in OTAs, and as usual, you're full of crap.
