I was out with some buddies last night and, definitely a few too many brews deep, this topic came up regarding the NFL Draft. For me, number one was Matt Ryan. I thought he was going to be a total bust having seen him multiple times in college. Also, I've been totally wrong about Joey Bosa thus far. He was a beast last season.
On the flip side, I thought Brady Quinn was going to be a star. ND bias no doubt. I watch a ton of SEC games and would have bet anything Trent Richardson was going to a beast in the NFL for years.
Who were you wrong about?
Coby Fleener - Actually, looking at his stats, he's been decent, but I thought he would be an all-pro playing with Luck.
OO - watched him at UCLA, figured he would be much better than what little he has shown.
Matt Flynn - I thought he would have been a starter somewhere at some point in his career.
Jamarcus Russell - Yes, I admit it, I thought he would be good, or at least not as bad as he was.
Drew Olsen - watched him at UCLA win a bunch of games all by himself. Figured he would at least catch on as a backup with a chance to play some if there were injuries. Surprised that he never caught on as a project/backup.
I hate the Ravens to this day for that draft. And teams for passing on Lawrence Phillips. Ogden was ours for the taking, damn it. Much like I hate the Timberwolves for taking two freaking PGs and forcing the Warriors to take Steph Curry, one pick before the Knicks. Those two drafts will forever eat at my soul.
I thought he was a perfect fit for our defense, and would develop into a Charles Haley style beast coming off the edge.
Yeah, no. A total of 1.5 sacks in 3 years in Blue...
Nuff said.
2. Ramses Barden.... I really thought he was going to be a beast and the best receiver we had seen on the team.
Now i feel stupid
Jarvis Landry - Saw him as a productive try hard college guy who's physical limitations would cause him to wash out quickly in the NFL. I did not expect an athletic Pro Bowl caliber receiver who doubles as an elite return man.
On the Giants:
Justin Pugh - Was even more steamed when the Giants picked Pugh than when they picked Flowers. At least with Flowers I thought there was some upside to work with compared to a short armed athletically limited guy like Pugh. Now he's the anchor of the line at Guard, one of the team leaders, can play Tackle in a pinch, and looks anything but a reach especially compared to all the other guys picked over him.
Odell Beckham Jr. - Not really a player I thought would be a bust. I knew he was good but thought why draft a good undersized slot receiver when two studs who I saw as future All Pros, Zach Martin and Aaron Donald were there for the taking at positions that could create an immediate impact. It seemed redundant to double down on a smallish slot receiver when we already had Cruz filling that role. Was way off on our resident all world receiver with the goofy fro hawk.
And then he kind of sucked...
Partly was "hope" because he's a local kid to me, partly because the Giants really needed a stud RB..but mostly because of his ridiculous numbers in College.
I, self admittedly, do not watch much college football at all. But the numbers just really popped out to me.
oh well!!
I still think he's an injury-prone jackass.
But Jesus, can that kid play. Best receiver I ever saw.
Since then, I've made a jackass out of myself on draft day many, many times.
If it were up to me, we'd have gotten Sean Taylor instead of Eli.
Be very, very grateful I'm not GM.
I thought Hamonic was your whipping boy.
Yeah, it's impossible to say, but I feel like he would have validated your position on him if he didn't tear his knee apart before his first regular season started. That sucked.

would be a TV star.
Whoops.
To this day I wonder what goes through the mind of Tiki Barber every time he sees his nemesis Strahan with literally EVERYTHING he ever wanted - the ring, the TV career, the Hall of Fame spot, the respect ...
To be fair, Tiki peaked to early with his TV Career. Started off doing sports on the Today show, and everything went downhill from there.

I guess breaking some NFL records isn't enough for you...

Tiki should have never left Fox, at least not as early as he did.

I thought he was going to prove the doubters wrong who said he didn't deserve to be the 5thoverall pick

I was at that NBA draft and it was one of the more depressing fan experiences of my life. I was hoping against hope the Warriors would pass on Steph.
Anthony Davis and
Reggie Nelson...

William Joseph: I figured pretty much anyone on that U of Miami program were locks to be quality players. Joseph turned out to be a huge disappointment.
Tim Carter: Blazing speed, chiseled physique. This guy had everything you could ask for in WR. He was also cousins with Doc Gooden and Gary Sheffield, so I figured with good genetics he had a shot. Unfortunately, it never quite panned out.
Brian Alford: One of my best friends is a huge Purdue fan, so he'd constantly be in my ear about how awesome he was. He is another one of those track stars that weren't really football players.
Tyrone Wheatley: I don't think I was ever more excited for a pick than Wheatley.
Alford went to Penn State.
You are thinking of Jay Alford, David said Brian Alford, who attended Purdue.
Omg, yes. My bad David. I had totally forgotten about that receiver.

I wanted Sean Taylor too and look at the player he turned out to be, who knew some ass hole would murder him...
